This book studies the complex relations between time and visual technologies in the oeuvre of Thomas Pynchon within the general framework of the culture and politics of time. It argues that notwithstanding a postmodern tendency towards the spatialization of experience, temporality constitutes a major concern in Pynchon’s novels, which explore the problematic of time-experience and temporal representation against the background of the contemporary technosphere and its temporal regimes. By examining photography, cinema, television, computers, and the Internet, this book puts Pynchon’s engagement with visual technologies into a perspective that elucidates their workings as time machines in relation to both experientiality and materiality Thomas Pynchon—Criticism and interpretation – Temporal Imagination and Luddite Horology – Photo-Time(s) – Cinema and Time in Pynchon’s Theater of War – Video Technologies and Televisual Temporality – 24/7, Digitization and Network Time – Perception – Speed and Vision Machines

In the second decade of the twenty-first century, crime fiction remains one of the most popular genres among both readers and writers. This compilation of essays attempts to trace the reasons behind this ongoing popularity as well as to offer a closer reading of a number of crime fiction texts from English, American, Swedish, Italian, Japanese and other national literatures. It contains twenty-one original essays written by scholars and practitioners of crime fiction which discuss key concepts in the field of crime fiction studies: generic diversity, the evolution of characters, the growing significance of space and place and reader response. This book includes a short story by David Malcom

This book focuses on G. K. Chesterton's apology for Catholicism in the context of his epoch. It shows how he portrays Catholicism as English and universal at the same time and thus seeks to put an end to its isolation from England's mainstream culture. Organized around four thematic issues (transcendence, mystical materialism, valuation of the childlike, and universality), the book illustrates Chesterton's case for Catholicism as a case for romance and adventure, and as a challenge to modern modes of thought inimical to Catholic Christianity

This collection of essays explores poetry’s contribution to the expression of theological wonder, which can occur both in ordinary life and in the natural world or can arise in the context of explicitly supernatural mystical experience. Poets have a special role in capturing religious awe in ways beyond the power of discursive language. Some essays in this book approach the subject on a theoretical level, working with theology, philosophy and literary criticism. Others provide close readings of poems in which the engagement with a variously understood idea or experience of wonder is prominent, from the English-language tradition and outside it. Poets from culturally and historically different backgrounds are thus drawn together through the focus on the meaning of wonder.

This book explores the amorphous, fragmented and digressive world of George Gordon Byron’s poetic works, which are pervaded by the themes of change, mutability, deformation and transgression, often presented or described as madness. The blurring of the border between fiction and reality is a matter of the author’s decisions concerning both his life and his texts, and a conscious process of construction and self-fashioning. It is also a recurring epistemological theme in Byron’s works, which make take the form of narrative dis-orientation and the dismantling of easy cultural pre-conceptions. The Authors study Byron’s artistic quixotism and his pursuit of creative freedom which reveals itself in the Romantic irony, digressiveness and self-awareness of his writings.

The author analyzes the multi-layered and multidimensional theme of identity construction recurring in Tony Harrison’s work from the seventies onwards looking at the way it evolved throughout the years. The book examines identity in the frame of the sociological and philosophical thoughts of such thinkers as Emmanuel Levinas and Zygmunt Bauman and in reference to the systematization proposed by Zbigniew Bokszański: identity as a state or process, identity as a continuity or change, and identity as a consequence of conformity or revolt.

The book demonstrates the thematic unity underlying Angela Carter's fiction and non-fiction. The author analyzes their interdependence and demonstrates how Carter's texts persistently examine existing theories of pleasure from many different angles. In this way, Carter’s works enter into dialogue with numerous pleasure connoisseurs, theorists as well as writers. The author determines the notion of ‘pleasure’ is both the key to accounting for the heterogeneity of Carter’s output, as well as the common denominator of all her diverse fascinations. This is an issue that remains unaccounted for in criticism to date.

When, in 1948, Tony Harrison entered Leeds Grammar School as a scholarship boy, he found himself, as Richard Hoggart saw, “at the friction point of two cultures”. His schooling introduced him to the “classics”; but it also deprived him of a clear identification with the place where he grew up. His work reflects and explores this tension; and it may be seen, in some ways, as a form of “identity construction.”The book examines key texts such as v. and the School of Eloquence sequence, where this “construction” takes different forms—oscillating between identity as a state, or a process; as continuity, or change; or as the outcome of conformity, or revolt. This second edition has been extensively revised and includes a new chapter on Harrison’s Elegies.

This book offers new close readings of contemporary Irish drama in the context of postcolonial Biblical studies. Developing Christopher Morash’s historiographical metaphor of Babel, it combines appropriations of this and other selected Biblical themes of building found in plays by such authors as Malachy McKenna (Tillsonburg), Dermot Bolger (Ballymun Trilogy), Stacey Gregg (Shibboleth), Richard Dormer (Drum Belly) or Sebastian Barry (Tales of Ballycumber). The monograph explores the stances contributed by key scholars specialising in Irish drama and theatre (Christopher Morash, Shaun Richards, Helen Heusner Lojek), draws on the most recent findings within postcolonial Biblical criticism and touches upon the assumptions of subcreation studies (Mark J. P. Wolf).

This study is an analysis of the novels Black Water (1992), Blonde (2000), and My Sister, My Love (2008) by Joyce Carol Oates. Based on real-life characters (Mary Jo Kopechne, Marilyn Monroe, JonBenét Ramsey), these works blend fact and fiction, historical and poetic truth, and create a new way to recount facts that allow the writer to give a new voice to people who cannot speak for themselves anymore. The present book addresses the stories behind the novels, their genre and stylistic features, but is also an exploration of several aspects of American culture and society and their issues connected to consumerism, the cult of beauty and celebrity, and how they affect American women’s lives and power relations with men.

This volume comprises a collection of essays by Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Belarussian, and American scholars in the fields of American Studies, literary history, art history, and political science. It is focused on the topic of experience as a concept related to the United States and analyses US history, literature, film, art, politics, and society. The essays deal with a wide range of problems and types of representation, from experience as a component of various theoretical discourses through the experience of foreign visitors and recent immigrants for whom America has often been a place of the Other. The volume once again proves that experience has been one of the key categories of American cultural self-understanding.
