Ein umfassender Essay von Marc Ries entwickelt einen theoretischen Rahmen der Beziehung des bewegten Bildes zum Begehren. Beiträge von Candice Breitz, Douglas Gordon, Johan Grimonprez, Jonas Mekas, Larissa Sansour, Igor Simic und Frederico Solmi.

Pain and Pleasure in Classical Times attempts to blaze a trail for the cross-disciplinary humanistic study of pain and pleasure, with literature scholars, historians and philosophers all setting out to understand how the Greeks and Romans experienced, managed and reasoned about the sensations and experiences they felt as painful or pleasurable. The book is intended to provoke discussion of a wide range of problems in the cultural history of antiquity. It addresses both the physicality of erôs and illness, and physiological and philosophical doctrines, especially hedonism and anti-hedonism in their various forms. Fine points of terminology (Greek is predictably rich in this area) receive careful attention. Authors in question run from Homer to (among others) the Hippocratics, Plato, Aristotle, Lucretius, Seneca, Plutarch, Galen and the Aristotle-commentator Alexander of Aphrodisias

    Orlando, Florida, may be one of the best places to discuss the subject of creation and re-creation of entertainment: the city lives under the shadow of Disney corporation, whose most celebrated re-creations are based on French texts from the 17th century French literature, and in particular Perrault’s fairy tales. From this perspective, whether we speak of ?reworks behind a prince’s castle, a morality tale to entertain children and parents alike, or even a theatrical representation that seems to appear from magic, the three hundred years that separate Orlando and Versailles seem to disappear: the parallels between the 17th and 21st centuries are founded on the same drive to enliven and enlighten one’s world.

    Disputes lie at the heart of the sagas. Consequently, literary texts have been treated as sources of legal practice – narrations of law – while the sagas themselves and the handling of legal matters by the figures adhere to ‘laws of narration’. The volume addresses this intricate relationship between literature and social practice from the perspective of historians as well as philologists. The contributions focus not only on disputes and their solution in saga literature, but also on the representation of law and its history in sagas and Latin historiography from Scandinavia as well as the representation of laws and norms in mythological texts. They demonstrate that narrations of law provide an indispensable insight into legal culture and its connection to a wider framework of social norms, adjusting the impression given by the laws. The philological approaches underline that the narrative texts also have an agenda of their own when it comes to their representation of law, providing a mirror of conduct, criticising inequity, reinforcing the political and juridical position of kings or negotiating norms in mythological texts.     Although we tend to suggest that clear constructions of identity are granted to religious symbols under the assumption that they distinguish between self and other explicitly, perceptions of alterity in fact play a vital role in sacral forms of representation. Markers of foreignness are used in a semantics of the exceptional that characterizes the sacral. Perceptions of difference are thus capable of making visible the remoteness of sacral forms from the profane world of experience. This book, therefore, asks: What role do traits of alterity play in the sacral context? How are various concepts of the sacred synthesized in situations of transcultural translation, for instance in the context of missionary activity? How did an artifact arrive at sacral potency in various cultures, and under what conditions did semantic shifts occur?

Vor dem Hintergrund der in diesen weltweit grten Webseiten für Hörlyrik abrufbaren Originallesungen zeigt das Buch, wie stark moderne Lyrik gerade in Deutschland von der US-amerikanischen Moderne geprägt wurde. Denn große Dichter dieser Moderne wie etwa Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Charles Olson oder John Ashbery entwickelten eine von Reim und Metrik befreite lyrische Form, die sich an Prosarhythmen, Alltagssprache oder Musikstilen wie Jazz orientierte, und deren Einfluss in Deutschland bis heute enorm ist. Um diese neuen lyrischen Ausdrucksformen nachvollziehbar zu machen, geht dieses Buch neue Wege. Es ist interaktiv, da man es beim Lesen auch hören kann. Wenn man mit der Kamera-App eines Smartphones den neben den diskutierten Gedichten platzierten QR-Code ausliest, lässt sich jedes Gedicht in einer Originallesung auch hören. Zudem stellt dieses Buch mit der free verse prosody eine bisher in Deutschland kaum bekannte Theorie vor, anhand derer sich freirhythmische Lyrik auch und vor allem in gelesener Form erstmals genauer verstehen lässt

