Torture - that most notorious aspect of medieval culture and society - has evolved into a dominant mythology, suggesting that the Middle Ages was a period during which sadistic torment was inflicted on citizens with impunity and without provocation: popular museums displaying such gruesome implements as the rack, the strappado, the gridiron, the wheel, and the Iron Maiden can be found in many modern European cities. These lurid images of medieval torture have re-emerged within recent discussions on American foreign policy and the introduction of torture legislation as a weapon in the "War on Terror", and raised questions about its history and reality, particularly given its proliferation in some literary genres and its relative absence in others. This book challenges preconceived ideas about the prevalence of torture and judicial brutality in medieval society by arguing that their portryal in literature is not mimetic. Instead, it argues that the depictions of torture and brutality represent satire, critique and dissent; they have didactic and political functions in opposing the status quo. Torture and brutality are intertextual literary motifs that negotiate cultural anxieties of national identity; by situating these practices outside their own boundaries in the realm of the barbarian "Other", medieval and early-modern authors define themselves and their nations in opposition to them. Works examined range from Chaucer to the Scandinavian sagas to Shakespeare, enabling a true comparative approach to be taken. Larissa Tracy is Associate Professor, Longwood University

Torture - that most notorious aspect of medieval culture and society - has evolved into a dominant mythology, suggesting that the Middle Ages was a period during which sadistic torment was inflicted on citizens with impunity and without provocation: popular museums displaying such gruesome implements as the rack, the strappado, the gridiron, the wheel, and the Iron Maiden can be found in many modern European cities. These lurid images of medieval torture have re-emerged within recent discussions on American foreign policy and the introduction of torture legislation as a weapon in the "War on Terror", and raised questions about its history and reality, particularly given its proliferation in some literary genres and its relative absence in others. This book challenges preconceived ideas about the prevalence of torture and judicial brutality in medieval society by arguing that their portryal in literature is not mimetic. Instead, it argues that the depictions of torture and brutality represent satire, critique and dissent; they have didactic and political functions in opposing the status quo. Torture and brutality are intertextual literary motifs that negotiate cultural anxieties of national identity; by situating these practices outside their own boundaries in the realm of the barbarian "Other", medieval and early-modern authors define themselves and their nations in opposition to them. Works examined range from Chaucer to the Scandinavian sagas to Shakespeare, enabling a true comparative approach to be taken. Larissa Tracy is Associate Professor, Longwood University

    Maríu saga, the Old Norse-Icelandic life of the Virgin Mary, survives in nineteen manuscripts. While the 1871 edition of the saga provides two versions based on multiple manuscripts and prints significant variants in the notes, it does not preserve the literary and social contexts of those manuscripts. In the extant manuscripts Maríu saga rarely exists in the codex by itself. This study restores the saga to its manuscript contexts in order to better understand the meaning of the text within its manuscript matrix, why it was copied in the specific manuscripts it was, and how it was read and used by the different communities that preserved the manuscripts.

    The Old Norse magic known as seiðr is associated in various ways with the phenomenon of liminality. This study traces the threshold-crossing elements in the tales of seiðr and the two divine seiðr masters Óðinn and Freyja. Using the mostly fragmentary sources, the author reconstructs the conceptual ideas behind the connection of seiðr and liminality. Unter den zahlreichen Erscheinungsformen der Magie in den altnordischen Quellen wird seiðr besonders hervorgehoben, da er mit einem Verstoß gegen die in der altnordischen Gesellschaft vorherrschenden Geschlechterkonventionen konnotiert wird. Doch ist dies längst nicht die einzige Grenzüberschreitung, mit welcher seiðr assoziiert ist. Vielmehr steht der seiðr-Komplex auf vielfältige Weise mit dem Phänomen der Liminalität in Verbindung: Das Übertreten von Grenzen – zwischen dem Diesseits und der Anderwelt, zwischen Fremd und Vertraut, Mensch und Tier, Männlich und Weiblich – sowie die Unterminierung der dazugehörigen Kategorien sind elementare und bis in alte Überlieferungsschichten zurückreichende Merkmale des seiðr, die in den erhaltenen Texten jedoch nur mehr bruchstückhaft erkennbar werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit spürt diese Mosaikteile innerhalb von seiðr-Episoden der altnordischen Literatur sowie im Mythos der beiden göttlichen seiðr-Meister Óðinn und Freyja auf und rekonstruiert, welche gedanklichen Konzeptionen hinter der Verbindung von seiðr und Liminalität stehen.

    In the pop-cultural imagination, medieval Iceland is associated with an exaggerated, warrior-like image of masculinity. Much less-known are the portrayals of figures that are branded as unmanly in the Sagas of the Icelanders, which reveal how fiercely contested social ideas of masculinity were. This volume delves into these figures and conflicts at a literary level. Mit diesem Band liegt erstmalig eine literarische Analyse der beiden Konzepte ergi und níð vor, die das Gesamtcorpus der Isländersagas in den Blick nimmt. Ausgehend von älteren und kontinentalen Quellen wird zunächst die historische Entwicklung der beiden Konzepte in Bezug auf ihre verschiedenen Bedeutungsaspekte nachvollzogen und diese Quellen hinsichtlich ihres semantischen Gehalts aufgeschlüsselt. Die daran anschließenden Textanalysen stützen sich methodisch auf Erkenntnisse der bisherigen altnordistischen Forschung, nehmen Bezug auf gendertheoretische Untersuchungen und bieten narratologisch basierte Lesungen und Interpretationen der relavanten Textstellen. Die zentralen Fragestellungen richten sich auf die Figurendarstellungen und die Erzählhaltungen. Dabei werden ergi und níð als soziale Phänomene begriffen, denen eine Schlüsselrolle für das Verständnis des Gesellschaftsbildes der Isländersagas, ihrer textlichen Gestalt sowie der Strukturierung und narrativen Darbietung ihrer Konflikte zukommt.Das Werk bietet sowohl neue Interpretationsperspektiven für die Isländersagas als auch Ansätze zur Untersuchung anderer Textgattungen.

Torture - that most notorious aspect of medieval culture and society - has evolved into a dominant mythology, suggesting that the Middle Ages was a period during which sadistic torment was inflicted on citizens with impunity and without provocation: popular museums displaying such gruesome implements as the rack, the strappado, the gridiron, the wheel, and the Iron Maiden can be found in many modern European cities. These lurid images of medieval torture have re-emerged within recent discussions on American foreign policy and the introduction of torture legislation as a weapon in the "War on Terror", and raised questions about its history and reality, particularly given its proliferation in some literary genres and its relative absence in others. This book challenges preconceived ideas about the prevalence of torture and judicial brutality in medieval society by arguing that their portryal in literature is not mimetic. Instead, it argues that the depictions of torture and brutality represent satire, critique and dissent; they have didactic and political functions in opposing the status quo. Torture and brutality are intertextual literary motifs that negotiate cultural anxieties of national identity; by situating these practices outside their own boundaries in the realm of the barbarian "Other", medieval and early-modern authors define themselves and their nations in opposition to them. Works examined range from Chaucer to the Scandinavian sagas to Shakespeare, enabling a true comparative approach to be taken. Larissa Tracy is Associate Professor, Longwood University.
