Considering different cultural practices characterised by illusionism, this book suggests a new approach to illusion via media theory.

     

    Each of the chapters analyses a specific kind of illusionistic practice and the concept of illusionism it entails in a given context, including philosophy, perception and cognitive theory, performance magic, occultism, optics, physiology, early cinema, cartomancy, spiritualism, architecture, shamanic rituals, and theoretical physics, to show the diversity of shapes that illusionism and illusions can take. The book provides detailed analyses of illusions within performance and ritual magic, philosophy, art history and psychology as well as a first approach to the study of illusions outside of these established fields. It aims to find ways of identifying and analysing a wider range of illusions in the humanities.

     

    This multidisciplinary and comprehensive volume will appeal to scholars and students with an interest in media and culture, theatre and performance, philosophy, sociology, politics and religion."

The mere thought of its main character Freddy Krueger still sends shivers down the spines of many viewers – and brings a grin to the faces of die-hard slasher fans. Katharina Rein subjects this undisputed genre classic to an intensive reading in which she traces the central moments of the disturbance. Using selected sequences from the film, she uncovers the workings of disruption in the horror genre. Contrary to widespread perceptions, she understands them, following Michel Serres, not as obstructive but as productive. The chapters collected here investigate diverse aspects and shapes of magic to uncover its manifold material and immaterial appearances in past and present cultures. While offering a broad overview, this book also provides close readings and in-depth specialist example analyses. By tracing magic's strong interrelation with colonial discourses, politics, economy, and the arts, it further reveals magic's role as going beyond that of an explanatory belief system or a form of entertainment. Magic is also a political act, a means of empowerment and protest, an economic metaphor, an instrument of oppression and liberation alike.
