    Auf die sich multipolar entwickelnde Machtverteilung reagieren die Theorieschulen der Internationalen Beziehungen (IB) in den letzten Jahrzehnten mit einer immer stärkeren Ausdifferenzierung. Über diesem Prozess schwebt stets die Kritik am Fehlen einer gemeinhin akzeptierten Systematik. Ferner bestehen Unklarheiten hinsichtlich der Anwendungsmöglichkeiten und Erklärungsleistungen der theoretischen Denkansätze. Vor diesem Hintergrund diskutiert die KFIBS-Forschungsgruppe "IB-Theorien und Außenpolitikforschung" aktuelle Trends und Debatten in den IB, bedient sich dabei ausgewählter Theorieansätze und wendet diese auf empirische Fallstudien an, um deren Leistungsfähigkeit zu testen. Mit Beiträgen von Sebastian M. Niemetz, Jann Preisendörfer, Ludwig Schulze, Paul Emtsev, Pauline Mathieu, Nicolas Verbeek, Eliza Friederichs und Sascha Arnautović. Schools of thought in International Relations (IR) are increasingly differentiating to match with the multipolar power distribution. Yet, the newly implemented strands are facing criticism for the lack of a generally accepted systematic framework. Furthermore, there are ambiguities with regard to the possible applications and explanations for the theoretical approaches. Against this background, the KFIBS research group "International Relations Theories and Foreign Policy Research" discusses current trends and debates in IR, using selected theoretical approaches and applying them to empirical case studies to evaluate their performance. With contributions by Sebastian M. Niemetz, Jann Preisendörfer, Ludwig Schulze, Paul Emtsev, Pauline Mathieu, Nicolas Verbeek, Eliza Friederichs and Sascha Arnautović.

    A major theoretical statement by a distinguished political scholar explains why a policy of liberal hegemony is doomed to fail In this major statement, the renowned international-relations scholar John Mearsheimer argues that liberal hegemony, the foreign policy pursued by the United States since the Cold War ended, is doomed to fail. It makes far more sense, he maintains, for Washington to adopt a more restrained foreign policy based on a sound understanding of how nationalism and realism constrain great powers abroad.   It is widely believed in the West that the United States should spread liberal democracy across the world, foster an open international economy, and build institutions. This policy of remaking the world in America's image is supposed to protect human rights, promote peace, and make the world safe for democracy. But this is not what has happened. Instead, the United States has ended up as a highly militarized state fighting wars that undermine peace, harm human rights, and threaten liberal values at home. Mearsheimer tells us why this has happened.

    The agent-structure problem is a much discussed issue in the field of international relations. In his comprehensive 2006 analysis of this problem, Colin Wight deconstructs the accounts of structure and agency embedded within differing IR theories and, on the basis of this analysis, explores the implications of ontology - the metaphysical study of existence and reality. Wight argues that there are many gaps in IR theory that can only be understood by focusing on the ontological differences that construct the theoretical landscape.     Folgenreiche politische Entscheidungen werden in der Medienöffentlichkeit allzu oft isoliert betrachtet und mithin auch extrem klischeehaft repräsentiert. Die Politikwissenschaft bzw. die Wissenschaft der Internationalen Beziehungen wäre in diesem Zusammenhang aufgerufen, sachliche und grundlagentheoretisch aufbereitete Analysen der (internationalen) Politik in den öffentlichen Diskurs einzuspeisen. Stattdessen verlegt sich der amerikanisierte Mainstream auf die Legitimierung der politischen Praxis, die Konstruktion weltanschaulich verkürzter Narrative und/oder scholastische Diskussionen über randständige Details. Das vorliegende Buch unternimmt den Versuch, das Profil einer unabhängigen wissenschaftlichen Perspektive gegenüber der (internationalen) Politik zu schärfen, aus der es interessierten Beobachter/innen möglich wird, angemessene Vorstellungen von den aktuellen realweltlichen Geschehnissen zu entwickeln. Zu diesem Zweck werden im ersten Teil des Buches Grundprinzipien kritischen Denkens rekonstruiert, die im zweiten Teil des Buches mit Blick auf genuin kritische Deutungsmöglichkeiten realpolitischer Geschehnisse veranschaulicht werden The increasing Americanization of political science and the discipline of international relations has rendered the profile of an independent scholarly perspective vis-à-vis (international) politics almost unrecognizable. Edkins argues that, contrary to the opinions of their detractors, the poststructuralists are concerned with the big questions of international politics: it is precisely their work that analyzes the political and explains the processes of depoliticization and technologization. Paying particular attention to notions of the subject and subjectivity in relation to the political, and to the relationship between ideology and social reality, Edkins explores, in short, why Foucault and others matter for international relations

