    Main description: Wirnt von Grafenberg's 'Wigalois' is one of the most successful Arthurian romances from the 'classical' period of medieval German literature. So far, however, research on the work has failed to provide a complete lexicographic investigation of the work. This lemmatized concordance fills the gap. For the first time it provides a full list of lemmatized references to the words used in the work (ed. Kapteyn) in the form of flexibly delimited reference citations. The PDF files of the concordance and the printed version of the text are to be found on the CD-ROM included. They greatly facilitate identification and verification of all lexical references

    Main description: Wirnts von Grafenberg »Wigalois« gilt als einer der erfolgreichsten Artusromane der "klassischen" Periode des deutschen Mittelalters, ist aber in der Forschung noch nie so vollständig lexikographisch erschlossen worden wie in dieser lemmatisierten Konkordanz, mit der zum ersten Mal sämtliche Wortbelege des Werkes (ed. Kapteyn), vertreten durch das jeweils flexibel abgegrenzte Belegzitat, unter ihrem Lemma auffindbar gemacht werden. Die PDF-Dateien von Konkordanz und Textabdruck auf der dem Band beigegebenen CD-ROM erleichtern die Identifikation und Prüfung jedes Wortbelegs erheblich

    This is the first introduction in German to the Wigalois by Wirnt von Grafenberg, written around 1200. The introduction is written for the general reader, with a target readership both of students of medieval German literature and of a wider audience of those seeking an initial approach to the text. Each section of the romance is summarized exactly, the most important intertextual references are pointed up, and each scene is located within the overall context of the text using the findings of most recent research. In addition, this introduction provides information on the author, transmission of the text, its editorial history, and the structure and most important complexes of motifs in the Wigalois. Particular emphasis is placed on the productive medieval reception of the romance and its most important representatives, with the Erfurt version discovered in 2006 being presented for the first time.     Die Monographie stellt den im Jahr 2006 in einer Erfurter Bibliothek aufgefundenen einzigen Textzeugen einer strophischen Bearbeitung des "Wigalois" Wirnts von Grafenberg vor. Als Verfasser der Bearbeitung wird im Epilog des Erfurter Fragments (1455) Dietrich von Hopfgarten genannt. Dietrich bearbeitete Wirnts Artusroman gerade so, als handelte es sich um einen heldenepischen Stoff, in dessen Zentrum mit dem Ritter Wigelis ein faktisch unproblematischer Held steht. Konsequent baute Dietrich damit Wirnts Konzept nach den Gesetzen heroisierenden Erzählens weiter aus. Der vorliegende Band ediert den Text des Erfurter Fragments erstmals, ordnet ihn sprachlich und überlieferungsgeschichtlich ein, ermittelt Fakten zum mutmaßlichen Autor und analysiert die erhaltenen Szenen vor dem Hintergrund der breiten Tradition der Retextualisierung von Wirnts Roman. Er behandelt ausführlich die Problematik des Gattungstransfers und lokalisiert das ungewöhnliche Werk in den Kontext der im mitteldeutschen Raum präsenten erzählenden Literatur des Mittelalters.

The German Wigalois / Viduvilt adaptations grow from a multistage process: a German text adapted into Yiddish adapted into German, creating adaptations actively shaped by a minority culture within a majority culture.     This publication uncovers two previously dismissed pre-modern adaptations of the Middle High German Wigalois (1215) by exploring their different approaches to female agency in comparison with the original Wigalois, the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) and the German Wigoleis (15th ct.). Traditionally, scholarship often concentrated on the Yiddish text presenting female figures as behaving in a "Jewish manner" or embodying famous Jewish mythical figures such as Lilith (see Achim Jaeger / Robert G. Warnock). Rather than trying to argue for or against a figure’s "Jewishness," I evaluate these interpretations from the perspective of Arthurian Literature by showing that the construction of female agency is at the center of all three adaptations of this important chapter of German-Jewish literature and culture

    In Imagining the Text , James Brown examines ekphrasis - the verbal representation of a visual representation - in Wirnt von Gravenberg's thirteenth-century Arthurian romance Wigalois , one of the most popular and enduring stories in the Middle High German literary tradition. Through close reading of the text and examining illustrated Wigalois manuscripts, early print editions, and frescoes, Brown explores how ekphrasis structures the narrative, harmonizes potential conflicts in the text, and contributes to the construction of courtly identity. Imagining the Text demonstrates that the vibrant symbiosis of word and image is crucial to the poem's sustained popularity for more than six hundred years, and contributes to the history of the book and to the study of medieval and modern modes of perception.

