It is 1995, it is the Eurovision Song Contest and Lulu's 'Boom Bang-a-Bang' is the soundtrack to this exuberant conjuration of a Eurovision party that starts as camp and ends as farce, though there is a real power to Harvey's discussion of sexuality. Norman the lonely neighbour upstairs is trying every trick in the book to get himself invited to the party, but it is strictly for close friends only. In fact, it's really just for people who knew Michael, Lee's deceased boyfriend, as the couple used to host the best Eurovision parties and Lee wants to honour his memory. But most of his friends have opted for a rival party, and so Lee is left with his sister Wendy, the camp and irrepressible Steph, the gorgeous raver Roy, and the sparring couple Nick and Tanya. And the evening he had planned, full of kitsch, Bucks Fizz and douze points, goes astray amid the covert love affairs, accidental fires, memories and tears. 'Boom Bang-A-Bang' was first performed in 1995 at the Bush Theatre, London.

A street is being evacuated, people piled into trucks - Peter and Donna are ejected from their room, one suitcase each. They are afraid for their son Luke, but he puts on a uniform and joins the fighting, asking questions of an ailing and silent world. 'Born' was first staged at the Avignon Festival in 2006. It is the third play in Bond's 'The Paris Pentad' (originally called 'The Colline Tetralogy'), preceded by 'The Crime of the Twenty-First Century' and 'Coffee', and followed by 'People' and 'Innocence'.

Not much has changed in the days since Maud's husband, Victor, died, except for the addition of the casket in the music room. She and her son Maurice are still pottering around the house, watching television and enjoying their eccentric hobbies. Everything becomes much less comfortable, however, when her other children arrive for the funeral. Quirky, dark, and hilarious, 'Born in the Gardens' combines a commentary on Thatcherite politics with an examination of a family in transition. It was written for the bicentennial anniversary of the Theatre Royal, now the Bristol Old Vic, in 1979.

'Bouncers', originally produced at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1977, is an outrageous and hilarious parody of the disco scene. The four brutish bouncers of the title portray over twenty different characters as we are invited for a night out on the town. We see them as giggly girls and lads on the make preparing for the big night out as we follow their progress to the disco floor. There, we also meet an entire cross-section of disco-goers, including Hooray Henrys, pogoing punks and drunken slobs! The evening's events are set against the tatty glitzy glamour, flashing lights and pulsating beat of the night-club scene. 'Bouncers (1990s Remix)' is a revised and expanded version, first given in Hull in 1991.

A typical day in Brighton; two working class couples - Derek and Dinah, Dave and Doreen - are on a day trip to the beach. But Brighton is changing, and the friends can't keep up. The result is a vengeful act of violence that exposes the gaps and similarities between class, gender and sexual orientations. Brighton Beach Scumbags' compassionately explores the mutual incomprehension inherent in the divide between heterosexuality and homosexuality, and the middle and working classes. It premiered at the Sallis Benney Theatre, Brighton, in October 1991.

'Bulrusher', set in 1955, is a coming-of-age narrative in which the title character, abandoned as a baby and taken in by strangers, navigates a world where she finds herself increasingly outside the mainstream of Boonville, California, the small country town where she was raised. When a black visitor from Alabama arrives in the town, Bulrusher begins to confront the norms and attitudes that she and those in her town take for granted. 'Bulrusher' was premiered in New York in March 2006.

First staged at the Almeida Theatre in 2011, 'Butterfly Kiss' unfolds the story of Lily Ross's life and crime through oblique, shifting and mesmeric scenes, her interlaced memories revealing the psychosexual tangle of her childhood and the events that led up to her trial. From her jail cell Lily summons up her past, a vivid collage of cross-fades and flashbacks cumulatively revealing aspects of her experience. Her relationships are spikily chronicled in hard-edged scenes, all leading in an impossible multiplicity of ways to the terrible truth of what she has done to her mother.

'Bye bye Columbus', a television play first broadcast by the BBC in 1992, is a wry and mocking portrait of a man who sailed halfway across the world for a hint of gold. Peter Barnes mockingly dramatises the distinctly unheroic expedition of Christopher Columbus, which changed the face of the globe, though not entirely in the way he was expecting.

Set in the 17th century, 'Byrthrite' tells the story of a group of women who, using a variety of tactics and paths, fight back against the growing, male-dominated obsession with herbal medicine, so-called 'witchcraft', and the purging of innocent women. Daniels repeatedly shows the connection between the medical profession and the subjugation of women: as timely an observation in the era of IVF and the fight for abortion rights as it was in 17th century Britain, suggesting that solidarity amongst women in this matter can and should transcend all other dichotomies of politics, religion and wealth. 'Byrthrite' was first produced in the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, London, in 1986.

