    "While the it-narrative, the thing-poem and thing theatre have been around for some time, the essay - which is often considered literature's fourth genre - is still lacking its thing-subgenre. Yet, particularly British and Anglo-Irish literature display a long, albeit so far implicit tradition of texts that can be categorised as 'thing-essays': Starting with Jonathan Swift's "Meditation upon a Broomstick" (1701) and continuing until today, these texts draw broader insights from the contemplation of a material item of daily life. This book provides the first theoretical conceptualisation of this genre. Bringing elements from essay studies and the New Materialisms together, it shows why the essay lends itself particularly well to literarisations of the personal relationships that people foster to everyday objects. While the idiosyncrasies of each essay show the versatility of thing-essays, the study also seeks to unearth changing attitudes towards things - and thus towards people's material surroundings in general - throughout time. In order to account for such synchronic and diachronic differences in thing-essays, this study develops a typology of three modes via which things can be approached essayistically. In the book's second part, this framework will be employed in close readings and historicisations of 14 thing-essays from 1701 until 2021. Ranging from satire to sentimental writing, from religion to consumerism, from class to gender differences, from feelings of nationality to exoticism, from the French Revolution to Freud and from art to everyday life, the stylistic and thematic broadness of these thing-essays ultimately shows the multifarious connections between human life and materiality"--

    Clubs und subkulturelle Freiräume prägen Berlin seit Jahrzehnten und machen die Stadt zu einem Sehnsuchtsort für Menschen aus aller Welt. Legendär sind zum Beispiel die Treffpunkte des Punk- und New-Wave-Untergrunds der 1980er Jahre oder die Technoclubs aus den 1990ern. Die Party- und Konzertlocations sind dabei oftmals auch Zeugen der bewegten Geschichte der Stadt, erzählen vom Kalten Krieg oder dem Fall der Berliner Mauer. Dieses Buch ist ihnen gewidmet, darunter berühmte Diskotheken, geheime Treffpunkte der DDR-Opposition und subkulturelle Abenteuerspielplätze verschiedenster Couleur. Viele dieser Orte existieren heute nicht mehr oder haben eine ungewisse Zukunft. Sie berichten von einem Berlin, das es nicht mehr gibt, und davon, wie stark die Club- und Subkultur von Verdrängung betroffen ist. „Fetz und Schreiber geben seit fünf Jahren bereits den Kalender „Places Berlin“ heraus – aus dem Kalenderprojekt entstand schließlich die Idee für das Buch. Die klaren, kontrastreichen Schwarz-Weiß-Illustrationen von Tine Fetz basieren auf Fotos und sind mit Liebe zum Sujet gezeichnet, so entdeckt man gelegentlich kleine ins Bild gesetzte Details oder Figuren, die eine eigene kleine Geschichte erzählen. Schreibers Texte sind dicht und informativ, aufs Wesentliche beschränkt, zum Glück nicht allzu nostalgisch. Und doch ruft „Places“ natürlich legendäre Konzerte in Erinnerung, bei der Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle etwa denkt man unweigerlich an die Konzerte kurz vor der Maueröffnung wie das Ton-Steine-Scherben-Konzert 1988 oder den Auftritt von Depeche Mode im gleichen Jahr“ (taz) Clubs and subcultural spaces have shaped Berlin for decades and made the city a place of longing for people from all over the world. The hangouts of the punk and new wave underground of the 1980s or the techno clubs of the 1990s, for example, are legendary. At the same time, the party and concert venues often bear witness to the city’s turbulent history and tell stories of the Cold War or the fall of the Berlin Wall. This book is dedicated to these places, among them famous discos, secret meeting places of the GDR opposition, and subcultural adventure playgrounds of various stripes. Many of them no longer exist or have an uncertain future. They tell about a city, that once was, and show how strongly club and subculture is affected by displacement.