Träume hingegen vermögen in Form von Fiktionen, Imaginationen und Inszenierungen ästhetische Erfahrungsräume für diese extremen körperlichen Übergänge zu eröffnen. In Träumen vom Lebensanfang und Lebensende werden das ohnehin Rätselhafte des Traums, seine Missachtung der physikalischen Gesetze von Zeit und Raum sowie die Infragestellung kultureller Modelle von Identität, Kohärenz und Rationalität noch potenziert. Literarisch-künstlerische Traumerzählungen und Traumbilder finden höchst originelle Ausdrucksformen, um das Abwesende, Unvorstellbare oder nicht realistisch Erzählbare zu vergegenwärtigen und zu vermitteln: Von der klassischen Antike bis in die Gegenwart hinein lassen sich unzählige Träume in Literatur, Kunst, Musik, Theater und Film ausmachen, bei denen die leibliche und sinnliche Erfahrung von den Grenzen des Lebens im Mittelpunkt steht.     This book concerns the soul/body problem in Plato and Aristotle. Established as well as early career scholars actually working on Plato and Aristotle explore - under different points of view as well as through original readings and interpretations - the manifold dimensions involved in the conception of the soul/body relation articulated by the two greatest founders of Western Thought. The book starts with an exploration of the relation between cause and matter in Plato and Aristotle, then some papers on Plato’s theory of soul and body are presented, which involve new advancements in the research about Platonic epistemology, moral and political theory, metaphysics of mind, even about his religious and ‘theological’ view. Some papers on Aristotle’s model follow, which are focused on his so-called “hylomorphism” as an alternative view to Plato’s alleged “dualism”: the ontology of the soul/body relation in Aristotle is explored, as well as the implications of this theoretical framework for his theory of knowledge, his moral theory, his cognitive psychology. Finally, two papers critically assess the philosophical connections between Aristotle’s hylomorphism and its modern and contemporary Wirkungsgeschichte.

This collection examines early modern women’s contribution to the culturally central mode of complaint. Complaint has largely been understood as male-authored, yet, as this collection shows, early modern women used complaint across a surprising variety of forms from the early-Tudor period to the late-seventeenth century. They were some of the mode’s first writers, most influential patrons, and most innovative contributors. Together, these new essays illuminate early modern women’s participation in one of the most powerful rhetorical modes in the English Renaissance, one which gave voice to political, religious and erotic protest and loss across a diverse range of texts. This volume interrogates new texts (closet drama, song, manuscript-based religious and political lyrics), new authors (Dorothy Shirley, Scots satirical writers, Hester Pulter, Mary Rowlandson), and new versions of complaint (biblical, satirical, legal, and vernacular). Its essays pay specific attention to politics, form, and transmission from complaint’s first circulation up to recent digital representations of its texts. Bringing together an international group of experts in early modern women’s writing and in complaint literature more broadly, this collection explores women’s role in the formation of the mode and in doing so reconfigures our understanding of complaint in Renaissance culture and thought. .