Set in Cardiff's east side, Peter Gill's play offers a vivid portrait of a community the Tories thought they had got rid of, and New Labour would prefer to forget. 'Cardiff East' raises essential questions: What is family value? What does it feel like to be an immigrant in your own country? And most importantly, why don't the Welsh reach for the Armalite? Uncompromising and desperately real, with an undercurrent of ironic humour, Cardiff East builds towards an inexorable climax, which combines hope and tragedy in equal parts. 'Cardiff East' premiered at the National Theatre, London, in February 1997.

'Category B' is a sharp and hard-hitting play about the brutal power structures of prison life. It is set in a Category B prison, where all offenders are placed after they are first convicted: it is tough, and dangerous, and compelling. Inside C Wing, Thames Gate Prison, it's the screws that have the keys, but all too often it's the prisoners that have the power. Williams's play was first performed as part of the 'Not Black and White' season at the Tricycle Theatre, London, in 2009.

In the wake of the publication of his controversial book on adolescent sexuality, Dick and his wife, Liz, have retreated with their family to the French countryside. Joined by their friends Phil and Diana for a child-free weekend, they enjoy the sunshine and the cheap wine until certain unsavoury revelations come to light. At the worst moment possible, two reporters appear to interview Dick, causing great worry among the couples that all their secrets will be aired in the press. Nichols drew inspiration for 'Chez Nous' from time spent at his own family's home in France. This darkly comedic, and sometimes deeply shocking play was first produced in London in 1976.

An early work of Howard Brenton, first produced in 1969, 'Christie in Love' is based on the true events surrounding the interrogation and execution of serial killer John Reginald Christie. Brenton's disturbing writing portrays a stupidly aggressive police force dealing with a pathetically tormented man. Contrasting the everyday, ordinary demeanour of the killer with the disgusting, extra-ordinary atrocities he committed, Brenton asks what makes any of us different from that man and what is stopping us from becoming like him?

It is Christmas at the A and E of a Hull hospital; as Keith the security guard stays out of doors to keep an eye on the patients, their families, and the staff, we see an array of people come and go: from drugged-up Stevo to fagged-out Len, each with their own little mini-dramas to be seen. But Kath, the A and E nurse who this time last year lost her husband, is faced with the biggest drama of all, when she unexpectedly receives two tickets for a city-break to Prague. 'Christmas Crackers' was first performed in December 2006 at Spring Street Theatre, Hull.

First produced in 2005 at London's National Theatre, 'Citizenship' is a bittersweet one-act comedy about growing up, following a boy's frank and messy search to discover his sexual identity. Tom dreams of being kissed, but he's not sure whether by a man or by a woman, and he feels he should choose pretty quickly. His friends' homophobic teasing and interrogations about what he did with his friend Amy the other night leave Tom no space to make up his mind, and he's got no one to ask for advice, except maybe people on the internet. 'Citizenship' captures adolescent confusion with a witty and sensitive charm, crackling with humorous and authentic dialogue.

'Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie', originally written in 1966, but rewritten in 1991, is a riotous, Rabelaisian stew of a comedy concerning the demonic Charlie who is always trying to jump, with both feet, into his left trouser leg. While making a television programme about buskers, Michael Aylmer finds Charlie Ketchum in a lodging house, clutching a trumpet and stinking to high heaven. Intending to do a special programme on this uniquely virulent and garrulous character, Michael invites him to stay at his house. But when Charlie tries to resume his wandering life accompanied by a few household movables, Michael's wife Joan discovers to her cost that even after a bath and new trousers he is dangerous. The first act ends with his trial; the second act begins with his release from a psychiatric hospital.

Written in 1978, 'Cloud Nine' was first performed at Dartington College of Arts, Devon, on 14 February 1979. The two acts form a contrapuntal structure and the play uses controversial portrayals of sexuality and obscene language to establish a parallel between colonial and sexual oppression. Its humour depends on incongruity and the carnivalesque, and helps to convey Churchill's political message about accepting people who are different and not dominating them or forcing them into particular social roles.

First performed in Richmond in 1996, 'Clowns' is the sequel to 'Joyriders', reuniting its characters on the eve of the first IRA ceasefire, eight years after Maureen's death. It is a play about the moment between history and future, its characters trapped by the pain of the past but faintly hopeful about an end to the conflict which has defined their lives.
