    The object of this paper is to attempt a comparison between the perception of the big city by an author of German expressionism, Georg Heym, and the Brazilian modernist Mario de Andrade. The aim is to compare the poetic visions of two cities, Berlin and Sao Paulo, at the beginning of the twentieth century and highlight both, the coincidences and differences in the perception of urban life, based on the ideas of the German sociologist Georg Simmel on the life of man in modernity and the stimulations of nerve impulses.

    Novalis is perhaps the most expressive poet of German Early Romanticism. His ideas, mainly in form of fragments, were strongly based upon Fichte’s theory of magic idealism and are substantial part of his literary work, which presents a mixture of genres such as poetry, rhetoric, philosophical and religious themes and even social aspects. This article will introduce some of Novalis’ personal aspects with the intent of briefly introducing two of his main issues: the concept of Fragment, as exploited in ‘Die Lehrlinge zu Saï’s, and his ideal of a poetic, self referent language.

This article deals with the arisal and the first receptions of photography in the artistic sphere, considering the shock between painting x photography, the discussion about visible reality and its forms of representation in art.     Among the different functions that an autobiography might have is the claim for recognition. Some of the former members of the militant German Left from the Seventies have published autobiographical texts in the latest years. In the analysis of Inge Viett's book, the author raises the question of responsibility for her violent aiming at reaching her readers' recognition. Entre as diferentes funções que uma autobiografia pode assumir está a reivindicação de reconhecimento. Vários dos integrantes da esquerda militante alemã dos anos 1970, que romperam radicalmente com a sociedade, publicaram, nos últimos anos, textos autobiográficos. Na presente análise do livro de Inge Viett, a autora discute a questão da responsabilidade de seus atos violentos com o propósito de alcançar o reconhecimento de seus leitores. Zu den diversen Funktionen, die einer Autobiografie zufallen können, gehört das Streben nach Anerkennung. Einige der früheren Mitglieder der militanten deutschen Linken der 70er Jahre haben in den vergangenen Jahren autobiografische Texte veröffentlicht. Die folgende Analyse folgt der Fragestellung, auf welche Weise die Autorin ihre Verantwortung für die Gewaltakte und ihre Forderung nach Anerkennung formuliert

    This lecture deals with the development of the post-war radio drama in Germany. After a short introduction to the genre, we discuss three exemplary radio dramas: Günter Eich’s "Träume", NWDR 1951, typical for the literary radio drama, and "Träume 1951 - Musikalischer Epilog" by Hans Schüttler, NDR 2007, a small play which could be considered as representative of contemporary German audio art. The last example comes from a radio drama following the current pop culture trends. "Eisstadt" (WDR 2005, by Schorsch Kamerun), mixes high and low culture, different speeches and music styles and shows the same political ambitions present in the play "Träume". Recently, the German radio play has been going through a period of revitalization, even though under quite different conditions from those observed in the fifties. O artigo aborda a trajetória da peça radiofônica alemã do pós-guerra. Depois de uma introdução ao gênero da radiopeça, são comentados três peças exemplares: "Träume" de Günter Eich, NWDR 1951, como exemplo típico de uma radiopeça literária, e "Träume 1951 - Musikalischer Epilog" de Hans Schüttler, NDR, do ano 2007, uma obra representativa da Audio-Art contemporânea. O último exemplo é de uma radiopeça pop, "Eisstadt", WDR 2005, de Schorsch Kamerun. Eisstadt, uma bricolagem com a mesma pretensão política de "Träume", mistura a cultura erudita com a cultura de massa e combina os mais diversos estilos de língua e de música. Ultimamente, com a valorização do audio na Alemanha, a peça radiofônica está passando por uma fase de revitalização, porém sob condições diversas daquelas dos anos cinquenta.

    German media theory arises within the field of literary studies at the beginning of the eighties, and has been playing since then a major role in communication and media studies around the world. However, many literary scholars are unaware of the so called German "media turn", which produced important contributions for the contemporary debate on the issues concerning text, media, meaning, perception, and technology. This article presents a discussion of the aforementioned debate, focusing on authors such as Benjamin, Schmidt and Flusser. A teoria da mídia alemã surge no campo dos estudos literários no início dos anos oitenta e desempenha um papel vital no campo da comunicação e dos estudos de mídia mundo afora. Contudo, muitos pesquisadores dos estudos literários não parecem ter consciência do assim chamado "media turn" alemão, que produziu contribuições importantes para o debate contemporâneo acerca de questões sobre texto, mídia, percepção e tecnologia. Este artigo tenta mostrar um panorama desse debate, enfocando autores como Benjamin, Schmidt e Flusser.

