; www.transcript-verlag.de/978-3-89942-193-4/virus/

  2. A mystic quest in the sheltering country : an investigation into Paul Bowles's literary image of Morocco

Paul Bowles (1910-1999) was an American writer who restlessly travelled throughout the world until he finally chose Morocco as a country of permanent residence. He settled in Tangier from 1947 until his death in November 1999. Paul Bowles’s work as a whole includes writings set in the different countries he travelled to but the bulk of his literary production is essentially Moroccan in themes, characters and settings. This dissertation attempts to investigate Paul Bowles’s mystic quest in Morocco as a sheltering home and the reasons why this country retained him for a lifelong expatriation. It also demonstrates the impact Morocco exerted on the fulfilment of the writer’s quest in Morocco. In short, this study analyses the reasons why Morocco became the writer’s adopted and sheltering home and the extent to which it fulfilled his mystic quest. My study is a text based analysis involving Paul Bowles’s fiction, autobiographies, travel essays and interviews. This research has been conducted in the light of different methods, namely the comparative method of investigation, the psychoanalytical approaches of Jacques Lacan, Julia Kristeva and others when appropriate and of J.Olney’s and G.Gusdorf theories of autobiography. The comparative method of investigation analyses the different contextual influences that shape the expatriate’s image of Morocco and show the extent to which the writer was receptive to the different world cultural and movements, in addition to the author’s familial, American and Moroccan influential contexts. Bowles’s literary production as a whole includes writings set in the different countries where he resided for different periods of time. A significant element of my study is then the analysis of the autobiographical cohesion and centrality that subtend the writer’s work as a whole. This part is mostly conducted in the light of J.Olney’s and G. Gusdorf theories of Autobiography. The cohesion and centrality linking Paul Bowles’s life and work reveal the Moroccan specificities as well as the ...

The papers presented in this book originate from an international symposium, “Architecture as Cosmology: Lincoln Cathedral and Bishop Robert Grosseteste (1235–53),” hosted by Lincoln Cathedral on the 21st and 22nd January 2012, and funded by the Paul Mellon Education Programme and the Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of Lincoln. Supported by the Bishop and Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral, the symposium (and subsequent published work) constitute the culmination of a more extended research project begun by Nicholas Temple in 2003 and published in his Disclosing Horizons: Architecture, Perspective and Redemptive Space (Routledge, 2007), and further developed by John Hendrix in his two books, Robert Grosseteste: Philosophy of Intellect and Vision (Academia Verlag, 2010) and Architecture as Cosmology: Lincoln Cathedral and English Gothic Architecture (Peter Lang Publishing, 2011). The papers in this volume develop, or challenge, the arguments presented in these earlier publications and research projects, by examining relationships between the scientific and cosmological ideas of Robert Grosseteste and the design and symbolism of Lincoln Cathedral. The central area of contention, in the chapters of this edited volume, is whether the cathedral (famous for its rose windows and innovative Gothic design) actually influenced the cosmological theories of its bishop, in particular his highly original theories of light and geometry. Contributors to the volume include many eminent historians and architectural theorists (who also presented papers at the international symposium), such as Professor Cecilia Panti (authority on Grosseteste and Medieval optics, and Professor Dalibor Vesely (renowned architectural theorist and philosopher) and Professor Christian Frost (noted authority of Salisbury Cathedral).

This is the first book about the literature of the Irish in London. By examining over 30 novels, short stories and autobiographies set in London since the Second World War, London Irish Fictions investigates the complex psychological landscapes of belonging and cultural allegiance found in these unique and intensely personal perspectives on the Irish experience of migration. As well as bringing new research to bear on the work of established Irish writers such as Edna O’Brien, John McGahern, Emma Donoghue and Joseph O’Connor, this study reveals a fascinating and hitherto unexplored literature, diverse in form and content. By synthesising theories of narrative and diaspora into a new methodological approach to the study of migration, London Irish Fictions sheds new light on the ways in which migrant identities are negotiated, mediated and represented through literature. It also examines the specific role that the metropolis plays in literary portrayals of migrant experience as an arena for the performance of Irishness, as a catalyst in transformations of Irishness and as an intrinsic component of second-generation Irish identities. Furthermore, by analysing the central role of narrative in configuring migrant cultures and identities, it reassesses notions of exile, escape and return in Irish culture more generally. In this regard, it has particular relevance to current debates on migration and multiculturalism in both Britain and Ireland, especially in the wake of an emerging new phase of Irish migration in the post-‘Celtic Tiger’ era.