De ce point de vue, que ce soit un feu dartifice extraordinaire au détour dun château princier, une histoire moralisante à en régaler enfants comme parents, ou encore une représentation théâtrale qui ressort de la magie, les trois cents ans qui séparent Orlando de Versailles semblent être anéantis devant le même résultat : les parallèles entre les dix-septième et vingt-et-unième siècles se fondent dans la perspective égale damuser tout en instruisant son monde. Avec laide de notre comité éditorial, nous sommes fiers de présenter ici une collection darticle sur le thème : Créations, recréations, et Amusements au dix-septième siècle : pré-modernité et post-modernité.Orlando, Florida, may be one of the best places to discuss the subject of creation and re-creation of entertainment: the city lives under the shadow of Disney corporation, whose most celebrated re-creations are based on French texts from the 17th century French literature, and in particular Perraults fairy tales. From this perspective, whether we speak of fireworks behind a princes castle, a morality tale to entertain children and parents alike, or even a theatrical representation that seems to appear from magic, the three hundred years that separate Orlando and Versailles seem to disappear: the parallels between the 17th and 21st centuries are founded on the same drive to enliven and enlighten one's world.     Kafkas Literatur ist mit den Diskursen der Moderne in Sachen Organisation und Recht kontaminiert und führt doch über deren codiertes Wissen hinaus. Dass Kafka Jurist und genauer Kenner der industriellen Produktion, der Bürokratie und der Versicherungswirtschaft war, hat, wie besonders Stanley Corngold und Benno Wagner gezeigt haben, Spuren in seinem literarischen Werk hinterlassen. Der vorliegende Band untersucht die Korrespondenzen, die dieses Werk Kafkas zu jenen Diskursen unterhält. Die Beiträge zeigen, dass Kafka-Lektüren und der Blick auf sein Schreibverfahren zu verstörenden Einsichten in die Funktionsweisen von Organisation und Recht, von Gesetzen und Regeln, von Kommunikation und Herrschaft führen – und umgekehrt, dass avancierte Organisations- und Rechtstheorien das Verständnis der Literatur Kafkas erhellen. Dabei ist es nicht zuletzt die Differenz zwischen Kafkas literarischen Fiktionen und den Theoriefiktionen der Sozialwissenschaften, die in Frage steht.     Where do we end up when we enter the time machine that is the digital game? One axiomatic truth of historical research is that the past is the time-space that eludes human intervention. Every account made of the past is therefore only an approximation. But how is it that strolling through ancient Alexandria can feel so real in the virtual world? Claims of authenticity are prominent in discussions surrounding the digital games of our time. What is historical authenticity and does it even matter? When does authenticity or the lack thereof become political?     Der Band versammelt Beiträge, die anlässlich des 7. Seoul-Freiburger Rechtswissenschaftlichen Symposiums im September 2019 in Seoul gehalten wurden. Die Zusammenarbeit und der akademische Austausch zwischen den juristischen Fakultäten der Seoul National University (SNU) und der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg hat eine alte und wertvolle Tradition der engen Beziehungen zwischen dem koreanischen und dem deutschen Recht lebendig gehalten. Das 7. Symposium war dem Thema "Rechtstheorie und -auslegung in einer dynamischen Gesellschaft" gewidmet und deckte ein breites Spektrum an Themen ab, die in sechs Sektionen unterteilt waren: I. Rechtstheorie und -auslegung, II. Unternehmensrecht, III. Internationales Privatrecht und Zivilprozessrecht, IV. Recht der künstlichen Intelligenz, Eigentumsrecht und Strafrecht. V. Vertragsrecht, und VI. das Verhältnis von supranationalem und innerstaatlichem Verfassungsrecht. Die meisten der auf dem Symposium gehaltenen Vorträge sind in diesem Band versammelt. This volume is a collection of edited papers presented at the occasion of the 7th Seoul-Freiburg Law Faculties Symposium held in Seoul in September 2019. The 7th Symposium was devoted to “Legal Theory and Interpretation in a Dynamic Society” and covered a broad range of subjects divided in six sections on I. Legal Theory and Interpretation, II. Enterprise Law, III. International Private Law and Civil Procedure Law, IV. Artificial Intelligence Law, Property Law, Criminal Law. V. Contract Law, and VI. the Relation of Supranational and Domestic Constitutional Law. Most of the papers presented at the Symposium are collected in this volume.

    This volume explores the cultural significance of Brexit, situating it in debates about nation and identity. Contributors to this collection seek to contextualize Britain’s decision to leave the EU and to assess its reverberations in language, literature, and culture. Addressing such aspects as British exceptionalism, myth-making, medievalism, and nostalgia, contributions range from travelogues, Ladybird books, and rural cinema-going to ageing. An important focus lies on marginalized groups and geographical fringes, as contributors attend to the Irish situation and the scarcity of EU migrants in Brexit literature (BrexLit). Finally, two essays widen the perspective to assess American parallels to the discourses about a Brexit that is still far from “done.”

    "Make kin, not babies!", Donna Haraway demands in an attempt to offer new and creative ways of thinking what kinship might mean in an age of ecological devastation. At the same time, the emergence of a seemingly new culture of public protest and political opinion has provoked scholars such as Judith Butler to address the contexts and dynamics of public collective action. This volume explores the dynamic relationship between structures of kinship and the (material) conditions under which collective action emerges from a literary and cultural studies perspective. How are kinship and collective action negotiated in literature, the arts, or in specific historical moments, and how does this affect the role of representation? How have both concepts developed over time, and what can we infer from this for questions of kinship and collective action today?
