This volume highlights the importance of imagology, one of the most popular areas of research in contemporary comparative studies. It proposes new means of academic analysis to create critical attitudes towards the development of imagological studies. The topics discussed draw a wide trajectory, from classical to marginal images, from national heroes to (un)conventional aspects of gender, from ethno-imagology to the broader dimension of intercultural references and epistemological post-poststructuralist changes. The compendium widens the field of imagology by introducing concepts such as "geo-imagology" and "imagology of gender", and by linking the imagological strategy with the power principle developed by post-colonialism and with the fictional project of an imaginary utopian society. The essays selected include case studies focusing on the works of individual authors, as well as broader insights concentrating on regional, national and transnational identities that experienced a change of imagery due to historical, political and social shifts. The book pays particular attention to the aspects of mobile imagery, the emergence of peripheral identities related to gender, class, ethnicity or race, and the detection and assessment of well-established stereotypes. The scope of the topics discussed and the variety of periods covered imply the universal nature and versatile applicability of literary imagology. Intro -- Table of Contents -- Introduction -- Focus I: Theoretical Principles, Terms, and Definitions -- Imagology as Image Geology -- Wider Image -- Focus II: From National Imagination to Utopia -- Enlightenment Culture and Others -- Development of the National Hero in Latvian Literature -- Nation and Utopia -- How a Lithuanian Transformed a Nazi into a Jew -- Focus III: Transgressing Real and Imaginary Boundaries -- The Self-image of the Latvians and the Image of the Lithuanians in the Book Leišmal te by Imants and Rimants Ziedonis -- Scottish Traces in the Lithuanian Landscape -- Some Remarks on the Estonian War Novel -- Multicultural Imagery in Andrei Ivanov s "Scandinavian Trilogy" -- Focus IV: Gender Identity as an Imagological Resource -- From Boys to Men -- Towards a New Self-image for Women in China -- Focus V: The Stability and Changeability of National (Stereo)types -- The Image of Uncivilized Lithuania in the Correspondence of Representatives of the Holy See -- The Literary Image of the Pole in the Republic of Lithuania (1918-1940) -- Discovering Distant Neighbours -- Cultural Stereotypes of Vilnius in the Modern Poetry of Lithuanian Poles -- Contributors -- Index of Names.

This collection of essays is multidisciplinary and wide-ranging. The authors, literary and theatre specialists, scientists from various fields, and a psychiatrist, present Shakespeare's works from very different perspectives, highlighting a new outlook on the current ways of tackling Shakespeare. Teachers of English all over Europe will find this book an eclectic tool which allows them to present Shakespeare in a challengingly vibrant way. To explore Shakespeare's plays, the authors deploy a range of filters such as nutrition, plant sciences, geography, art history, costume design, music, comics and street art. They show how the Bard can still be relevant to our lives in the 21st century. This book is the first to examine the influence of Shakespeare--particularly Hamlet--on D. H. Lawrence. Using the Bloomian theory of the "anxiety of influence" to probe the startling depths of Lawrence's agon with his towering precursor Shakespeare, it closely examines Lawrence's crypto-Jewish identity, as well as that of many of his highly individual characters, who embody the characteristics of Old Testament figures, and in so doing infuse a patriarchal strength and divine "religious" sublimity into civilized life. Lawrence's claims about the self-sacrificing influence of Christianity on Shakespeare's Hamlet, on the other hand, demonstrate how this influence carries over into the submission of the subject and the decline of Western Civilization. The book extrapolates this decline into a critique of the modern-day left-wing ideology that appropriates the self-abnegating individual to its collectivist ends.In responding agonistically to Shakespeare's Hamlet, Lawrence claims a far more complete, vital, and salubrious "consciousness" and a Weltanschauung that makes for greater, more fulfilling "life" thanks to the inner strength, psychic and sexual power of the Lawrentian "Self Supreme."The book will appeal to Lawrence and Shakespeare scholars and enthusiasts who wish to appreciate Lawrence and Shakespeare as supremely profound writers and thinkers. Its unique demonstration of Bloomian literary theory makes it come poignantly alive for both graduate students and college professors. Intro -- Contents -- Chapter One -- Chapter Two -- Chapter Three -- Chapter Four -- Chapter Five -- Chapter Six.