    Since the mid 1980's, a paradigm change has taken place in Translation Studies: the primacy of the text to be translated gradually loses terrain to the reception conditions of the translated text. Such a change brought consequences to the concept of translation competence itself: translation students have to be able not only to show a good command of the languages involved, but also to activate other kinds of knowledge, in order to comprehend the text in the source language, and to design translation strategies which enable them to comply with the requirements of the translation task. The article argues that the systematic application of concepts taken from contrastive linguistics research (German/Portuguese), as well as from text linguistics, can help students to improve their knowledge of the foreign language and guide them in their first steps as translators. The theoretical considerations (Part I) are illustrated by an example taken from a translation course (Part II). A partir de meados da década de 1980, observa-se uma mudança de paradigma na pesquisa sobre tradução: a primazia reservada até então ao texto de partida cede lugar paulatinamente aos fatores que coatuam na recepção do texto traduzido. Tal mudança tem conseqüências para a noção de competência tradutória: dos tradutores iniciantes não se espera apenas que tenham bons conhecimentos das línguas com as quais trabalham, mas também que sejam capazes de, na fase de compreensão do texto a ser traduzido, ativarem outras formas de conhecimento e, na fase de retextualização, traçarem estratégias que lhes possibilitem preencher lacunas adequadas à tarefa de tradução. Este artigo visa a demonstrar que a aplicação sistemática de conceitos da pesquisa lingüística de base contrastiva para o par de línguas alemão-português, bem como de conceitos da lingüística textual, pode contribuir para que os tradutores iniciantes ampliem e aprofundem seus conhecimentos na língua estrangeira, ao mesmo tempo em que são orientados nos primeiros passos da tradução. As considerações teóricas sobre o tema (Parte I) são ilustradas por um exemplo de aplicação (Parte II). Seit Mitte der 80er Jahre hat sich ein Paradigmenwechsel in der Übersetzungsforschung vollzogen: Der bis dahin vorrangig behandelte Ausgangstext tritt nun in den Hintergrund, um den verschiedenen Faktoren Raum zu geben, die bei der Rezeption des übersetzten Textes eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Dieser Wechsel hat Folgen für den Begriff der Übersetzungskompetenz: von angehenden ÜbersetzerInnen wird nicht nur verlangt, dass sie über ausreichende Sprachkentnisse verfügen, sondern auch, dass sie bei der Rezeption des zu übersetzenden Textes andere Wissensbestände aktivieren und bei der Verfassung des Zieltextes Strategien entwickeln, die ihnen ermöglichen, Probleme, die ihnen aus mangelnden Sprachkenntnissen erwachsen, auftragsgemäß zu lösen. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, aufzuzeigen, dass die systematische Anwendung von Konzeptionen der kontrastiven Sprachforschung (Deutsch/Portugiesisch) sowie der Textlinguistik im Übersetzungsunterricht dazu beitragen kann, den Studenten sowohl bei der Erweiterung und Vertiefung ihrer Deutschkenntnisse, als auch im Anfangsstadium ihrer Übersetzerausbildung zu helfen. Die theoretischen Erwägungen (Teil I) werden durch ein exemplarisches Beispiel (Teil II) erläutert.

