    Plädoyer für eine "moderne Mediävistik", "Rechtfertigung" der Relevanz von mittelalterlicher Geschichte, Selbstreflexion der Geschichtswissenschaft oder gar Bestandsaufnahme des gesamten Faches - was will und was kann der anzuzeigende Band sein? Der Autor selbst, Lehrstuhlinhaber für mittelalterliche Geschichte an der Universität Hamburg, schraubt die Ansprüche bewußt herunter, wenn er den Band nicht als Forschungsbericht verstanden wissen will, wenn "keinerlei Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit oder Allgemeingültigkeit" [...] erhoben wird (wer könnte solches leisten?). Die inhaltliche, methodische und institutionelle Situation der derzeitigen mediävistischen Geschichtswissenschaft wird zwar nicht in allen ihren Facetten, wohl aber exemplarisch in ihren wichtigsten Richtungen und Strukturen dargestellt.

    In this Paper, the idea of "ethnopoetics" is seen not exclusively as the characteristic trait of Hubert Fichte's (1935-1986) work, but as one among several forms of New Ethnology, which appeared in the context of the crisis of traditional ethnology in the 20th century. The first part intends to conceptually clarify several issues introduced by Fichte, such as the transformation of the world into words, the connection between fieldwork and interpretation, the "participant observation", and the encounter between hegemonic and peripheral cultures, comparing them with the ethnographical essays of Lévi-Strauss, Malinowski, Evans-Pritchard and Ruth Benedict. The second part is devoted to Fichte's posthumous book "Explosion", published in 1993 – where he relates his experience of three journeys in Brazil, between 1969 and 1982, a text which may be considered as his working journal and guide to all his publications on Brazil. I discuss how far the author realized his proposals to write a "novel of ethnology" and to create a "new ethnology". Der Begriff der "Ethnopoesie" wird hier nicht ausschließlich als Merkmal des Werkes von Hubert Fichte (1935-1986) verstanden, sondern als eine unter verschiedenen Ausdrucksformen der "neuen Ethnologie", die im Zusammenhang mit der Krise der Ethnologie im 20. Jahrhundert entstand. Im ersten Teil dieses Beitrags geht es darum, von Fichte aufgeworfene Fragen wie die "Verwörterung der Welt", das Verhältnis von Feldforschung und Interpretation, die "teilnehmende Beobachtung" und die Begegnung von hegemonialen und peripheren Kulturen im Vergleich mit den ethnographischen Arbeiten von Lévi-Strauss, Malinowski, Evans-Pritchard und Ruth Benedict begrifflich zu erhellen. Im zweiten Teil wird die Frage erörtert, inwieweit Fichte in seinem posthum veröffentlichten Buch "Explosion" (1993), in dem die Erfahrungen seiner zwischen 1969 und 1982 unternommenen Brasilienreisen ihren Niederschlag fanden und das als Arbeitsjournal und Leitfaden für seine Publikationen über Brasilien gelten kann, seinen Anspruch eines "Romans der Ethnologie" bzw. einer "neuen Ethnologie" verwirklicht hat.

    This essay shows how Goethe and Johann Gottlieb Fichte converge in a common supranational cultural ideal, in spite of their divergences in relation to their poetic and scientific approaches. Goethe's idea of style as the supreme principle of art and Fichte's philosophical conception, which emphasizes philosophical activity as the art of thinking independently, constitute the thematic focus of the present article which also tries to make the point of coincidence of art and science evident. Este ensaio pretende mostrar como Goethe e Johann Gottlieb Fichte convergem num ideal cultural supranacional comum, apesar de suas divergências no que diz respeito a seus enfoques poéticos e cientificos. A idéia de Goethe acerca do estilo como supremo princípio da arte e a concepção filosófica de Fichte, que enfatiza o fazer filosófico como me de pensar por conta propria, constituem o foco temático central do presente artigo, tentando evidenciar, ao mesmo tempo, o ponto de coincidência de arte e ciencia.