With his powerful thought image of the constellation, Walter Benjamin provides a method for the core practices of the Humanities: reading, writing, and thinking. This collection of provocative essays demonstrates how thinking in constellations with Walter Benjamin leads us towards a new understanding of the critical task of the Humanities today: it goes beyond disciplinary boundaries and challenges assumptions of linearity, coherence, and progression inherent in our scholarly praxis. The volume brings some of the most articulate young voices in international Benjamin scholarship together, and takes an interdisciplinary approach, covering wide-ranging fields of knowledge - quantum physics, postcolonial studies, natural philosophy, psychoanalysis, film theory, literature, and the arts. Benjamin's texts are re-considered in light of thinkers and poets, such as Theodor W. Adorno, Sigmund Freud, Gottfried E. Leibniz, W. G. Sebald, Franz Kafka, or Carlos Martínez Rivas. The critical potential of constellations in Benjamin's work and beyond will be of the highest interest for researchers and students in all areas of the Humanities. Américo Paredes distinguished himself as a journalist, novelist, short story writer, poet, folklorist, and as Professor of English and Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin. Admired as one of the inspiring founders of Mexican American Studies in colleges and universities across the United States, Paredes' life-long interest in Mexican-American history and culture motivated him during his early years to collect corridos from farmers and villagers living on the Lower Rio Grande, resulting in his pioneering book "With His Pistol in His Hand": A Border Ballad and Its Hero (1958), and in other books on folklore, poetry, and narrative fiction. Border Folk Balladeers: Critical Studies on Américo Paredes is a book of significant value to scholars, teachers, students, and to the general reader interested in the history and culture of Mexicans and Mexican Americans born on both sides of the Mexico-US border. It contains a full-length introduction and eleven essays written exclusively for this volume by scholars in the fields of folklore, literary criticism, and critical race theory, and who are renowned authorities on the work of Américo Paredes. Grouped into three sections, this book includes studies on theories of the Texas Modern; the Latin American critical tradition; border writing in world literatures; ethnography in minority communities; an analysis of Texas-Mexican border jokelore; and, among other critical studies, a comprehensive probe into the international drug traffic in the Mexico-US border, with an emphasis on narcoballads and narconovels, the contemporary offshoots of the Texas-Mexican border corrido. Intro -- Table of Contents -- Introduction -- Part One: Border Theory and the Legacy of Américo Paredes -- Américo Paredes, Walter Prescott Webb, and the Antinomies of Theory -- Américo Paredes and the Latin American Critical Tradition -- Américo Paredes and the Work of Border Writing -- Some Examples of Cultural Vindication and Integration in the Works of El Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Américo Paredes -- Américo Paredes: Remembering the Man and His Legacy -- Part Two: Borders, Bridges, and Conflicted Identities -- Transitionality: The Border as Barrier and Bridge -- Reworking Américo Paredes' Notion of 'Greater Mexico' -- The Politics of Ethnography -- Part Three: Border Narratives, Jokelore, and Corridos -- Uncle Remus con Chile -- Globalized Afterlives of the Border Corrido and the Corrido Hero -- Contested Citizenship -- Contributors.

