    Wie sieht poetologisches Denken in augusteischer Zeit aus, was sind seine Themen, Motive und Akteure? Das Nachdenken darüber, was Dichtung ist, wie sie entsteht und nach welchen Kriterien sie zu beurteilen ist, genießt in der augusteischen Literatur einen hohen Stellenwert und manifestiert sich vornehmlich in den Dichtwerken selbst; beides ist an Horaz’ Ars poetica deutlich abzulesen. Doch poetologische Reflexion prägt auch andere Werke der Epoche. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die zahlreichen Künstlerfiguren, die sich vor allem bei Vergil und Ovid finden, und betrachtet ihr Handeln als ästhetische Reflexionsfiguren des poetischen Prozesses. Unter ihnen sind die Sänger Orpheus, Arion, Iopas, Cretheus, Daphnis, Menalcas und Mopsus, die Instrumentalmusiker Misenus, Marsyas und Pan, der Bildhauer Pygmalion, der Werkmeister Daedalus und sein Neffe Perdix sowie – als eine der wenigen, aber durchaus vorhandenen weiblichen Figuren – die Weberin Arachne. Durch die Analyse dieser Künstlerfiguren erschließt die Arbeit eine neue Perspektive auf die poetologischen Diskurse der augusteischen Zeit.****************How is the poetological thought of the Augustan period to be defined; what are its themes, motives and protagonists? Consideration of the very nature of poetry, how it is created and the criteria by which it should be evaluated is a matter of great significance in Augustan literature and is specifically manifested in the poetic works themselves; both issues are clearly identifiable in Horace’s Ars Poetica. Yet poetological reflection has obviously influenced other works of this epoch.This study will examine the numerous figures of artists which are preponderantly found in the works of Ovid and Virgil, and consider their aesthetic representation as reflective figures of the poetic process. Among them there will be discussed the singers Orpheus, Arion, Iopas, Cretheus, Daphnis, Menalcas and Mopsus, the instrumental musicians Misenus, Marsyas and Pan, the sculptor Pygmalion, the craftsman Daedalus and his nephew Perdix, together with the weaver Arachne – one of the few, but nonetheless present, female figures. Through the analysis of these figures of artists, this study opens up a new perspective on the poetological discourse of the Augustan era.

    This book is an examination of the ideological reception of Virgil at specific moments in the last two millennia. The author focuses on the emperor Augustus in the poetry of Virgil, detects in the poets and grammarians of antiquity alternately a collaborative oppositional reading and an attempt to suppress such reading, studies creative translation (particularly Dryden's), which reasserts the 'Augustan' Virgil, and examines naive translation which can be truer to the spirit of Virgil. Scrutiny of 'textual cleansing', philology's rewriting or excision of troubling readings, leads to readings by both supporters and opponents of fascism and National Socialism to support or subvert the latter-day Augustus. The book ends with a diachronic examination of the ways successive ages have tried to make the Aeneid conform to their upbeat expectations of this poet

    At the end of the Thebaid, Statius enjoins his epic 'not to compete with the divine Aeneid but rather to follow at a distance and always revere its footprints'. The nature of the Thebaid's interaction with the Aeneid is, however, a matter of debate. This 2007 book argues that the Thebaid reworks themes, scenes, and ideas from Virgil in order to show that the Aeneid's representation of monarchy is inadequate. It also demonstrates how the Thebaid's fascination with horror, spectacle, and unspeakable violence is tied to Statius' critique of the moral and political virtues at the heart of the Aeneid. Professor Ganiban offers both a way to interpret the Thebaid and a largely sequential reading of the poem

    Vergil gilt als der am besten überlieferte lateinische Autor. Doch liegen die frühesten Handschriften immer noch mindestens 400 Jahre nach dem Original und geben uns nur wenig Aufschluß über die Geschichte des Textes in der Generation nach dem Tod des größten römischen Dichters. Otto Zwierlein weist eine um 20-25 n. Chr. veranstaltete Gesamtausgabe nach, die neben den ? durch Einfügungen erweiterten ? Werken Vergils auch dessen angebliche Jugendgedichte enthielt, die wir heute in der Appendix Vergiliana lesen. Derselbe Herausgeber hatte sich offenbar zuvor schon des Ovid angenommen. Zwierlein identifiziert ihn mit dem in einer der Epistulae ex Ponto als Elegiker und Epiker apostrophierten Iulius Montanus, einer Gestalt aus dem Deklamationsbetrieb der frühen Kaiserzeit. Der vorliegende Band bietet einen Einblick in die antike Vergilkritik sowie die antike Editionspraxis insgesamt und faßt die Ergebnisse eines echtheitskritischen Kommentars zum ganzen Vergil und zu exemplarisch ausgewählten Partien aus allen Werken Ovids (einschließlich der jeweiligen Appendices) zusammen, der die Überarbeitungsschicht aus tiberischer Zeit ablöst und so den ursprünglichen Text soweit wie möglich wiederzugewinnen sucht. Virgil’s works are regarded as being the best preserved of any Latin author’s. However, the earliest extant mss. were produced at least 400 years after the originals, and tell us very little about the history of the texts in the generation following the death of the greatest Roman poet. Otto Zwierlein demonstrates the existence of a complete edition produced around 20?25 AD which, in addition to Virgil's works ? extended by textual insertions ? also included the alleged poems from his youth which we can now read in the Appendix Vergiliana. Previously the same editor had obviously taken care of Ovid. Zwierlein identifies him with Iulius Montanus, a figure from the world of declamation in the early Imperial Age, who is referred to as an elegiac and epic poet in one of the Epistulae ex Ponto. The present volume affords an insight into ancient Virgil criticism and the editorial practice of classical antiquity, and summarizes the findings of a critical commentary on the whole of Virgil’s work and exemplary selections from all of Ovid's work (including the relevant appendices) which removes the later alterations from the time of Tiberius and thus attempts to restore the original text as far as possible.
