The volume argues that speculative fictions and explorations of the fantastic provide a critical lens for studying the possibilities and limitations of paradigm shifts in society. Lars Schmeink and Ingo Cornils bring together essays that study the renaissance of German SF in the twenty-first century. The volume makes clear that German SF is both global and local—the genre is in balance between internationally dominant forms and adapting them to Germany’s reality as it relates to migration, the environment, and human rights. The essays explore a range of media (literature, cinema, television) and relevant political, philosophical, and cultural discourses. Lars Schmeink is Research Fellow at the Europa-Universität Flensburg, Germany. For 2022, he has received a Leverhulme Visiting Professorship at the University of Leeds, UK. He is a researcher in the FutureWork research project of the German Ministry of Education at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He is the founder of the Gesellschaft für Fantastikforschung and has served as president of the board from 2010 to 2019. He has published widely on science fiction, the fantastic, and popular culture, including The Routledge Companion to Cyberpunk Culture (co-editor, 2020); Cyberpunk and Visual Culture (co-editor, 2018); Biopunk Dystopias: Genetic Engineering, Society, and Science Fiction (2016), Collision of Realities (co-editor, 2012), and Fremde Welten (co-editor, 2012). Ingo Cornils is Professor of German Studies at the University of Leeds, UK. He has published widely on science fiction, edited two special issues of the academic journal literatur für leser on German language science fiction co-edited, with Ricarda Vidal, the volume Alternative Worlds: Blue-Sky Thinking since 1900 (2015), and authored of the monograph Beyond Tomorrow: German Science Fiction and Utopian Thought in the 20th and 21st Century (2020).

The French in Macao in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries: Literary, Cultural, and Historical Perspectives investigates the role that Macao played as a meeting place of the East and the West during this period of time and its decline as a Portuguese colony in the eyes of the Europeans. The book provides a comprehensive view of representations of Macao as portrayed by the French. These texts in French have been studied less than Chinese or Portuguese texts on Macao. Overall, the book contributes to the study of colonial history, cultural studies, and China in the late Qing dynasty. Jingzhen Xie holds a Ph.D. in French from Johns Hopkins University, USA and is Research Librarian at the University of Macau, China. Her main research areas include Macao studies, history of translation from French to Chinese, and the relationship of information to culture. She has published on historical studies and library and information science. She is a co-editor of Dictionnaire français-chinois 拉鲁斯法汉词典 (2014), the main co-editor of East Meets West: An Illustrated Catalogue of Some Rare Books in Western Languages in the University of Macau Library (2016), and a co-author of Transferring Information Literacy Practices (2019).

Writing Plague: Language and Violence from the Black Death to COVID-19 brings a holistic and comparative perspective to “plague writing” from the later Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. It argues that while the human “hardware” has changed enormously between the medieval past and the present the human “software” has remained remarkably similar across time. Through close readings of works by medieval writers like Guillaume de Machaut, Giovanni Boccaccio, and Geoffrey Chaucer in the fourteenth century, select plays by Shakespeare, and modern “plague” fiction and film, Alfred Thomas convincingly demonstrates psychological continuities between the Black Death and COVID-19. Thomas highlights the danger of scapegoating vulnerable minority groups such as Asian Americans and Jews in today’s America. This wide-ranging study will thus be of interest not only to medievalists but also to students of modernity as well as the general reader.

The book focuses on how increasing and ongoing isolation and concealment of slaughter from the surrounding society affects readings and depictions of slaughter and abattoirs in literature, and on the degree to which depictions of animals being slaughtered creates an avenue for empathic reactions in the reader or the opportunity for reflections on human-animal relations. Through chapters on abattoir fictions in relation to narrative empathy, anthropomorphism, urban spaces, rural spaces, human identities and horror fiction, Sune Borkfelt contributes to debates in literary animal studies, human-animal studies and beyond. Sune Borkfelt lectures at Aarhus University, Denmark. His publications include articles and book chapters on nonhuman otherness, postcolonial animals, the naming of nonhuman animals, and the ethics of animal product marketing. He is also co-author of a critical research-based Danish book on hunting.

