It is the day of the Epsom Derby and Britain is gripped by racing fever. At Epsom Downs Racecourse, a magnificent cross-section of society gathers to watch the famous Derby race in which Lester Piggot rode 'The Minstrel' to a dramatic, photo-finish victory. Described by the Guardian as 'An exuberant documentary about a secular English Festival', 'Epsom Downs' was commissioned and first performed by Joint Stock theatre company at the Roundhouse, London, in 1977, directed by Max Stafford Clark.

Premiered at London's Royal Court Theatre in June 1973, 'Magnificence' has two plotlines. Firstly, five far-left revolutionaries squat in an unoccupied house in London, making a political statement about government housing policy before they are brutally evicted by police and bailiffs. Secondly, an ageing, homosexual Conservative cabinet MP loses faith in himself. The two plotlines converge in the final scene, where the revolutionary Jed threatens the MP with an explosive mask which fails to ignite. With an utterly helpless glance, Jed takes in the simultaneous vision of both the bomb gone wrong - the act gone wrong - and the face of his enemy - the system gone wrong.

A ferocious battle of wits and fists is the subject of 'Sore Throats', where recently divorced couple Judy and Jack face each other down in a hail of insult and violence over the acrimonious split of their assets. Into this turmoil enters a young woman, Sally, who is hoping to rent a room in Judy's new flat. But far from becoming a kitchen sink drama, this 1979 play develops in a style more redolent of the abstract terror of Pinter or indeed the later Sarah Kane's works. 'Sore Throats' was first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Warehouse Theatre, London, on 8 August 1979.

'The Churchill Play', in this revised version first performed by the RSC in 1978, examines the future England might have had, a world Brenton felt could come to pass after seeing the Conservative party rise to dominance in 1980s politics. The play's title is the name of a play within the play: a performance being put on by the internees in a British prison camp, named after Winston Churchill. These internees are victims of the fascistic future Brenton foresaw as the possible legacy of the Rightist ideologues of the late twentieth century.

First performed at London's National Theatre in July 1976, 'Weapons of Happiness' is a political play which contrasts east European experience with English innocence. Brenton pitches Josef Frank, a real-life Czech victim of Soviet despotism who was hanged in 1952, into the turbulent London of 1976. The ghostly Frank finds himself employed in a crisp factory whose naively bolshie young workers decide to stage an occupation. Their lack of any coherent plan of action, plus the combined opposition of management, the police and the unions, means their protest is doomed. The only hope lies in the workers' leader, Janice, who is sexually magnetised by Frank and seems to have inherited something of his original socialist idealism.