    This paper, written by an anthropologist, describes his fieldwork experience in the Afro-Brazilian temple Casa das Minas, São Luis do Maranhão, in 1981-1982, done with the German writer Hubert Fichte. Although correcting some statements in Fichte's book on the same subject and criticizing his indiscretion towards several of his informants, the article emphasizes the learning process with the German "ethnopoet": his skillful interview technique, the priority given to subjects of general interest, the importance of card files, the sought for beauty in the statements… As to the methodological differences between ethnography and ethnopoetry, the latter is free from the conventions of anthropological work, being able to concentrate on the beauty of the text and to conceive ethnography as a literary form. On the other hand, the advantages of ethnography, especially in Malinowski's tradition, are in the commitment with true facts and the precision of details. – See also, in this number of Pandaemonium Germanicum, Willi Bolle's complementary article on "Ethnopoetry and Ethnography". Dies ist der Erfahrungsbericht eines brasilianischen Anthropologen über seine Feldforschung in Zusammenarbeit mit dem deutschen Schriftsteller Hubert Fichte in der Casa das Minas, in São Luis do Maranhão, 1981-1982. Wenngleich einige Fehlinformationen Fichtes berichtigt sowie seine Indiskretion gegenüber Informanten kritisiert werden, stellt dieser Aufsatz die mit dem deutschen 'Ethnopoeten' gemachten Lernerfahrungen in den Vordergrund: seine Kunst des Interviews, die Priorität von Gegenständen allgemeinen Interesses, die Wichtigkeit der Karteikarten-Datei, die Suche nach Schönheit in den Aussagen... Was die methodologischen Unterschiede betrifft, so erweist sich die Ethnopoesie ab frei von den Konventionen anthropologischer Feldforschung und kann sich damit auf die ästhetischen Qualitäten des Textes, auf die literarische Form konzentrieren.     People who learn Portuguese usually have difficulties in using two of the most frequent verbs of the Portuguese verbal system: ser and estar. Native speakers of German for example fail to easily identify the differences between these verbs, which are compared with the German verb sein. Our purpose is to describe these verbs, their meaning and function, and also to attempt to find criteria to help learners to identify the differences to use these verbs. Some of the differences can be explained by the speakers experiences and the context. Lerner des Portugiesischen als Fremdsprache haben oft Schwierigkeiten, die zwei häufig gebrauchten Verben des portugiesischen Verbalsystems ser und estar zu verwenden. Deutschsprachige erkennen kaum die Unterschiede zwischen diesen Verben, die im Deutschen oft mit dem Verb sein gleichgesetzt werden, das auch in ähnlichen Strukturen und Situationen vorkommt. In dieser Arbeit beschäftigen wir uns damit, diese Verben in ihrer Funktion und Bedeutung zu beschreiben und versuchen, Kriterien aufzustellen, die dem Lernenden helfen können, diese Unterschiede besser zu verstehen und dadurch die Verben besser anzuwenden. Einige Unterschiede können durch die Erfahrungen des Sprechers und durch den Kontext erklärt werden.

    For the learners of Portuguese and German as foreign languages the subjunctive mood represents a learning problem. Based on syntactic and pragmatic categories, the subjunctive is classified in a way that describes its use and permits the comparison between the Portuguese subjuntivo and the German Konjunktiv. Für Lernende des Portugiesischen bzw. des Deutschen als Fremdsprache stellt der Konjunktiv eine Lernschwierigkeit dar. Ausgehend von syntaktischen und pragmatischen Kategorien wird hier versucht, eine Klassifikation des Konjunktivs durchzuführen, die seinen Gebrauch beschreibt und einen Vergleich des portugiesischen subjuntivo mit dem deutschen Konjunktiv ermöglicht.

    This essay aimes to introduce the German-Jewish Poet Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) to the literary public of Brasil, where she has not been translated and is therefore nearly unknown. Proceeding from the translation of 12 paradigmatic poems, the crucial periods of her life, poetry and poetology are outlined: As her famous college Paul Celan, she was born in Czernovitch this multicultural town of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. An important number of her poems are the result of the intimate relation with her country. The early death of her father and the resulting poverty led her to try to find a new home in New York, but she came back in the period of beginning National Socialism and suffered the persecution of Holocaust. After long years of travelling, she settled down in a Düsseldorf home for elderly Jewish people. The central themes in her poetry are: the loss of country, the Holocaust, and survival in a kind of spiritual country, that is: language and writing. Der vorliegende Aufsatz verfolgt das Ziel, die (hierzulande weitgehend unbekannte, weil unübersetzte) deutsch-jüdische Dichterin Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) dem literaturinteressierten Publikum Brasiliens vorzustellen. Ausgehend von der Übersetzung von zwölf paradigmatischen Gedichten werden die entscheidenden Lebensstationen und Schaffensphasen der Dichterin, die wie Paul Celan im vielsprachigen Czernowitz der österreichisch-ungarischen Donaumonarchie aufwuchs, charakterisiert: Ihre tiefe Verbundenheit mit ihrer galizischen Heimat, ihr früher, vom Tod des Vaters und darauf folgender bitterer Armut erzwungener Versuch, in New York Fuß zu fassen; Rückkehr und Verfolgung in der NS-Zeit; ihre Reisejahre durch Europa auf der Suche nach neuen Wurzeln und schließlich – gezeichnet von Krankheit – ihre letzte Station im jüdischen Altenheim in Düsseldorf. Als zentrale Themen ihres vielfältigen Werks, das in Deutschland in acht Bänden zur Verfugung steht, dürfen gelten: Heimatverlust und -erinnerung, der Holocaust, das Leben in einer geistigen Heimat, dem "Mutterland Sprache".

Zentrale Punkte sind die Begriffe der Autonomie, des Erhabenen sowie L’art pour l’art als Paradigmen innerhalb der Diskussion über Beginn und Entwicklung der künstlerischen und sozialen Moderne. This article analyses the influence of Kant on conceptions and definitions of modern literature and art in publications by Lyotard, Kothe, Weber and Luhmann. It is argued that central issues in these publications, such as artistic autonomy, the sublime and the concept of L’art pour l’art, are adopted directly from Kant’s philosophical work and still serve as paradigms in the discussion of origin and status of modern social structure and its art production.