This is the first book to view Shakespeare’s plays from the prospect of the premodern death arts, not only the ars moriendi tradition but also the plurality of cultural expressions of memento mori, funeral rituals, commemorative activities, and rhetorical techniques and strategies fundamental to the performance of the work of dying, death, and the dead. The volume is divided into two sections: first, critically nuanced examinations of Shakespeare’s corpus and then, second, of Hamlet exclusively as the ultimate proving ground of the death arts in practice. This book revitalizes discussion around key and enduring themes of mortality by reframing Shakespeare’s plays within a newly conceptualized historical category that posits a cultural divide—at once epistemological and phenomenological—between premodernity and the Enlightenment. William E. Engel is the Nick B. Williams Professor of Literature at The University of the South, in Sewanee, Tennessee, USA. He has published eight books on literary history and applied emblematics, including two critical anthologies coauthored with Rory Loughnane and Grant Williams, The Death Arts in Renaissance England (2022) and The Memory Arts in Renaissance England (2016); and has coedited several collections of essays including Memory and Mortality in Renaissance England (2022) and Memory and Forgetting in the Early Modern Era (2018). Grant Williams is an Associate Professor of English Literature at Carleton University, in Ottawa, Canada. With William E. Engel and Rory Loughnane, he has co-authored The Death Arts in Renaissance England (2022) and, with Donald Beecher, edited Henry Chettle’s Kind-Heart’s Dream and Piers Plainness: Two Pamphlets from the Elizabethan Book Trade (2021). He has also co-authored The Memory Arts in Renaissance England (2016) with Engel and Loughnane and co-edited three collections: Taking Exception to the Law (2015), Ars reminiscendi (2009), and Lethe’s Legacies (2004).

Canonical writers such as Walter Pater, E. M. Forster and Virginia Woolf are discussed alongside lesser-known figures such as John Addington Symonds, Vernon Lee and Arthur Symons. Engaging with a number of historical case studies, Fraser Riddell pays particular attention to the significance of embodiment in queer musical subcultures and draws on contemporary queer theory and phenomenology to show how writers associate music with shameful, masochistic and anti-humanist subject positions. Ultimately, this study reveals how literary texts at the fin de siècle invest music with queer agency: to challenge or refuse essentialist identities, to facilitate re-conceptions of embodied subjectivity, and to present alternative sensory experiences of space and time. With this book Meyer and Schwartz provide a first complete reading of their earliest, Warring States (453-221 BC), iteration as witnessed by the Anhui University manuscripts. As a thought experiment, the authors seek to establish an emic reading of these songs, which they contextualise in the larger framework of studies of the Shī (Songs) and of meaning production during the Warring States period more broadly. Emotionen und Wildtiere in Waldemar Bonsels Mario und die Tiere (1928) -- Humanimale Emotionen bei Otto Alscher -- Synthese und Konklusion. Anhand von Werken von Ludwig Ganghofer, Hermann Löns, Felix Salten, Waldemar Bonsels und Otto Alscher, die zwischen 1900 und 1943 erschienen sind und in denen die Jagd zentral ist, widmet sich dieser Band der Rolle und der Darstellung von Emotionen in den Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und Wildtieren. Dabei wird die Überschneidung neuerer Emotionsforschung mit den Cultural and Literary Animal Studies erprobt. Es wird gezeigt, dass Wildtiere zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts im Zeichen von Wandel standen. Manche Texte spiegeln eine Abschwächung des Anthropozentrismus. Wildtiere werden verstärkt in ihrer Bedrohung sowie als individuelle Persönlichkeiten mit eigenen Ausdrucksmitteln dargestellt. Ihre subtile Gefühlswelt stellt die Exklusivität des Menschlichen in Frage. Hingegen mischt sich Ambivalenz unter die Emotionen von Jägern und Jagd. Hervorgehoben wird diese Tendenz durch das Aufzeigen narrativer Perspektivverschiebung zu den Tieren, der Poetisierung von Emotionen sowie materiell-semiotischer Mensch-Tier-Verknüpfungen. Über den historischen Rahmen der Textauswahl hinaus sensibilisiert dieses Buch für eine weitläufigere Reflexion über die Prekarität von Wildtieren unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der ethischen Dimension von Emotionen. Der Autor Stefan Hecht ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter der Forschungsgruppe Mondes germaniques et nord-européens an der Universität Straßburg.

This book provides the first comprehensive cultural historical account of how British travellers understood the non-Muslim minority peoples they encountered in the Ottoman empire, and of how they perceived and described them in the mediating shadow of the Turks. In doing so it seeks to change our perceptions of the British encounter with the Ottomans by exploring the entangled identities of the Ottoman subjects in the English imagination, de-centering the image of the ‘Terrible Turk’ and Islam.

This book examines the influence of American poetry on Seamus Heaney’s achievement by close attention to the themes, style, and resonances of his poetry at different stages of his career, including his appointments in Berkeley and Harvard. Beginning with an examination of Heaney’s education at Queen’s University, this study presents comparative close readings which explore the influence of five American poets he read during this period: Robert Frost, John Crowe Ransom, Theodore Roethke, Robert Lowell, and Elizabeth Bishop. Laverty demonstrates how Heaney returned to several of these poets in response to difficulty and to consolidate later aesthetic developments. Heaney’s ambivalent critical treatment of Sylvia Plath is investigated, as is his partial misreading of Bishop, who is understood today more sensitively than in her lifetime. This study also probes the reasons for his elision of other prominent American writers, making this the first comprehensive assessment of American influence on Heaney’s poetry. Dr Christopher Laverty is an academic researcher based at Queen’s University, Belfast, where he completed his PhD in 2019. His work has been published in Twentieth-century Literature, Irish Studies Review, and Estudios Irlandeses. .