    In Emanuel Adler's distinctive constructivist approach to international relations theory, international practices evolve in tandem with collective knowledge of the material and social worlds. This book - comprising a fresh selection of his journal publications, a substantial new introduction, three previously unpublished articles - points IR constructivism in a novel direction, characterized as 'communitarian'. Adler's synthesis does not herald the end of the nation-state; nor does it suggest that agency is unimportant in international life. Rather, it argues that what mediates between individual and state agency and social structures are communities of practice, which are the wellspring and repositories of collective meanings and social practices. The concept of communities of practice casts new light on epistemic communities and security communities, helping to explain why certain ideas congeal into human practices and others do not, and which social mechanisms can facilitate the emergence of normatively better communities.     A major theoretical statement by a distinguished political scholar explains why a policy of liberal hegemony is doomed to fail. In this major statement, the renowned international-relations scholar John Mearsheimer argues that liberal hegemony, the foreign policy pursued by the United States since the Cold War ended, is doomed to fail. It makes far more sense, he maintains, for Washington to adopt a more restrained foreign policy based on a sound understanding of how nationalism and realism constrain great powers abroad. It is widely believed in the West that the United States should spread liberal democracy across the world, foster an open international economy, and build institutions. This policy of remaking the world in America’s image is supposed to protect human rights, promote peace, and make the world safe for democracy. But this is not what has happened. Instead, the United States has ended up as a highly militarized state fighting wars that undermine peace, harm human rights, and threaten liberal values at home. Mearsheimer tells us why this has happened.

    Folgenreiche politische Entscheidungen werden in der Medienöffentlichkeit allzu oft isoliert betrachtet und mithin auch extrem klischeehaft repräsentiert. Die Politikwissenschaft bzw. die Wissenschaft der Internationalen Beziehungen wäre in diesem Zusammenhang aufgerufen, sachliche und grundlagentheoretisch aufbereitete Analysen der (internationalen) Politik in den öffentlichen Diskurs einzuspeisen. Stattdessen verlegt sich der amerikanisierte Mainstream auf die Legitimierung der politischen Praxis, die Konstruktion weltanschaulich verkürzter Narrative und/oder scholastische Diskussionen über randständige Details. Das vorliegende Buch unternimmt den Versuch, das Profil einer unabhängigen wissenschaftlichen Perspektive gegenüber der (internationalen) Politik zu schärfen, aus der es interessierten Beobachter/innen möglich wird, angemessene Vorstellungen von den aktuellen realweltlichen Geschehnissen zu entwickeln. The volume tracks operations across four circuits of power: global security regimes, states and state violence; the humanitarian-development nexus; and mass media. Through close ethnographic studies and analysis of discourses, the essays explore the ways gender-based violence against women may be affirming, enabling, or sustaining rationales and systems of power and civilizational hierarches that are harmful for many. Through case studies on Palestine, Bangladesh, Iran, India, Pakistan, Israel, and Turkey, as well as U.S. foreign policy and the international legal institutions from the International Criminal Court to the UN Security Council, Cunning of Gender Violence traces the silences and omissions of the governmentalized categories of gender-based violence against women while analyzing its real-world impacts"--

War and Change in World Politics introduces the reader to an important new theory of international political change. Arguing that the fundamental nature of international relations has not changed over the millennia, Professor Gilpin uses history, sociology, and economic theory to identify the forces causing change in the world order. The discussion focuses on the differential growth of power in the international system and the result of this unevenness. A shift in the balance of power - economic or military - weakens the foundations of the existing system, because those gaining power see the increasing benefits and the decreasing cost of changing the system. The result, maintains Gilpin, is that actors seek to alter the system through territorial, political, or economic expansion until the marginal costs of continuing change are greater than the marginal benefits. When states develop the power to change the system according to their interests they will strive to do so- either by increasing economic efficiency and maximizing mutual gain, or by redistributing wealth and power in their own favour