    Der Artikel unternimmt eine "interessierte" Interpretation der "Kritik der Urteilskraft". Interessiert, weil – gegen die dominante Tendenz der letzten Jahrzehnte – versucht wird, den Kantischen Begriff der freien Schönheit von der vorweggenommenen Verteidigung der abstrakten Kunst abzutrennen. Interessiert auch, weil – anstatt von Neuem den Aufbau der "KdU" nachzuzeichnen – gezeigt werden soll, dass die dritte Kritik etwas fundieren kann, was nicht so beabsichtigt war: eine Überprüfung der Mimesis. Hierzu ist das Verständnis des Kantischen Erhabenen entscheidend: ursprünglich eine Modalität der ästhetischen Erfahrung zu seinem Gegenstück, der Schönheit, entfernt sich das Erhabene in steigendem Maße von der letzteren. Wenn Schönheit und Erhabenes außerhalb des "bestimmenden Urteils" thematisiert werden, wo sich die Eigenschaften des Objekts dem Subjekt aufdrängen, setzen die Modalitäten der Erfahrung im Gegenteil den Primat des Subjekts voraus, sich steigernd von der durch die Schönheit vermittelten Erfahrung der Harmonie bis zur Erfahrung der negativen Lust am Erhabenen. Zwischen diesen Polen arbeitet das Subjekt die Realität durch. Am Pol der Schönheit spielt die "Vorstellung" der Realität noch eine herausragende Rolle. In der "negativen Lust" am Erhabenen ordnet sich die "Vorstellung" der Gewalt der "Darstellung" unter. Aber die zwei Arten der Erfahrung – des Schönen und des Erhabenen – gehören demselben Feld ästhetischer Erfahrung an, denn in beiden arbeitet das Subjekt das von außen Herantretende durch, anstatt es zu verwerfen. Mit anderen Worten, "Vorstellung" ist immer zu verstehen als eine Erfahrung, in der das Äußere vom Subjekt transformiert wird. D. h., die "Vorstellung" in der dritten Kritik ist immer eine wirkende Vorstellung. Sowohl im Erhabenen als auch in der "freien Schönheit", erreicht die vom Subjekt bewirkte Metamorphose des Äußeren ihre höchste Intensität, ohne dass der äußere Pol – was wir gewöhnlich die "Welt" oder "Realität" nennen – verschwände. Es ist daher nötig, den Begriff der Mimesis neu zu formulieren, um sich die Metamorphose der Welt klarzumachen, die durch die Radikalisierung der ästhetischen Erfahrung mittels der "freien Schönheit" bewirkt wird. This paper is an "interested" reading of "The Critique of Judgement" – "interested", because, unlike what has become usual in recent decades, it strives to disassociate the Kantian concept of "free beauty" from any interpretation of it as an early defense of abstract art. It is also "interested" because, instead of exposing (once more) the framework of the "Kritik der Urteilskraft", it tries to show how the Third Kantian Critique can be taken as a basis for something that was not part of its original purpose: reviewing the idea of mimesis itself. For that, the understanding of the Kantian sublime (das Erhabene) will be decisive: understood initially as one of the modalities of aesthetic experience, the other being beauty, the sublime progressively distances itself from the latter. If beauty and the sublime are to be thematized independently of "determining judgement", in which the properties of the object impose themselves upon the subject, the modalities of aesthetic experience suppose, on the contrary, the primacy of the subject. This implies gradations: from the experience of harmony propitiated by beauty up through the "negative pleasure" of the sublime, both poles through which reality is reworked by the subject. At the pole of beauty, "representation" of reality still plays a prominent role. At the pole of the "negative pleasure" of the sublime, "representation" is subordinated to the power of "presentation". However, both kinds of experience, the one of beauty and the other of the sublime, belong to the same field of aesthetic experience, because in both of them the subject reworks – does not discard – what comes to him from the outside: it will be necessary to understand "Vorstellung" always as an experience in which the exterior will be transformed by the subject. That is, the representation of the Third Critic will always be an effectual representation. In the sublime as much as in "free beauty", the metamophosis of the exterior by the subject achieves its maximum level without meaning that the external pole – that we usually call "world" or "reality" – disappears. It will thus be necessary to rethink the concept of mimesis in order to understand the metamorphosis of the world performed by radicalization of the aesthetic experience through "free beauty".