    Wirnt von Grafenberg's 'Wigalois' is one of the most successful Arthurian romances from the 'classical' period of medieval German literature. So far, however, research on the work has failed to provide a complete lexicographic investigation of the work. This lemmatized concordance fills the gap. For the first time it provides a full list of lemmatized references to the words used in the work (ed. Kapteyn) in the form of flexibly delimited reference citations. The PDF files of the concordance and the printed version of the text are to be found on the CD-ROM included. They greatly facilitate identification and verification of all lexical references. Wirnts von Grafenberg »Wigalois« gilt als einer der erfolgreichsten Artusromane der "klassischen" Periode des deutschen Mittelalters, ist aber in der Forschung noch nie so vollständig lexikographisch erschlossen worden wie in dieser lemmatisierten Konkordanz, mit der zum ersten Mal sämtliche Wortbelege des Werkes (ed. Kapteyn), vertreten durch das jeweils flexibel abgegrenzte Belegzitat, unter ihrem Lemma auffindbar gemacht werden. Die PDF-Dateien von Konkordanz und Textabdruck auf der dem Band beigegebenen CD-ROM erleichtern die Identifikation und Prüfung jedes Wortbelegs erheblich.

    This is the first introduction in German to the Wigalois by Wirnt von Grafenberg, written around 1200. The introduction is written for the general reader, with a target readership both of students of medieval German literature and of a wider audience of those seeking an initial approach to the text. Each section of the romance is summarized exactly, the most important intertextual references are pointed up, and each scene is located within the overall context of the text using the findings of most recent research. In addition, this introduction provides information on the author, transmission of the text, its editorial history, and the structure and most important complexes of motifs in the Wigalois. Particular emphasis is placed on the productive medieval reception of the romance and its most important representatives, with the Erfurt version discovered in 2006 being presented for the first time. Dietrich bearbeitete Wirnts Artusroman gerade so, als handelte es sich um einen heldenepischen Stoff, in dessen Zentrum mit dem Ritter Wigelis ein faktisch unproblematischer Held steht. Konsequent baute Dietrich damit Wirnts Konzept nach den Gesetzen heroisierenden Erzählens weiter aus. Der vorliegende Band ediert den Text des Erfurter Fragments erstmals, ordnet ihn sprachlich und überlieferungsgeschichtlich ein, ermittelt Fakten zum mutmaßlichen Autor und analysiert die erhaltenen Szenen vor dem Hintergrund der breiten Tradition der Retextualisierung von Wirnts Roman. Er behandelt ausführlich die Problematik des Gattungstransfers und lokalisiert das ungewöhnliche Werk in den Kontext der im mitteldeutschen Raum präsenten erzählenden Literatur des Mittelalters.

    Wirnt von Grafenberg's 'Wigalois' is one of the most successful Arthurian romances from the 'classical' period of medieval German literature. So far, however, research on the work has failed to provide a complete lexicographic investigation of the work. This lemmatized concordance fills the gap. For the first time it provides a full list of lemmatized references to the words used in the work (ed. Kapteyn) in the form of flexibly delimited reference citations. The PDF files of the concordance and the printed version of the text are to be found on the CD-ROM included. They greatly facilitate identification and verification of all lexical references. Wirnts von Grafenberg »Wigalois« gilt als einer der erfolgreichsten Artusromane der "klassischen" Periode des deutschen Mittelalters, ist aber in der Forschung noch nie so vollständig lexikographisch erschlossen worden wie in dieser lemmatisierten Konkordanz, mit der zum ersten Mal sämtliche Wortbelege des Werkes (ed. Kapteyn), vertreten durch das jeweils flexibel abgegrenzte Belegzitat, unter ihrem Lemma auffindbar gemacht werden. Die PDF-Dateien von Konkordanz und Textabdruck auf der dem Band beigegebenen CD-ROM erleichtern die Identifikation und Prüfung jedes Wortbelegs erheblich.

    This publication uncovers two previously dismissed pre-modern adaptations of the Middle High German Wigalois (1215) by exploring their different approaches to female agency in comparison with the original Wigalois, the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) and the German Wigoleis (15th ct.). Traditionally, scholarship often concentrated on the Yiddish text presenting female figures as behaving in a "Jewish manner" or embodying famous Jewish mythical figures such as Lilith (see Achim Jaeger / Robert G. Warnock). Rather than trying to argue for or against a figure’s "Jewishness," I evaluate these interpretations from the perspective of Arthurian Literature by showing that the construction of female agency is at the center of all three adaptations of this important chapter of German-Jewish literature and culture.