This thesis looks at a selection of novels by diasporic writers which engage significantly with the domestic sphere and its associated practices in their narratives of migration to Britain from postcolonial spaces. Employing a feminist postcolonial approach to works by Buchi Emecheta, Monica Ali, Andrea Levy, Abdulrazak Gurnah and Leila Aboulela, this thesis challenges dominant readings of migration fiction that have been shaped by postmodern and diasporic frameworks of displacement and rupture, emphasising instead placement, dwelling and (re)rooting as important features of the migratory process. It also aims to re-centre the domestic, private and ‘everyday’ in conceptions of home in current debates about migration, while also generating a productive theorisation of 'home' which synthesises its feminist and postcolonial critiques. My approach is about reading more than the allegorical into literary representations of home-spaces, as I trace the interdependence of public and private, domestic and political, across both form and content in the novels covered. Through my analysis of individual texts, I show how writers draw on the colonial and postcolonial politics of home and domesticity as discursive resources in their narratives of cross-cultural encounter, challenging the devaluation of the private sphere as a static, unproductive and uncreative space. I unpack how these texts engage with the domestic as a material space of inspiration, but also as a political space constructed by histories of colonialism and immigration, as well as by policy and academic scholarship, showing how they respond to and subvert these discourses. Through their engagement with familiar tropes of house and home, many of these works challenge representations of migrant women as passive recipients and reproducers of an externally defined ‘culture’. Instead, I argue, they offer alternative interior geographies which re-map both the British domestic space and that of the home-culture, reframing the home as an important carrier of meaning ...

This thesis examines how and why the revolutionary political and aesthetic theories articulated throughout Paris May’68, influenced the formal development and political struggles of British Political Theatre between 1968-1978. In particular, the thesis traces how the radical philosophy of the Situationniste Internationale (SI), put forward in their journal the Internationale Situationniste and two key texts which informed the événements: Raoul Vaneigem’s The Revolution of Everyday Life (1967) and Guy Debord’s The Society of the Spectacle (1967), structured the idiomatic formal articulations of often diverse and antagonistic post-’68 political performances. The thesis does not argue that political playwrights were always aware of these texts at source. However, it does suggest, that - as the British underground distributed Situationist-style ideas into the consciousness of the nation’s counter-culture - it is appropriate to speak of the appearance of a Situationist Logic within post-’68 political theatre. At other junctures the thesis includes theories which reflect or complement Situationist writings indirectly, philosophy I call ‘thinking-in-common’. The introductory Chapter outlines the dominant themes and events of Paris May ’68 and illustrates how the British counter culture assimilated or interpreted the événements. The Introduction also sets out the criteria for the theses’ selection of plays, dramatists, and critical terms of reference. It also explains the genealogy and theoretical relevance of the concept of homology; a mode of analysis that underpins the rhetorical strategies of the whole thesis. Chapter 1 ‘Anti-Oedipus’ makes a comparative analysis between Vaneigem’s ideas about madness and those of the British anti-psychiatrists, using the work of the latter to establish its particular Situationist logic. Chapter 2 directly asserts how the syndicalist politics of the SI were assimilated by the May’68 Occupation Movement and then taken up by political theatre workers. Chapter 3 ‘Sexuality’ primarily ...

This thesis is to study certain humorous phenomena in several literary works written in different languages. The humorous texts chosen for analysis in this thesis are: 1) Candide written by the French writer Voltaire, published for the first time in French in 1759; 2) The British Museum is Falling Down written by the English writer David Lodge, published for the first time in English in 1965; and 3) Fortress Besieged written by the Chinese writer Qian Zhongshu, published for the first time in Chinese in 1947. In these humorous texts, the comic heroes are all 'intellectual characters' sharing some common features. These characters are portrayed with an acute sense of humour and even bold self-mockery. Whether through the effect of joyful laughter or tearful laughter, these humorous texts tell the awkward but fascinating experiences of their heroes: their pursuit of higher-standard values and their final disappointment; their efforts and their failure; their disparagement as well as the beliefs they grudgingly hold in spite of their frustration. In each case, their intellectual adventures have influenced and indeed formed the contradictory personalities of these characters as presented in these humorous narratives.

Poverty and inequality have gained a new public presence in the United Kingdom. Literature, and particularly narrative literature, (re-)configures how people think, feel and behave in relation to poverty. This makes the analysis of poverty-themed fiction an important aspect in the new transdisciplinary field of poverty studies.