Neighbourly relations frequently position a "self" against an "Other". This is the case for both individuals and nations, and, indeed, within the various cultural groups of a nation. Our racial, ethnic, social, or gender identities are often created in demarcating ourselves by stereotyping the Other. Disrespect of the immediate neighbour based on stereotypical pre-conceptions and cultural biases may lie dormant for a long time and then, as shown in recent conflicts around the globe, suddenly surface due to changed economic and political conditions.Media, including films and fictional as well as non-fictional texts, feature prominently in producing, propagating, and maintaining cultural difference and stereotypes in ideologically effective ways. This volume analyses re-presentations from various angles, as it comprises articles dealing with ethnic groups and neighbo(u)rhoods from three world areas, as well as genres and media instrumental to their respective cultural stereotyping. This focus on literary and media representations of the neighbo(u)rly Other from miscellaneous cultural environments results in a comprehensive understanding of analogies and differences in the mechanisms of production and perception of stereotypes. Addressing the manifold discourses at the heart of stereotyping the familiar Other, the book also points to their far-reaching repercussions on lived cultural practices. This study of Byron's last complete long poem, the comparatively neglected The Island, is the first to devote a whole book to the examination, contextualization and motivation of both the poetry and its poet. It is much more than just a monograph, however; aside from biographical considerations, it illumines aspects of study that embrace feminism, racial politics and social considerations in relation to Polynesian island society, all of which are contrasted with the loose anarchy of an eighteenth century group of British mutineers. Two historical contexts - the infamous 1789 mutiny on the Bounty and Byron's life in the year that led up to the poem's composition - serve as an extended prelude to a deep analysis of the major symbols and characters in the poem, while its main chapters range beyond The Island, conducting a literary conversation with Shakespeare, Pope, 18th-century writers of memoirs and nautical sea history, classical authors and even Chinese poets, as well as other Romantic poets. Consideration is given to aspects of racial and feminist theory in relation to the poem's extraordinary central female character; in particular there is a focus on her promotion of the poem's happy ending, one that is quite unique in Byron's oeuvre. The Appendix contains the first-ever published transcript of the holograph of the poem, allowing readers to appreciate Byron's idiosyncratic and expressive punctuation--as well as his first thoughts before editing. The idea of "diaspora" is an everyday concept for many people around the world who have left their homeland voluntarily or by force with the hope of making a new home in another place. In recent years, academics have used this term to reference conflating categories such as immigrants, ethnic and racial minorities, and refugees. This book examines the concepts of diaspora in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah (2013). Americanah tells the story of a smart young girl named Ifemelu who leaves Nigeria for America in search of higher education. In America, she faces several problems before graduating from college. This book investigates Americanah through diasporic concepts such as self and Otherness, acculturation, cultural diversity, hybridity, ambivalence and mimicry, unbelonging and return. George Eliot (1819-1880) is known for her psychoanalysis of the majority of her characters in her literary works. In her second novel, The Mill on the Floss (1860), she focuses on the fictional minds' subjective first thoughts and intentions. She shows how their unsympathetic workings cause private and collective tragedy by the end of narrative. The novel has frequently been acclaimed by critics and readers alike. However, this book presents a re-evaluation of the text with the help of terminologies borrowed from cognitive narratology in order to shed new light on the significance of one-track minds in this narrative. The book explores the mental functioning of the individual fictional minds, and examines how different modes of mental activities influence the interpersonal relationships between and among the characters. Accordingly, the study argues that the main cause of tragedy in The Mill on the Floss stems from at least two factors. First, the central fictional minds primarily function on the basis of their self-centered thoughts and emotions, over which they usually do not have control. Second, the tragedy is an effect of the social minds' or public opinion's unforgetting, unforgiving, and unsympathetic perspectives of any unconventional behavior. This book closes a gap in postcolonial theory through its scrutiny of how four Indian and Nigerian English plays that are situated in national traditions reframed their own cultural terrain in international terms. It maps the trajectory that Indian and Nigerian dramatists, such as Rabindranath Tagore, Wole Soyinka and Badal Sircar, adopted as they moved from the specific to the bicultural to the global. The intercultural dialectic validated here provides a protean comparative scaffolding that evolves out of, and reflects, the interculturality of the literatures it is critiquing, allowing the book to be an entry point, practical guide, and reference for those interested in studying and comparing literatures from Asia and Africa written or translated into English. Its approach and dialectic can also be expanded for use in comparative literary studies on