    This article shows how the genre Bildungsroman (self-development novel) has been assimilated to the Brazilian literary tradition. Through the examples of Cristina Ferreira Pinto's "O 'Bildungsroman' feminino" ("The female novel of development") and Eduardo de Assis Duarte's "Jorge Amado e o 'Bildungsroman' proletário" ("Jorge Amado and the proletarian novel of development"), this article focuses the dynamic process by means of which a typical European genre has been assimilated by a young South-American literary tradition. Der vorliegende Artikel zeigt, wie die Gattung Bildungsroman von der literarischen Tradition Brasiliens assimiliert wird. Anhand des Buches "O 'Bildungsroman' feminino" von Cristina Ferreira Pinto und des Aufsatzes "Jorge Amado e o 'Bildungsroman' proletário" von Eduardo de Assis Duarte wird der Prozeß nachvollzogen, durch den ein typisch europäisches Textgenre durch eine junge südamerikanische Literaturtradition aufgenommen wird.

    The novel "Ana em Veneza" (1994) by João Silvério Trevisan is composed as a literary game of intertextual references to the works of Thomas Mann. Especially his tales "Enttäuschung" ("Desillusion") and "Tod in Venedig" ("Death in Venice") and his novel "Doktor Faustus" serve as models. Trevisan uses figures, motives and themes of Thomas Mann on various levels of his own literary creation, thus using elements in the works of the German writer as pattern of a "European" attitude towards art, about which he argues through his characters, seeking a specific Brazilian identity as an artist. The article surveys this productive reception of motives from Thomas Mann's works, refering to the basic ideas of the novel. O romance "Ana em Veneza" (1994), de João Silverio Trevisan, é construído como um jogo literário de referências intertextuais à obra de Thomas Mann. Serviram de modelo, sobretudo, os contos "Enttäuschung" ("Desilusão") e "Tod in Venedig" ("Morte em Veneza") e o romance "Doktor Faustus" ("Doutor Fausto"). Trevisan utiliza personagens, motivos e temas de Thomas Mann em vários níveis de sua própria criaqão literária e os toma como padrão de uma noção "européia" de arte, cuja essência é discutida através das personagens, em busca de uma identidade artística especificamente brasileira. O artigo faz uma análise crítica desta recepção produtiva de motivos mannianos, referindo-se às idéias básicas do romance.

    Alienation and strangeness could be understood as markers of cultural paradigms. The first term is related to modernity as the second is to postmodernity. One stands for identity, the other for alterity. While the existence of the phenomenon of alienation becomes disputable, the discourse of strangeness becomes intensified in the European academic sphere. In a way, the discourse of strangeness is labeled by a cultural critic, which tries to justify "strange" for centuries dispelled by the European culture. Meanwhile, a phenomenology of alienation is developed to re-structure the term. Both phenomena are connected insofar as alienation can be understood as a temporary moment of strangeness. ... Entfremdung (alienação) e Fremdheit (estranheza) podem ser entendidos como demarcadores de paradigmas culturais. A primeira está para a modernidade, assim como a segunda está para a pós-modernidade. Uma está para identidade, e a outra para alteridade. Enquanto a existência do fenômeno da alienação tornou-se questionável na atualidade, o discurso sobre estranheza vem se consolidando no âmbito acadêmico europeu. Tal discurso é, em certa medida, marcado por uma crítica cultural que tenta fazer justiça ao "estranho" recalcado por séculos pela cultura europeia. Enquanto isso, uma fenomenologia da alienação começa também a se desenvolver, a fim de reformular o conceito. Os dois fenômenos relacionam-se na medida em que a alienação é entendida como um momento transitório da estranheza. ...

