    A characteristic shared by the Roman and Byzantine illustrated calendars is that they represent the 12 months of the year, referable to an iconographic repertoire which is divided into three themes: the astrological-astronomical, the festive-ritual and the rural-seasonal. With regard to the first type, the months are depicted through images of the signs of the zodiac, often associated with images of the guardian deities of the months; the second category includes depictions of the months that refer to some important religious festivals; finally, the third theme includes images of the months that allude to the most important work activities performed in the countryside

    In this volume, Karin Krause examines conceptions of divine inspiration and authenticity in the religious literature and visual arts of Byzantium. During antiquity and the medieval era, "inspiration" encompassed a range of ideas regarding the divine contribution to the creation of holy texts, icons, and other material objects by human beings. Krause traces the origins of the notion of divine inspiration in the Jewish and polytheistic cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern worlds and their reception in Byzantine religious culture. Exploring how conceptions of authenticity are employed in Eastern Orthodox Christianity to claim religious authority, she analyzes texts in a range of genres, as well as images in different media, including manuscript illumination, icons, and mosaics. Her interdisciplinary study demonstrates the pivotal role that claims to the divine inspiration of religious literature and art played in the construction of Byzantine cultural identity

    Cet ouvrage posthume - unique en son genre - est le fruit d'une vaste enquête menée sur les représentations des moines et ermites, principalement dans la peinture monumentale, dans les régions de l'Empire byzantin et de sa périphérie, de l'époque paléochrétienne à celle des Paléologues. Svetlana Tomeković a non seulement visité la plupart des monuments, afin d'analyser les images in situ et de réunir la documentation photographique, mais elle a aussi exploité systematiquement les sources hagiographiques. L'iconographie des saints ermites et moines (portrait, vêtements, attitudes, textes peints sur leur phylactère, etc.) est étudiée de façon diachronique ; leurs groupements, leurs emplacements dans les églises et, le cas échéant, la représentation des épisodes de leur vie sont attentivement examinés. Ces approches croisées dessinent les temps forts de l'iconographie monastique, notamment aux xie et xiie siècles, et éclairent de façon originale un aspect essentiel de la piété et de la spiritualité byzantines. Des fiches hagiographiques et topographiques complètent le texte, outils de repérage qui seront précieux pour les recherches à venir. De nombreuses photographies en couleurs de belle qualité, la plupart inédites et réalisées par l'auteur, et des dessins étayent et enrichissent le texte.