all intercultural encounters. Adopting a pluralist approach, this book presents a detailed analysis of Zorba the Greek (1946), by Nikos Kazantzakis, recognised as one of the greatest writers Greece has produced since the days of Homer and the Ancient Greek dramatists. Acclaimed both as a modern classic and as an international bestseller, the novel has increasingly gained popularity not only in the Western world, but also in East Asia. This text reads Kazantzakis's novel from five different critical perspectives: formalist, existentialist, feminist, ecocritical, and intercultural. As such, it will be useful to literary critics, scholars, and general readers, as well as any person interested in literary criticism and theory. Virginia Woolf always stayed ahead of her time. Championing gender equality when women could not vote; publishing authors from Pakistan, France, Austria and other parts of the world, while nationalism in Britain was on the rise; and befriending outcasts and social pariahs. As such, what could have possibly interested her in the works of nineteenth-century Russian writers, austere and, at times, misogynistic thinkers preoccupied with peasants, priests, and paroxysms of the soul? This study explains the chronological and cultural paradox of how classic Russian fiction became crucial to Woolf's vision of British modernism. We follow Woolf as she begins to learn Russian, invents a character for a story by Dostoevsky, ponders over Sophia Tolstoy's suicide note, and proclaims Chekhov a truly 'modern' writer. The book also examines British modernists' fascination with Russian art, looking at parallels between Roger Fry's articles on Russian Post-Impressionists and Woolf's essays on Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Turgenev. The book offers a collection of papers that draw on contemporary developments in cultural studies in their discussions of postmillennial trends in works of Anglophone literature and media. The first section of the book, "Addressing the Theories of a New Cultural Paradigm", comprises ten essays that present, respectively, performatist, metamodernist, digimodernist, and hypomodernist readings of selected texts in order to test the usefulness of recent theories in explorations of the new paradigm in literary, media and food studies. The papers cover a wide variety of genres, including the novel, the film, the documentary, the cookbook, the food magazine, and the food commercial, and present a number of themes which shed light on the nature of the new paradigm. The second part of the volume, "Mapping the Dynamics of a New Sensibility", offers a wider perspective and presents seven papers that search for evidence of a new sensibility in selected examples of postmillennial texts. These contributions move beyond the frameworks of the theories explored in the first part in order to offer new perspectives in the contributors' respective fields of interest. This book provides an introductory guide to the experiments in actor training conducted by the Italian theatre maker Alessandro Fersen in his studio laboratory in Rome between 1957 and 1983. This work resulted in the creation of Mnemodrama, a "drama of memory". The technique was designed by Fersen to provide actors with a psychic training. By entering a state of trance, they were able to access previously hidden dimensions of their personas, using techniques inspired by ancient ritual practices. In the process of creating Mnemodrama, Fersen collaborated with practitioners in the fields of anthropology, ethnology, and psychology. The inclusion of a selection of his theatre writings reveals the scope and diversity of Fersen's thinking and argues for this previously little-known artist to be considered one of the pioneers of mid-20th century experimental theatre practice. Through tracing one artist's journey, this book provides new insights into the relationship between theatre and ritual.

This book is the result of a study that investigated the effects that myth in sacred text may have on personal, professional and transpersonal development. To ensure maximum impact in terms of imagery-enhancing properties, Homer's Hymn to Demeter was read, accompanied by lyre music, in a therapeutic setting and the resulting experiences examined. The author, a clinician as well as researcher, succeeds in extracting personal epiphanies that have the potential to change perceptions and contribute to a healing process. This book is a courageous and novel attempt to integrate ancient wisdom with modern scientific inquiry that honours all levels, states, and structures of consciousness within both the researcher and the study's participants. It documents the deep inner preparatory work the author undertook prior to executing the study to situate herself in the historical context and prepare her psyche at a fundamental level to, as authentically as possible, receive the data, perceptions, and experiences from participants. Skill and creativity are also apparent with regard to the nuanced sophisticated manner of data collection and analysis - not only with words, but with accompanying drawings that depict the data in a unique manner that illuminates the many ways of knowing and expressing understanding. Moreover, the inclusion of a glossary helps navigate the reader through a delightfully rich and full experience. Throughout the text, the focus of the inquiry (investigating the application of ancient Greek myth and music in personal, professional and transpersonal development) is reinforced. This work portrays a deep respect for the many ways of knowing inherent in the human species, calling for a revision of sacred script and its benefits in education and psychology. This book is sure to appeal to scholars, clinicians and educators, as well as the... educated lay reader.