    It might sound odd to work with the theme of absence, a theme which has occupied the minds of anthropologists, artists, and semioticians for a long time. So we present a brief conceptualization of absence and a short panorama of German movie after 1989, to show how film and literature have developed similarly in the same period. The main goal of this analysis is to detect structures of absence in German films after the German reunification. To illustrate the representation of absence, we propose an analysis of film stills. We rely mainly on the theories and concepts of Lehmann/Weibel, of the German philosopher Bernhard Waldenfels, as well as those of Gilles Deleuze and Michel Chion. Parece estranho à primeira vista tratarmos do tema da ausência, tão caro à antropologia, à semiótica e às artes. Para tanto, procederemos inicialmente a uma breve conceituação do termo, para depois passarmos a um curto panorama da produção cinematográfica dos últimos 20 anos na Alemanha, que geralmente acompanha tendências semelhantes na literatura. Verificaremos em que medida podem ser detectados elementos de ausência no cinema pós-muro na Alemanha. Em seguida, procederemos a uma análise de planos fílmicos de três filmes nos quais se evidencia a questão da ausência. Para este trabalho, utilizaremos como base teórica considerações de Lehmann/Weibel, Bernhard Waldenfels, Gilles Deleuze e Michel Chion. Es erscheint auf den ersten Blick kurios, das Thema der Abwesenheit zu behandeln, ein Thema, das der Semiotik, der Anthropologie und der Kunst schon lange vertraut ist. Hierzu gehen wir eingangs kurz auf eine Begriffseingrenzung ein, um dann ein zusammenfassendes Panorama der Filmproduktion der letzten 20 Jahre in Deutschland zu kommentieren, die größtenteils die Entwicklungen in der literarischen Produktion desselben Zeitraums begleitet. Im folgenden wird untersucht, inwiefern Strukturen der Abwesenheit im Postwendefilm in Deutschland festzustellen sind. Anschließend werden Filmeinstellungen von drei Filmen untersucht, in denen sich die Repräsentation von Abwesenheit verdeutlicht. Als theoretische Grundlage dienen uns Ausführungen von Lehmann/Weibel, Bernhard Waldenfels, Gilles Deleuze und Michel Chion.

    Mais do que um princípio formal, a noção de ensaísmo de Robert Musil adquire o duplo estatuto de uma "utopia" e de uma atitude diante da realidade. É esse duplo viés que permitirá à arte preservar-se como potência crítica e epistemológica num contexto de crise cultural e de valores na Europa no início do XX. Este artigo aborda a noção de ensaísmo de Musil a partir de seus textos críticos e de seu romance "O homem sem qualidades", demonstrando como as idéias expostas no registro estritamente "ensaístico" se configuram no âmbito da representação poética, consumando assim a "utopia" pretendida pelo autor, de fundar novas relações entre as esferas da razão e do sentimento, da ciência e da arte, da objetividade e da subjetividade. Robert Musil's essayism concept is more than a formal principle: in his work this concept becomes at the same time a "utopia" and an attitude towards reality. This double aspect allows the art to preserve its critical and episthemological power in a European crisis context at the beginning of the 20th century. This paper deals with Musil's essayism in his critical essays and in his novel, "Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften", pointing out how the essayistic ideas are outlined in the poetical representation, showing how one of the aspects of Musils "utopia" takes effect through the foundation of a new relation between reason and feeling, science and art, objectivity and subjectivity. Bei Robert Musil gilt der Begriff des Essayismus nicht nur als formales Prinzip, sondern auch und vielmehr als eine "Utopie" und eine Haltung gegenüber der Wirklichkeit. Dieser doppelte Ansatz des Essayismus erlaubt der Kunst, ihre kritische und ephystemologische Macht zu bewahren gerade in diesem Krisen-Kontext Europas zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Dieser Aufsatz behandelt den Essayismus-Begriff Musils von seinen kritischen Texten und seinem Roman "Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften" ausgehend, um zu zeigen, wie sich die in Essays entwickelten Ideen im Bereich der Dichtung gestalten. Durch diese Gestaltung wird eines der Aspekte der Musilschen Utopie verwirklicht, nämlich, die Begründung neuer Beziehungen zwischen Ratio und Seele, Wissenschaft und Kunst, Objektivität und Subjektivität.

Herein, this study investigates the theoretical dialogue that implicitly or explicitly permeates Goethe's thought and the work of the philosopher of Königsberg involving concepts such as Art, Nature and the Sublime. Este ensaio aborda afinidades entre Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) e Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), principalmente em relação à "Crítica da Faculdade do juízo" kantiana. Investiga-se assim o diálogo teórico que implícita ou explicitamente permeia o texto goethiano e a obra do filósofo de Königsberg envolvendo temas, tais como Arte, Natureza e Sublime.