    This paper takes a financial market perspective in examining the relationship between oil prices, the US dollar and asset prices, and it exploits the heteroskedasticity for the identification of causality in a multifactor model. It finds a bidirectional causality between the US dollar and oil prices since the early 2000s. Moreover, both oil prices and the US dollar are significantly affected by changes in equity market returns and risk. By contrast, oil prices did not react to changes in these financial assets before 2001. The paper provides evidence that this may be explained by the increased use of oil as a financial asset over the past decade, which intensified the link between oil and other assets. The model can account well for the strong and rising negative correlation between oil prices and the US dollar since the early 2000s, with risk shocks and the financialisation process of oil prices explaining most of the strengthening of this correlation.

    ger: Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Eigenschaften von Englisch als Lingua Franca (ELF) in online Gemeinschaften und Chatrooms von Computerspielern. ELF findet in einer Vielzahl von Situationen im Internet Gebrauch, einschließlich synchroner Chatrooms. Diese Chatrooms werden von Personen europa- und weltweit genutzt, um miteinander zu kommunizieren. Diejenigen, die Videospiele spielen, nutzen Chatrooms um miteinander zu spielen, miteinander zu interagieren und schlussendlich virtuelle Gemeinschaften, sogenannte Communities of Practice, aufzubauen. Das Internet ist ein neues Medium, dessen Effekte auf den Sprachgebrauch noch nicht vollständig untersucht sind. Zusammen mit dem Umstand, dass in diesen Gemeinschaften Englisch als Lingua Franca verwendet wird, stellt sich die Frage nach den Eigenschaften des Sprachgebrauchs in einer solchen kommunikativen Situation.Diese Untersuchung gibt einen Überblick über die lexikogrammatischen Eigenschaften von ELF, die in einer Gemeinschaft von Computerspierlern aus ganz Europa beobachtet werden können. Es wird gezeigt, dass die User des Chatrooms lexikalisch kreativ sind und die Grenzen der Englischen Sprache ausloten. Die Gründe dafür sind die Verminderung von redundanten Ausdrücken, sprachliche Regularisierung und eine effiziente Ausdrucksweise. Ihr Ziel ist es, verstanden zu werden und nicht, perfektes Englisch zu gebrauchen. Ferner versuchen sie anhand ihres Sprachgebrauchs Zugehörigkeit zur Gemeinschaft ausdrücken.Um dies zu demonstrieren, wurden in dieser Diplomarbeit Nachrichten aus einem synchronen Chatroom untersucht, der etabliert wurde um das Spiel League of Legends zu diskutieren und gemeinsam zu spielen. Die Ergebnisse belegen, dass bisher nachgewiesene lexikogrammatische Eigenschaften von ELF im Sprachgebrauch dieser Gemeinschaft vorhanden sind. Überdies vereinen die Teilnehmer ELF Eigenschaften mit Konventionen der Videospielsprache und erschaffen damit eine einzigartige Form der Kommunikation. eng: This thesis deals with the features of English as a lingua franca (ELF) in online gaming communities and chatrooms. ELF is employed in a variety of Internet situations, including synchronous chatrooms. These chatrooms are used by people all over Europe and the world to communicate with each other. Among them, the people who play video games use chatrooms to play games together, interact with each other, and build virtual communities, so-called Communities of Practice. The Internet is a new medium, and its effects on language use are still being examined. Combined with the fact that English is used as a lingua franca in these communities, the question arises what the most salient features of language use in such a communicative situation are. This study gives an insight into which lexico-grammatical features of ELF can be observed within a community of video gamers from all over Europe. In general, it is shown that the users of chatrooms are lexically creative and bend the boundaries of the English language. They do so for reasons of redundancy reduction, regularization and economy of expression. Their aim is to be communicatively successful rather than to adhere to standard English. Furthermore, they strife to signal belonging to their virtual community through their language use. In this thesis, messages from a chatroom that has been established to discuss and play the game League of Legends together are examined. The findings show that attested lexico-grammatical ELF features are present in the language use of this community. Moreover, the participants combine ELF features and conventions of online and gaming-specific language, creating a unique form of communication.
