"Shakespeare in London offers a lively and engaging new reading of some of Shakespeare's major work, informed by close attention to the language of his drama. The focus of the book is on Shakespeare's London, how it influenced his drama and how he represents it on stage. Taking readers on an imaginative journey through the city, the book moves both chronologically, from beginning to end of Shakespeare's dramatic career, and also geographically, traversing London from west to east. Each chapter focuses on one play and one key location, drawing out the thematic connections between that place and the drama it underwrites. Plays discussed in detail include Hamlet, Measure for Measure, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, King Lear and Romeo and Juliet. Close textual readings accompany the wealth of contextual material, providing a fresh and exciting way into Shakespeare's work."--

"Over the last 20 years, the concept of 'economic' activity has come to seem inseparable from psychological, semiotic and ideological experiences. In fact, the notion of the 'economy' as a discrete area of life seems increasingly implausible. This returns us to the situation of Shakespeare's England, where the financial had yet to be differentiated from other forms of representation. This book shows how concepts and concerns that were until recently considered purely economic affected the entire range of sixteenth and seventeenth century life. Using the work of such critics as Jean-Christophe Agnew, Douglas Bruster, Hugh Grady and many others, Shakespeare and Economic Theory traces economic literary criticism to its cultural and historical roots, and discusses its main practitioners. Providing new readings of Timon of Athens, King Lear, The Winter's Tale, The Merchant of Venice, Measure for Measure, the Sonnets, Julius Caesar, Macbeth and The Tempest, David Hawkes shows how it can reveal previously unappreciated qualities of Shakespeare's work."--Bloomsbury Publishing pt. I. Economics in History and Criticism -- pt. II. Economics in Shakespeare.

Whether the apocalyptic storm of King Lear or the fleeting thunder imagery of Hamlet, the shipwrecks of the comedies or the thunderbolt of Pericles, there is an instance of storm in every one of Shakespeare's plays. This is the first comprehensive study of Shakespeare's storms. With chapters on Julius Caesar, King Lear, Macbeth, Pericles and The Tempest, the book traces the development of the storm over the second half of the playwright's career, when Shakespeare took the storm to new extremes. It explains the storm effects used in early modern playhouses, and how they filter into Shakespeare' SHAKESPEARE'S STORMS -- Half Title Page -- Title Page -- Copyright Page -- Dedication -- Contents -- Acknowledgements -- Textual note -- Introduction -- 1. Thunder -- 2. Storm and the spectacular: Julius Caesar -- 3. Lightning -- 4. King Lear: storm and the event -- 5. Wind -- 6. Macbeth: supernatural storms, equivocal earthquakes -- 7. Rain -- 8. Pericles: storm and scripture -- 9. The Tempest and theatrical reality -- Conclusion -- Notes -- Select bibliography -- Index

"This collection of original essays by established and emerging scholars approaches the works of Shakespeare from the topical perspective of the History of Emotions. What emerges is not a single paradigm or 'grand narrative', but a variety of approaches, ranging from the historical to the interpretive, illuminating the primacy of emotions in Shakespearean scholarship and theatre. The section 'Emotional Inheritances' looks back to Shakespeare's sources and cultural backgrounds, showing that some aspects of his representations of emotions come from the classics and medieval world; 'Shakespearean Enactments' presents essays that analyse a range of emotional states and issues in the plays themselves; while 'Legacies and Re-Enactments' traces aspects of his influence through later times and down to the present day. Taken together these diverse but related essays present a kaleidoscope of suggestive approaches to the potentially endless subject of emotions in Shakespeare"--

"As contributors to this volume prove, Shakespeare's language of the self relies on descriptions of and reactions to facial expressions and features. An analysis of Shakespeare's treatment of faces has implications for our understanding of the context in which he wrote, and for the ongoing interpretation and production of the plays. By bringing together historians, theorists of performance and critics interested in material culture and philosophies of self, this book makes a significant contribution to our understanding of attitudes towards embodiment in Shakespeare's England" -- Introduction: Shakespeare and the power of the face / James A. Knapp -- Part. I. Powerful faces. 1. "Thy face is mine": faces and fascination in Shakespeare's plays / Sibylle Baumbach; 2. "This book considers early modern and postmodern ideals of health, vigor, ability, beauty, well-being, and happiness, uncovering and historicizing the complex negotiations among physical embodiment, emotional response, and communally-sanctioned behavior in Shakespeare's literary and material world. The volume visits a series of questions about the history of the body and how early modern cultures understand physical ability or vigor, emotional competence or satisfaction, and joy or self-fulfillment. Individual essays investigate the purported disabilities of the "crook-back" King Richard III or the "corpulent" Falstaff, the conflicts between different health-care belief-systems in The Taming of the Shrew and Hamlet, the power of figurative language to delineate or even instigate puberty in the Sonnets or Romeo and Juliet, and the ways in which the powerful or moneyed mediate the access of the poor and injured to cure or even to care. Integrating insights from Disability Studies, Health Studies, and Happiness Studies, this book develops both a detailed literary-historical analysis and a provocative cultural argument about the emphasis we place on popular notions of fitness and contentment today"-- This book considers early modern and postmodern ideals of health, vigor, ability, beauty, well-being, and happiness, uncovering and historicizing the complex negotiations among physical embodiment, emotional response, and communally-sanctioned behavior in Shakespeare's literary and material world. An innovative book looking at how London influenced Shakespeare's drama and how it is so often the true city at the heart of his plays, be it Venice, Rome or even Prospero's Island. Hannah Crawforth offers a lively and engaging new reading of some of Shakespeare's major work, informed by close attention to the language of his drama. The close textual readings and the wealth of contextual material contained in the book make it an ideal companion for a variety of undergraduate courses, as well as those dealing specifically with Shakespearean London, and it will be of particular interest to overseas students.