    The University of Aachen harbored for years the main centre of Studies on Imagology of Germany and perhaps of the world. The Center was founded by Hugo Dyserinck, who, in 1966, with the article "Zum Problem der 'images' und 'mirages' und ihrer Untersuchung im Rahmen der vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft" opened the doors to a new Imagology. He gathered there disciples, who roamed the new horizons with extensive research, which led to the publication of the collection "Aachener Beiträge zur Komparatistik". ... A Universidade de Aachen abrigou durante anos o principal centro de Estudos Imagológicos da Alemanha e talvez do mundo. O centro foi fundado por Hugo Dyserinck, que, em 1966, com o artigo "Zum Problem der 'images' und 'mirages' und ihrer Untersuchung im Rahmen der vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft" abriu as portas para uma nova Imagologia. Ali reuniu discípulos, que desbravaram os novos horizontes com inúmeras pesquisas, que deram origem à publicação da coleção "Aachener Beiträge zur Komparatistik". ...

    João Guimarães Rosa was strongly influenced by the German literature, philosophy and music. The German tradition and its methods of associations suggested him to develop his own methodologies from the substrates provided by traditional Brazilian songs. This paper shows the general effects of musical techniques in short-stories of "Sagarana", the influence of Heidegger´s philosophy and the use of the concept of Wagner´s 'Grundmotiv' in "O burrinho pedrês" and "Sarapalha". Finally, it is proposed some connections between "A hora e vez de Augusto Matraga" (ROSA) and "Parsifal", by Wagner. A proximidade entre música, filosofia e literatura na tradição alemã e seus métodos de aproveitamento dessas relações marcou profundamente João Guimarães Rosa, possibilitandolhe desenvolver trilhas próprias a partir dos substratos oferecidos pelas cantigas tradicionais brasileiras. Os efeitos gerais das técnicas musicais em "Sagarana", a influência de conceitos da filosofia de Heidegger, a utilização do 'Grundmotiv' wagneriano em "O burrinho pedrês" e "Sarapalha" e as semelhanças entre a narrativa "A hora e vez de Augusto Matraga" e a opera "Parsifal", de Wagner, constituem o objeto desta reflexão. Die Nähe zwischen Musik, Philosophie und Literatur in der deutschen Tradition und in ihren Methoden faszinierte João Guimarães Rosa zutiefst. Aus dem deutschen Beispiel heraus entwickelte er seine Methodenlehre der Organisation der brasilianischen traditionellen Lieder. Dieser Artikel diskutiert die allgemeine Wirkung der musikalischen Schreibtechniken in ausgewählten Kurzgeschichten aus dem Band "Sagarana": In "O burrinho pedrês" und "Sarapalha" wird der Einfluss von Heideggers Philosophie diskutiert bei gleichzeitiger Berücksichtigung vom Wagnerischen Konzept des 'Grundmotiven': In "A hora e a vez de Augusto Matraga" werden die Beziehungen zu Wagners "Parsifal" analysiert.

    The study "Two poems of Friedrich Hölderlin" is Walter Benjamin's first major critical work. Regarding this essay, the interpreters have been so far concerned with Benjamin's more general thesis and influences, without taking further acknowledgement of the heterodox twists active on his exegetical strategies. But, beyond the veil of the essay's methodological principles, it is possible to recognize the roots of a modern approach to Hölderlin's poetics, where the classical idealistic motives are replaced with a more sensual and materialist reading. Such turn would respond to the presence of early intuitions that eventually will become significant critical axes in Benjamin's thought. El estudio "Zwei Gedichte von Friedrich Hölderlin" es el primer ensayo crítico de Walter Benjamin. Respecto de dicho ensayo, los intérpretes se han concentrado en sus tesis e influencias más generales, sin reconocer por otro lado ciertos giros heterodoxos presentes en su lectura de Hölderlin. Así, tras el velo de sus postulados crítico-metodológicos, es possible reconocer un abordaje moderno de la poética hölderliniana, donde los motivos filosóficoidealistas aparecen desplazados por una lectura sensual y materialista. Dicho giro obedece a la presencia de intuiciones que más tarde constituirán los ejes fundamentales del pensamiento benjaminiano.
