This book explores how confessional poets in the 1950s and 1960s US responded to a Cold War political climate that used the threat of nuclear disaster and communist infiltration as affective tools for the management of public life. In an era that witnessed the state-sanctioned repression of civil liberties, poets such as Robert Lowell, John Berryman, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, and Randall Jarrell adopted what has often been considered a politically benign confessional style. Although confessional writers have been criticized for emphasizing private turmoil in an era of public crisis, examining their work in relation to the political and affective environment of the Cold War US demonstrates their unique ability to express dissent while averting surveillance. For these poets, writing the fear and anxiety of life in the bomb’s shadow was a form of poetic doublespeak that critiqued the impact of an affective Cold War politics without naming names. Adam Beardsworth is a professor of English at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus, Canada, where he teaches contemporary literature and critical theory. He is the author of numerous articles and chapters on US and Canadian poetry and is a past-president of the Canadian Association for American Studies. He lives in Steady Brook, Newfoundland.

The first section of the volume, “Theorizing Keats’s Reading,” contains four essays that identify major patterns in the poet’s reading habits and responses to other works. The next section, “Keats’s Reading,” consists of six essays that examine Keats’s work in relation to specific earlier authors and texts. The four essays in the third section, “Reading Keats,” consider how Keats’s poetry influenced the work of later writers and became embedded in British and American literary traditions. The final section of the book, “Contemporary Poetic Responses,” features three scholar-poets who, in poetry and/or prose commentary, discuss and exemplify Keats’s impact on their work. Beth Lau is Professor of English Emerita at California State University, Long Beach, USA. She has published numerous studies of Keats’s books, reading, and marginalia, including Keats’s Reading of the Romantic Poets (1991) and Keats’s Paradise Lost (1998). Her other research interests include Jane Austen and cognitive-evolutionary approaches to literature. Greg Kucich is Professor of English and Fellow of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame, USA. His publications include Keats, Shelley, and Romantic Spenserianism (Penn State UP 1991) and numerous books and articles on the Keats-Hunt Circle, Romantic-era drama, and Romantic-era women writers. Daniel Johnson is English; Digital Humanities; and Film, Television, and Theatre Librarian at the University of Notre Dame, USA. He has published articles on long eighteenth-century literature and digital humanities. He also co-edited (with Beth Lau and Greg Kucich) a digital edition of Keats’s annotated copy of Paradise Lost.

They are repeatedly interested in humans, spirits, and objects that move very fast; become airborne; and in some cases even travel into space. In Speed and Flight in Shakespeare, the first study of any kind on the subject, Steggle looks at how Shakespeare’s language explores ideas of speed and flight, and what theatrical resources his plays use to represent these states. Shakespeare has, this book argues, an aesthetic of speed and flight. Featuring chapters on The Comedy of Errors, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Henry V, Macbeth and The Tempest, this study opens up a new field around the ‘historical phenomenology’ of early modern speed. Matthew Steggle is Professor of English at the University of Bristol, UK. His research interests include early modern literature and drama, with a particular focus on "historicized performance studies", and "acoustic approaches" to early modern drama. His publications include four monographs on early modern drama; editions of plays by Shakespeare, Jonson, and Brome; and dozens of scholarly articles and book chapters. Steggle is also Co-editor of the AHRC-funded Oxford Works of John Marston project, and of the Lost Plays Database. .

Diese Open-Access-Publikation befasst sich mit dem Erzählen im Unternehmenskontext, was spätestens seit der Einführung des Storytelling in den 1999er-Jahren allgegenwärtig ist. Der Band zeigt in diesem Zusammenhang, wie Unternehmen das Erzählen explizit im Internet nutzen, um sich nach außen positiv darzustellen (= Imageförderung). In der Veröffentlichung wird deutlich, dass für die (Selbst)Darstellung bestimme Spezifika von Erzählungen von besonderer Bedeutung sind. Mit ihrer Hilfe können Unternehmen bspw. Konzepte – wie Corporate Responsibility – als gelebte Werte den Zielgruppen diskret veranschaulichen oder den Arbeitsalltag zu einem besonderen Erlebnis stilisieren. Insgesamt identifiziert die Autorin vier Grundtypen der (Selbst)Darstellung mit jeweils spezifisch narrativer Rhetorik sowie bezeichnende narrative Realisierungsformen, um diese Typen im WWW an die gewünschten Zielgruppen zu kommunizieren. Hierbei zeichnen sich die sprachwissenschaftlich analysierten Erkenntnisse durch ihre interdisziplinäre Einbettung aus. Dadurch eröffnen sich Anschlussmöglichkeiten zu anderen Fachdisziplinen. Die Autorin Nachdem sich Ulrike Ackermann 2021 in der Germanistischen Linguistik unter einer interdisziplinären Perspektive in dem Themenbereich ,Erzählen' an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg promovierte, wendet sie heute ihre anwendungsbezogenen linguistischen Erkenntnisse als selbständige Partnerin im Empfehlungsmarketing praktisch an.

In its engagement with video games, this book contributes to their study but with a thematic focus on a particularly important subject matter in American Studies: spatiality. The volume explores the production, representation, and experience of places in video games from the perspective of American Studies. Contributions critically interrogate the use of spatial myths ("wilderness," "frontier," or "city upon a hill"), explore games as digital borderlands and contact zones, and offer novel approaches to geographical literacy.
