    Bringing together leading critics and literary scholars, A New Vocabulary for Global Modernism argues for new ways of understanding the nature and development of twentieth-century literature and culture. Scholars have largely understood modernism as an American and European phenomenon. Those parameters have expanded in recent decades, but the incorporation of multiple origins and influences has often been tied to older conceptual frameworks that make it difficult to think of modernism globally. Providing alternative approaches, A New Vocabulary for Global Modernism introduces pathways through global archives and new frameworks that offer a richer, more representative set of concepts for the analysis of literary and cultural works.In separate essays each inspired by a critical term, this collection explores what happens to the foundational concepts of modernism and the methods we bring to modernist studies when we approach the field as a global phenomenon. Their work transforms the intellectual paradigms we have long associated with modernism, such as tradition, antiquity, style, and translation. New paradigms, such as context, slum, copy, pantomime, and puppets emerge as the archive extends beyond its European center. In bringing together and reexamining the familiar as well as the emergent, the contributors to this volume offer an invaluable and original approach to studying the intersection of world literature and modernist studies

This collection of critical essays is designed to lay the foundations for a new theory of the European avant-garde. It starts from the assumption that not one all-embracing intention of all avant-garde movements - i.e. the intention of "reintegrating art into the practice of life" (Peter Bürger) - but the challenge of new cultural technologies, in particular photography and cinema, constitutes the main driving force of the formation and further development of the avant-garde. This approach permits to establish a theoretical framework that takes into account the diversity of artistic aims and directions of the various art movements and encourages a wide and open exploration of the multifaceted and often contradictory nature of the great variety of avant-gardist innovations. Following the theoretical foundation of the new approach, individual contributions concentrate on a diverse range of avant-gardist concepts, trends and manifestations from cubist painting and the literary work of Apollinaire and Gertrude Stein to the screeching voices of futurism, dadaist photomontage and film, surrealist photographs and sculptures and neo-avant-gardist theories as developed by the French group OuLiPo. The volume closes with new insights gained from placing the avant-garde in the contexts of literary institutions and psychoanalytical and sociological concepts. The main body of the volume is based on presentations and discussions of a three-day research seminar held at Yale University, New Haven, in February 2000. The research group formed on this occasion will continue with its efforts to elaborate a new theory of the avant-garde in the coming years

    "Modernism" presents a judicious selection of key works relating to literary modernism. Designed to help readers engage with the major critical debates, particularly how literary modernism relates to modernity, as well as to other literary and cultural movements, this guide presents a critical history from the earliest reviews to the most recent theoretical statements. The first of the book's two sections introduces key issues in modernism, looking at the way in which modernist writers themselves understood and constructed modernism. The second section explores how subsequent generations have built upon these constructions and brought new interpretations to the subject. Focusing on the continental avant-gardes of the nineteen-tens and twenties, Sascha Bru's original and provocative book fundamentally revises our understanding of modernism's cultural and political history.Bru brings together a wide range of European experimental writers and provides detailed analyses of Italian futurist F.T. Marinetti, German Dadaist Richard Huelsenbeck and Belgian expressionist Paul van Ostaijen. Bru locates these writers within their exceptional democratic context and demonstrates how the modernist avant-garde, during the First World War and the upheavals that followed, found itself caught up in a series of 'states of exception'. In such states legal democratic institutions were bracketed and set aside, and 'literature' as an autonomous realm was temporarily suspended. Faced with extreme forms of politicisation, avant-gardists throughout Europe tried to safeguard literature's autonomy in a variety of ways. Mit komparatistischen Ausblicken in die europäische – vor allem die französische, aber auch die skandinavische und russische – Literatur rekonstruiert Caroline Pross die wissenschaftlichen (insbesondere psychiatriegeschichtlichen) Grundlagen dieses wirkungsmächtigen Topos.Dabei legt die Autorin den Fokus auf Rezeption und Vermittlung der Dekadenz-Theoreme im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs und im literarischen Schreiben. Die literarische »Arbeit am Schema« der Dekadenz wird in einlässlichen Textlektüren dargestellt, dabei werden Romane von Emile Zola, Max Nordau, Gerard Ouckama Knoop, Eduard von Keyserling und Thoman Mann neu erschlossen.

    Explores the significance of the British fin de siècle in Scotland and Ireland, as well as some regional cities in EnglandThe late nineteenth-century fin de siècle has proved an enduringly fascinating moment in literary and cultural history. It is associated with the emergence of intriguing figures—such as the 'new woman' and 'uranian'; with contradictory impulses—of decadence and decay on the one hand, and of experiment and renewal, on the other; as well as with unprecedented intercultural exchange, especially between Britain and France. The 22 newly-commissioned essays collected here re-examine some of the key concepts taken to define the fin de siècle, while also introducing hitherto overlooked cultural phenomena into the frame, such as the importance of humanitarianism. The impact of recent research in material culture is explored, particularly how the history of the book and the history of performance culture is changing our understanding of this period. A wide range of cultural activities is discussed—from participation in avant-garde theatre to interior decoration and from the writing of poetry to political and religious activism.     This innovative volume puts modernist literature in its cultural, intellectual, and global context, within the framework of the year 1913. This significant year was marked by many critical events and happenings, such as the first international recognition of non-Western writers when the Nobel Prize in literature was awarded to Rabindranath Tagore; it was also the last year of peace before the eruption of the First World War.; "1913" examines the wide range of diverse artistic, literary, and political endeavours undertaken in this one year. For example, while Yeats and Pound were collaborating at Stone Cottage and discovering Japanese culture, Joyce was completing his autobiographical novel in Trieste, Du Bois was creating his Ethiopian pageant in New York, and Paris was resounding with the scandal caused by Stravinsky's contested Rite of Spring. The book also explores and compares Apollinaire's "Alcools" and Rilke's "Spanish Trilogy with Pound's Personae", and Edith Wharton's "The Custom of the Country with Proust's Swann's Way".
