Explores Samuel Beckett's relation to painting and the visual imagination that informs his theatrical work.

Beckett was deeply engaged with the visual arts and individual painters, including Jack B. Yeats, Bram van Velde, and Avigdor Arikha. In this monograph, David Lloyd explores what Beckett saw in their paintings. He explains what visual resources Beckett found in these particular painters rather than in the surrealism of Masson or the abstraction of Kandinsky or Mondrian. The analysis of Beckett's visual imagination is based on his criticism and on close analysis of the paintings he viewed. Lloyd shows how Beckett's fascination with these painters illuminates the 'painterly' qualities of his theatre and the philosophical, political and aesthetic implications of Beckett's highly visual dramatic work.

    Key Features
    • Discusses Beckett's relationship with three painters crucial to his life-long dialogue with the visual arts
    • The first book to examine the paintings that Beckett would have known and on which he based his critical remarks
    • Accounts for the increasing visuality of Beckett's theatre in relation to his evolving appreciation of painting and the formal questions posed by that medium
    • Explores Beckett's anticipation of European phenomenology and psychoanalysis in relation to Heidegger and Lacan

Provides a new approach to contemporary Irish poetryOffers a fresh approach to Irish poetry, bringing together well-known poets with new and exciting innovative workCombines illuminating close readings of poetry with reflections grounded in critical and aesthetic theoryIntroduces a number of contemporary Irish poets whose work has not received sufficient critical attentionPuts Irish poetry in dialogue with major debates and concerns of European and American poeticsChallenges conventional assumptions about the forms and values of Irish poetryThis study puts contemporary Irish poetry in dialogue with major debates and concerns of European and American poetics. David Lloyd tracks the traits of Irish poetic modernism, from fragmentation to the suspicion of representation, to nineteenth-century responses to the rapid and unsettling effects of Ireland's precocious colonial modernity, such as language loss and political violence. He argues that Irish poetry's inventiveness is driven by the need to find formal means to engage with historical conditions that take from the writer the customary certainties of cultural continuity, identity and aesthetic or personal autonomy, rather than by poetic innovation for its own sake. This reading of Irish poetry understands the innovative impetus that persists through Irish poetry since the nineteenth century as a counterpoetics of modernity. Opening with chapters on Mangan and Yeats, the book then turns to detailed discussions of Trevor Joyce, Maurice Scully, and Catherine Walsh; major Irish contemporary poets never before the focus of a book-length study

A landmark collection showcasing the diversity of Samuel Beckett's creative outputThe 35 new and original chapters in this Companion capture the continued vitality of Beckett studies in drama, music and the visual arts and establish rich and varied cultural contexts for Beckett's work world-wide.As well as considering topics such as Beckett and science, historiography, geocriticism and philosophy, the volume focuses on the post-centenary impetus within Beckett studies, emphasising a return to primary sources amid letters, drafts, and other documents. Major Beckett critics such as Steven Connor, David Lloyd, Andrew Gibson, John Pilling, Jean-Michel Rabaté, and Mark Nixon, as well as emerging researchers, present the latest critical thinking in 9 key areas: Art & Aesthetics; Fictions; European Context; Irish Context; Film, Radio & Television; Language/Writing; Philosophies; Theatre & Performance; Global Beckett. Edited by eminent Beckett scholar S. E. Gontarski, the Companion draws on the most vital, ground-breaking research to outline the nature of Beckett studies for the next generation.

This study puts contemporary Irish poetry in dialogue with major debates and concerns of European and American poetics.
