    This book traces manifestations of trickery and subversion across the Shakespearean canon in such a way as to bring together several diverse strands of critical thought. By isolating a principle of subversiveness that cuts across the standard categories, Richard Hillman shows a relation amongst otherwise disparate aspects of the plays and delineates broad patterns of development. In Shakespearean Subversions discussion of such obviously subversive character-types as the Clown, the Fool and the Machiavellian villain is incorporated into a broader concern with disruptive energy, not as a thematic motif, but as a generative influence on textual production. Hillman suggests that this influence may be exercised, paradoxically, through the counter-claims of social order. The book situates this central idea in relation to a number of theoretical positions, including New Historicism, Cultural Materialism, and Bakhtin's concept of the carnivalesque. The primary conceptual anchor is supplied by recent anthropological interpretations of the folklore figure known as the Trickster. The subsequent plan of the book is wide-ranging: there is discussion of almost every play, with some unusual associations across boundaries of genre and a number of radically unconventional specific interpretations. Shakespearean Subversions will appeal to specialists and to any reader with a serious interest in Shakespearean drama.

    L'année 1660 marqua en Angleterre la double restauration de la monarchie et du théâtre, réduit à la clandestinité par les puritains pendant les dix-huit années précédentes. Pour réinventer le théâtre anglais, les dramaturges puisent dans le répertoire classique français de nombreux sujets et intrigues, non sans en discuter les principes esthétiques. Un siècle plus tard, la découverte de Shakespeare en France révolutionna la dramaturgie tout autant que le jeu de l'acteur. La circulation et l'appropriation des modèles et répertoires français et anglais ne se limitent toutefois pas à ces périodes bien identifiées. Elles prennent, surtout, des formes complexes et variées, en s'inscrivant dans un cadre européen plus large incluant notamment l'Italie, mais aussi dans le contexte d'une réflexion sur l'esthétique théâtrale ainsi que l'utilité et/ou la nocivité du théâtre qui prend la forme de virulentes querelles de part et d'autre de la Manche. Enfin, les traductions, adaptations, plagiats ou pièces françaises à sujets anglais autant que pièces anglaises à sujets français sont toujours porteurs d'enjeux esthétiques, économiques et idéologiques importants, qu'il s'agisse de construire un modèle dramatique national ou de formuler à travers eux une position religieuse, politique ou morale. C'est à l'ensemble de ces interrogations qu'est consacré le présent ouvrage, dans lequel est exploré et analysé un corpus théorique, polémique et dramatique couvrant trois siècles d'une histoire croisée.

    During her lifetime, the gifted writer Marie le Jars de Gournay (1565-1645) was celebrated as one of the 'seventy most famous women of all time' in Jean de la Forge's Circle of Learned Women (1663). The adopted daughter of Michel de Montaigne, as well as his editor, she was a major literary force and a pioneering feminist voice during a tumultuous period in France. This volume presents translations of four of Gournay's works that address feminist issues, two of them appearing here in English for the first time.

    This book traces manifestations of trickery and subversion across the Shakespearean canon in such a way as to bring together several diverse strands of critical thought. By isolating a principle of subversiveness that cuts across the standard categories, Richard Hillman shows a relation amongst otherwise disparate aspects of the plays and delineates broad patterns of development. In Shakespearean Subversions discussion of such obviously subversive character-types as the Clown, the Fool and the Machiavellian villain is incorporated into a broader concern with disruptive energy, not as a thematic motif, but as a generative influence on textual production. Hillman suggests that this influence may be exercised, paradoxically, through the counter-claims of social order. The book situates this central idea in relation to a number of theoretical positions, including New Historicism, Cultural Materialism, and Bakhtin's concept of the carnivalesque. The primary conceptual anchor is supplied by recent anthropological interpretations of the folklore figure known as the Trickster. The subsequent plan of the book is wide-ranging: there is discussion of almost every play, with some unusual associations across boundaries of genre and a number of radically unconventional specific interpretations. Shakespearean Subversions will appeal to specialists and to any reader with a serious interest in Shakespearean drama.
