    "From William Shakespeare to Marilynne Robinson, this book examines representations of interpersonal reconciliation in works of literature, focusing on how these representations draw on the language of divine forgiveness. Christian theology sees divine forgiveness as conditional upon a sinner's remorse and self-abasement before God, but also as a form of grace - unconditional and rooted only in divine love. Van Dijkhuizen explores what happens when this paradoxical forgiveness paradigm comes to serve as a template for interpersonal reconciliation. As A Literary History of Reconciliation shows, literary writers imagine interpersonal reconciliation as being centrally about power and hierarchy, and present forgiveness without power as longed for but ever elusive.     Das Interesse am Mythos ist aus der europäischen Kultur- und Literaturgeschichte nicht wegzudenken. Es hat seinen Niederschlag in einer beinahe unüberschaubaren Vielzahl wissenschaftlicher Mythostheorien sowie in einer vielgestaltigen literarischen und künstlerischen Mythenrezeption gefunden. Dass dieses Interesse dabei nicht zuletzt dem Mythos als Zeugnis des Fremden gilt, ist die zentrale These der Studie. Mit dem neu eingeführten Begriff der mythologischen Alterität soll in diesem Sinne eine – bislang in ihrer Bedeutung sowie in ihrer Produktivität unterschätzte – Konstante im neuzeitlichen Mythosverständnis bzw. eine Gemeinsamkeit verschiedener Mythosauffassungen in den Fokus gerückt werden. So wird zum einen gezeigt, dass zahlreiche Theorien des Mythos (von Giambattista Vico und David Hume bis zu René Girard und Hans Blumenberg) ihre Gegenstände als Zeugnisse des kulturell oder auch des radikal Fremden beschreiben und interpretieren. Zum anderen wird anhand verschiedenartiger Beispiele aus der englischen Literatur vom 19. bis zum frühen 21. Jahrhundert erläutert, inwiefern auch in der literarischen Mythenrezeption das Fremde bzw. Differenzen von Eigenem und Fremdem thematisch und formal virulent werden

    In this innovative study, Bernadette Andrea focuses on the contributions of women and their writings in the early modern cultural encounters between England and the Islamic world. She examines previously neglected material, such as the diplomatic correspondence between Queen Elizabeth I and the Ottoman Queen Mother Safiye at the end of the sixteenth century, and resituates canonical accounts, including Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's travelogue of the Ottoman empire at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Her study advances our understanding of how women negotiated conflicting discourses of gender, orientalism, and imperialism at a time when the Ottoman empire was hugely powerful and England was still a marginal nation with limited global influence.     John Cox tells the intriguing story of stage devils from their earliest appearance in English plays to the closing of the theatres by parliamentary order in 1642. The book represents a major revision of E. K. Chambers' ideas of stage devils in The Medieval Stage (1903), arguing that this is not a history of gradual secularization, as scholarship has maintained for the last century, but rather that stage devils were profoundly shaped from the outset by the assumptions of sacred drama and retained this shape virtually unchanged until the advent of permanent commercial theatres near London. The book spans both medieval and Renaissance drama including the medieval Mystery cycles on the one hand, through to plays by Greene, Marlowe, Shakespeare (1 and 2 Henry VI), Jonson, Middleton and Davenant. An appendix lists all known devil plays in English from the beginning to 1642

    Whether situated in churches or circulating in more flexible, mobile works - manuscript or printed texts, jewels or rosaries, personal bequests or antique 'rarities' - monuments were ubiquitous in post-Reformation England. In this period of religious change, the unsettled meanings of sacred sites and artifacts encouraged a new conception of remembrance and, with it, changed relationships between devotional and secular writings, arts, and identities. Beginning in the parish church, Shaping Remembrance from Shakespeare to Milton moves beyond that space to see remembrance as shaping dynamic systems within which early modern men and women experienced loss and recollection. Removing monuments from parochial or antiquarian concerns, this study re-imagines them as pervasively involved with other commemorative works, not least the writings of our most canonical authors. These far-reaching, flexible chapters combine three critical strands - religion, materiality, and gender - to describe the arts of remembrance as material and textual remains of living webs of connection in which creators and creations are mutually involved