Shakespeare's Folktale Sources argues that seven plays--The Taming of the Shrew, Titus Andronicus, The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Merchant of Venice, All's Well that End's Well, Measure for Measure, and Cymbeline--derive one or more of their plots directly from folktales. In most cases, scholars have accepted one literary version of the folktale as a source. Recognizing that the same story has circulated orally and occurs in other medieval and early modern written versions allows for new readings of the plays. By acknowledging that a play's source story circulated in multiple forms, we can see how the playwright was engaging his audience on common ground, retelling a story that may have been familiar to many of them, even the illiterate. We can also view the folktale play as a Shakespearean genre, defined by source as the chronicle histories are, that spans and traces the course of Shakespeare's career. The fact that Shakespeare reworked folktales so frequently also changes the way we see the history of the literary folk- or fairy-tale, which is usually thought to bypass England and move from Italian novella collections to eighteenth-century French salons. Each chapter concludes with a bibliography listing versions of each folktale source as a resource for further research and teaching.

"In Shakespeare and Abraham, Ken Jackson illuminates William Shakespeare's dramatic fascination with the story of Abraham's near sacrifice of his son Isaac in Genesis 22. Themes of child killing fill Shakespeare's early plays: Genesis 22 informed Clifford's attack on young Rutland in 3 Henry 6, Hubert's providentially thwarted murder of Arthur in King John, and Aaron the Moor's surprising decision to spare his son amidst the filial slaughters of Titus Andronicus, among others. However, the playwright's full engagement with the biblical narrative does not manifest itself exclusively in scenes involving the sacrifice of children or in verbal borrowings from the famously sparse story of Abraham. Jackson argues that the most important influence of Genesis 22 and its interpretive tradition is to be found in the conceptual framework that Shakespeare develops to explore relationships among ideas of religion, sovereignty, law, and justice. Jackson probes the Shakespearean texts from the vantage of modern theology and critical theory, while also orienting them toward the traditions concerning Abraham in Jewish, Pauline, patristic, medieval, and Reformation sources and early English drama. Consequently, the playwright's "Abrahamic explorations" become strikingly apparent in unexpected places such as the "trial" of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice and the bifurcated structure of Timon of Athens. By situating Shakespeare in a complex genealogy that extends from ancient religion to postmodern philosophy, Jackson inserts Shakespeare into the larger contemporary conversation about religion in the modern world. "Ken Jackson's Shakespeare and Abraham poses a powerful model for how a biblical hero can be recovered within a number of divergent dramatic contexts--both Shakespearean and medieval--as well as in philosophy and theology. Writing with great clarity about challenging ideas, Jackson has led us a great deal closer to understanding the meanings that the binding of Isaac held for Shakespeare." --Julia Reinhard Lupton, University of California, Irvine"--

How we can relate Shakespeare to the politics of our time. Shakespeare moves towards a democratic concept of society over the course of his plays. His dramatisation of how societies hold together or break apart has fresh significance in an age when democracy faces new challenges at a global level. These are some of the conclusions of Gabriel Chanan's illuminating new approach to Shakespeare's plays. Chanan argues that even though Shakespeare could know nothing of modern democracy, he played a fundamental role in building the culture that underlies it. But democracy is still historically young, an incomplete global experiment, facing internal and external challenges and open to accusations of being misused to disguise exploitation. It needs continuing sustenance from Shakespeare's critique of autocracy and models of open-ended thinking. Using abundant illustration from the plays, Chanan's argument is accessible to those without specialist knowledge, yet throws new light on academic debates. He traces the political significance of Shakespeare in terms of development across his work. There are critical turning points: from depicting the external actions of kings to their dreams and nightmares; from critiquing individual reigns to questioning the institution of monarchy; from exposing the errors and evils of rulers to the question of how others can repair the damage. There are also contradictory elements, but ultimately it is Shakespeare's method, even more than his subject matter, which is essential to democracy, showing that there is no fixed right perception of reality, which must be managed by the interaction of opposites. Teachers will find this book immensely useful in explaining to pupils why Shakespeare is relevant now, and where the political themes of an individual play fit into the wider pattern of his work. It gives the essential historical context succinctly and tackles theory with a light touch.

Shakespearean Ecocritisism Across the Genres -- 5. Crowds and Social Networks in Shakespeare -- Conclusion "Combining the latest scientific and philosophical understanding of humankind's place in the world with interpretative methods derived from other politically inflected literary criticism, ecocriticism is providing new insights into literary works both ancient and modern. With case-study analyses of the Tragedies, the Comedies, the History Plays and the late Romances as well as the Sonnets, this book is a wide-ranging introduction to reading Shakespeare in light of contemporary ecocritical theory. Shakespeare and Ecocritical Theory also features a glossary of key critical terms and guides to further reading and online resources, making this an essential resource for students and scholars of Shakespeare at all levels"--
