The importance of the visual world for the development and understanding of mental images is reflected in various stages within this article. Starting with a closer look to the characteristics of Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern art the authors reflect on methodological aspects of how to interpret the images in their original environment. The meaning of aspective rendering for visual art, the relevance of a form-critical investigation of images, and the transformation of visual images in mental images are described firstly methodologically, and secondly in their reference to specific objects and in their relation to biblical texts.
