    eng: The study 'Variations on Art' - Aldous Huxley's reflections on the Visual Arts' explores Huxley's relationship with the visual arts painting, sculpture, architecture - as reflected in the works of the more than 40 years of his literary career (1919 until early 1960s).
    Examples from all literary genres in which the author worked - except poetry - have been considered. As Huxley's art essays - on individual artists as well as on general aspects of art - constitute the main bulk of his writings on art, they form the basis for this study. Moreover, they reflect Huxley's views on the visual arts most clearly. They cover all periods in the history of art from Early Renaissance to the beginning of the twentieth century. The most important essays on individual artists are dedicated to Piero della Francesca, Pieter Bruegel, El Greco, Goya, Toulouse-Lautrec, Alberti and Sir Christopher Wren. It has been attempted to see Huxley's essays in relation to the place they occupy in art criticism and the history of art. The study also aims at discovering whether Huxley had any consistent philosophy of art and extracts the main ideas of this philosophy (good art versus bad art, sincerity and truth in art, form and content in a work of art, implicit and explicit meaning in an art work). A further point of investigation is in how far Huxley's aesthetic principles in and his response to the visual arts changed during his life. While in his early years he examined art for its intellectual and aesthetic value, during his later years he almost exclusively stressed its spiritual and religious value. Finally, the role of the artist and the visual arts in six of Huxley's novels is discussed. Possible models for his painter characters have been found out. Two chapters deal with Huxley's views on modern art (second half of nineteenth and first three decades of twentieth century) and on the art of landscape painting respectively.
