    Le présent volume contient les Actes du colloque international sur les " Représentations et conceptions de l'espace dans la culture médiévale " qui s'est déroulé du 19 au 21 octobre 2009 sous les auspices de l'Institut d'Etudes Médiévales de l'Université de Fribourg (Suisse). La participation de spécialistes de rang international à cette rencontre atteste du vif intérêt que suscitent aujourd'hui dans la communauté scientifique la perception et la compréhension médiévales de l'espace. En effet, d'importantes études menées au cours de la dernière décennie auront éclairé sous un nouveau jour la signification complexe de l'espace dans la civilisation du Moyen Age latin, qui se décline sur plusieurs registres : social, économique, politique, culturel et religieux. Loin d'apaiser la curiosité scientifique, les études récentes sur ces diverses facettes de l'espace médiéval ont ouvert de nouveaux horizons, suscité des interrogations nouvelles, mis à jour un vaste chantier d'investigation sur les rapports aux lieux et à l'espace dans la vie et la culture du Moyen Age européen. Le colloque visait donc à explorer davantage quelques pistes de recherche. Il a réuni des chercheurs de pays, de langues, de cultures et de domaines scientifiques différents. Il a ainsi donné lieu à un dialogue animé qui aura permis de confronter et d'enrichir mutuellement les visions de l'espace médiéval des spécialistes de l'histoire, de la philosophie, de l'histoire de l'art et de la littérature This volume contains the records of the international Freiburg Colloquium of the same name which was held by the Medieval Institute of the University of Freiburg from October 19 to 21, 2009. The academic reconstruction of the conception and perception of space in the culture of the Latin Middle Ages requires a differentiated treatment and corresponding competencies - something which can be realized only through an interdisciplinary approach. Each contributor to this volume examines the given theme from the perspective of his or her own specialist field

    Studies in Syntactics. The purpose of this book is to explore the structure of the text as such using a metalanguage derived from quantitative poetics. Grigori Utgof’s thesis is that texts should be studied statistically. The main problems addressed in his research are the problem of successivity on the formal (syntactic) plane of artistic texts, and the problem of syntactic dissimilarity. Largely prompted by Yuri Tynianov’s famous statement – „The unity of the work is not a closed, symmetrical intactness, but an unfolding, dynamic integrity. Between its elements is not the static sign of equality and addition, but the dynamic sign of correlation and integration. The form of the literary work must be recognized as a dynamic phenomenon“ (The Problem of Verse Language; translated by Michael Sosa and Brent Harvey) – Grigori Utgof demonstrates the inherent nonidentity of the intratextual order, and proceeds to the problem of measuring some translated texts’ dissimilarities. In particular, his book is an inquiry into the structure of the following eight texts: Приглашение на казнь / Invitation to a Beheading by Vladimir Nabokov, and the novel’s Estonian translation Kutse tapalavale [Invitation to the Block] by Rein Saluri; “За гремучую доблесть грядущих веков...” by Osip Mandel’shtam, and two translations of this poem into English: “In the Name of the Higher Tribes of the Future” by Robert Lowell and “For the Sake of the Resonant Valor of Ages to Come…” by Vladimir Nabokov; “Облако в штанах” (“Cloud in Trousers”) by Vladimir Mayakovsky; “Ballada [Ballade]” by Czesław Miłosz in Natalya Gorbanevskaya’s translation (“Баллада”).

    n 1975 a group of Leningrad poets sought official permission to hold a memorial meeting commemorating the ninetieth anniversary of the birth of Nikolaj Stepanovič Gumilev (1886 -1921) the following year, as well as issuing a collection of their poetry. On April 16. 1976 the poet Oleg Oxapkin and the historian Vladimir Poreš initiated the first memorial meeting devoted to the founder of Acmeism. Since that time there have been three additional "unofficial conferences" held (1978, 1979 and 1980). At these yearly private meetings, literary historians, poets and poetry lovers converge and pay homage to Gumilev. The section containing material relating to Gumilev in this volume is significant and illuminating.

    Acta Slavica Estonica is an international series of publications on current issues of Russian and other Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. This issue of the subseries “Blokovskii sbornik” continues the series of studies started by Zara Mints in 1964. The majority of works from Section I of the book, “The Art of А. Blok in the Context of 19th–20th Century Literature,” is devoted to the study of the poet’s works, his perceptions of preceding writers’ works, and his biographical and artistic contacts with contemporaries. The articles in Section II, “Silver Age Literature: Creative and Social Strategies,” are mainly focused on artistic works and essays of modernist literati contemporary to Blok or to some extent resonating with his poetry and artistic worldview.

    Acta Slavica Estonica is an international series of publications on current issues of Russian and other Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. Another volume in the long tradition of Tartu Pushkin studies includes works by scholars from Estonia, Russia, USA, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. There are comments on individual texts as well as extensive historical and literary studies. A separate section is devoted to a study that demonstrates the possibilities of the statistical approach to the problems of attribution and dating of poetic texts.     "The Makura no Sôshi, or The Pillow Book as it is generally known in English, is a collection of personal reflections and anecdotes about life in the Japanese royal court composed around the turn of the eleventh century by a woman known as Sei Shônagon. Its opening section, which begins haru wa akebono, or "spring, dawn," is arguably the single most famous passage in Japanese literature. Throughout its long life, The Pillow Book has been translated countless times. It has captured the European imagination with its lyrical style, compelling images and the striking personal voice of its author. Worlding Sei Shônagon guides the reader through the remarkable translation history of The Pillow Book in the West, gathering almost fifty translations of the "spring, dawn" passage, which span one-hundred-and-thirty-five years and sixteen languages. Many of the translations are made readily available for the first time in this study. The versions collected in Worlding Sei Shônagon are an enlightening example of the many ways in which translations can differ from their source text, undermining the idea of translation as the straightforward transfer of meaning from one language to another, one culture to another. Silentiary's poems respectively describe the church and its (now lost) pulpit. The Descriptio S. Sophiae also contains a lavish praise of emperor Justinian and of the patriarch Eutichius. De Stefani’s edition is based on a collation of the witness of the text, Heid. Pal. gr. 23, and takes into account all previous bibliography. Some corrupted passages of the poems have been emendated, thefew false readings still present in the text printed by the last, authoritative editor, P. Friedländer (1912), have been corrected.
