Constance Naden (1858–1889) is a unique voice in Victorian literature and science. This book, the first full-length critical account of her life and works, brings into focus the reciprocal nature of Naden’s poetry, philosophical essays and scientific studies. The development of Naden’s thinking is explored in detail, with newly discovered unpublished poems and notes from her adolescence shedding important light upon this progression.Close readings of Naden’s wide-ranging corpus of poetry and prose trace her commitment to an interdisciplinary world-scheme that sought unity in diversity. This book demonstrates how a rigorous scientific education, a thorough engagement with poetry and philosophy of the long nineteenth century, an involvement with the Victorian radical atheist movement, and a comic sensibility each shaped Naden’s intellectual achievements. Naden sought to show how the light of reason is made even brighter by the spark of poetic creation and how the imagination is as much a tool of the scientist and the philosopher as the artist.Taking a comprehensive approach to this complex and overlooked figure of the Victorian period, Stainthorp demonstrates how Naden’s texts provide a new and important vantage point from which to consider synthetic thinking as a productive and creative force within nineteenth-century intellectual culture. This book was the winner of the 2017 Peter Lang Young Scholars Competition in Nineteenth-Century Studies. «This book represents a much-needed, full-length study of the brilliant intellectual trail Constance Naden blazed as a student and scholar: of the many facets of her brilliant career, and of her expansive synthetic mode of thinking. Naden’s career interlaced so many issues and disciplines in such a fascinating way that, in this timely work, she acts as a case study for thinking about the value and practice of interdisciplinarity itself. This is an astute, lucid and illuminating analysis.» (Marion Thain, Professor of Literature and Culture, King’s College London)«Stainthorp’s study of Constance Naden both reveals and revels in the interdependence of disciplines that was her subject’s tragically short-lived contribution to nineteenth-century thought. In doing so she thoughtfully synthesizes the variant parts of Naden’s intellectual life. The result is a book of insightful combinations and cross-readings which illuminate the unity in diversity that was Naden’s driving force.» (Martin Willis, Professor of English Literature, Cardiff University and editor of the Journal of Literature and Science)«This is an important, meticulously researched book. Stainthorp is marvellously alert to Naden’s desire to find unity in diversity in her writing. She puts Naden’s poetry, prose and unpublished notebooks to work and the result is a ground-breaking analysis of Naden’s synthetic thinking. A boon to scholars working on Naden.» (Ana Parejo Vadillo, Reader in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture, Birkbeck College, University of London)...

Continental Crosscurrents explores British attitudes to continental art during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and reveals some exciting connections. Coleridge's wild enthusiasm for medieval art and Browning's distaste for Nazarene painting are explored more extensively than ever before. The figures of Edmund Sharpe and Sara Losh in the history of the Romanesque revival are virtually unknown, and for the first time the motives for AlfredWaterhouse's choice of this style for the Natural History Museum in London are revealed. The book concludes with the explosive British reaction to the primitivism of Gauguin and the mysterious unravelling of the identity of the figure of Loerke from Lawrence's Women in Love.

"Continental Crosscurrents" is a series of case studies reflecting British attitudes to continental art during the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. It stresses the way in which the British went to the continent in their search for origins or their pursuit of sources of purity and originality. This cult of the primitive took many forms; it involved a reassessment of medieval German and Italian art and offered new ways of interpreting Venetian painting; it opened up new readings of architectural history and the 'discovery' of the Romanesque; it generated a debate about the value of returning to religious subjects in art and it raised the question of the relationship between modern art and Byzantine art in the early twentieth century. J.B. Bullen's original study presents some exciting findings. Few critics have noticed how much in advance of his time was Coleridge's passion for medieval art; Ruskin's debt in the "Stones of Venice" to Victor Hugo's "Notre Dame de Paris" has hardly been noted, and Browning's involvement with the debate on the morality of Christian art is explored more extensively than previously.; Three chapters are devoted to the role of British criticism in identifying the Romanesque style in architecture and differentiating it from the Gothic. They trace the concept as it arose in criticism at the beginning of the nineteenth century; its employment in the remarkable buildings of Edmund Sharpe and Sara Losh and the way in which it reached a climax in Waterhouse's enigmatic choice of Romanesque for the Natural History Museum in London. The collection concludes with two continental episodes from the history of modernism. One is the explosive British reaction to the primitivism of Gauguin; the other involves the identifying of one of the characters in D.H. Lawrence's novel "Women in Love". Curious evidence suggests that the malevolent figure of Loerke was based on a German sculptor whom Lawrence met in Italy before the First World War.

Gardens provoke thought and engagement in ways that are often overlooked. This book shines new light on long-held assumptions about gardens and proposes novel ways in which we might reconsider them. The author challenges traditional views of how we experience gardens, how we might think of gardens as works of art, and how the everyday materials of gardens – plants, light, water, earth – may become artful. The author provides a detailed analysis of Tupare, a garden in New Zealand, and uses it as source material for his analysis of the philosophical issues art gardens raise. His new account of gardens highlights the polymodal, multi-sensual, and improvisatory character of the garden experience, it offers an ontological comparison between gardens and humans and other animals, and it explains how identical plants, and arrangements of plants, may be mundane when encountered beyond the garden but artful, meaningful, and aesthetically valuable when experienced within it. «Powell’s stimulating and rigorously argued book offers new insights into the ways in which we experience and understand gardens, how we conceptualise their ontology, and how we appreciate their temporality and material beauty. A timely and highly engaging account that reintroduces gardens’ distinctive qualities, features, processes, aesthetic possibilities, and arthood as sites of joy and celebration.»(Professor Samer Akkach, Founding Director, CAMEA, University of Adelaide)«Dancing with Time offers a novel account of gardens that returns them to a prized position in the artworld. Highlighting their distinctive, four-dimensional nature, this important work explains how temporality enriches our experience of gardens. The rich examination of gardens’ status as art will delight aestheticians, landscape design theorists, and garden lovers alike.» (Professor Sondra Bacharach, Professor of Philosophy, Victoria University of Wellington)«A welcome addition to the growing interest in philosophical writing about gardens. ... Powell’s search for answers as to whether or not gardens can (again) be an art form and the nature of their ontological status is careful and exacting ... » (Isis Brook, «British Journal of Aesthetics», 2019)...

In the 120 years since the publication of his final poetry collection, Decorations: In Verse and Prose (1899), Ernest Dowson has become something of a Decadent legend, much anthologized and referenced in almost every study of English Decadent literature, but still is considered a minor figure of the fin de siècle. He is, in fact, an important intermediary between late nineteenth-century Decadence and literary Modernism. This first collection of critical essays devoted solely to Dowson draws him out of the shadows and acknowledges his talent and legacy. The essays in this volume by established and emergent Dowson scholars offer new perspectives on some of the most noteworthy aspects of Dowson’s oeuvre, including Catholicism and Paganism, desire and sexuality, space and place, his relationships with Decadent contemporaries including Paul Verlaine and Aubrey Beardsley, and his poetic resonance in twentieth-century literature and music. «Alice Condé and Jessica Gossling’s edited collection of essays on the fin-de-siècle English poet Ernest Dowson, an iconic decadent figure whose significance is more assumed than established, is a valuable addition to contemporary reconsiderations of decadence in all its manifestations – as literary movement, as cultural sensibility, and as social orientation.» (David Weir, Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature, Cooper Union)...

The study of scents and all things olfactory is thriving, a sign of the great interest that our information-based society feels for a sense that seems to offer a direct and immediate experience of reality. But smells resist description and representation, especially given that they are closely linked to individual personal experience, and their perception has changed through time and space in a myriad of ways. This volume aims to contribute to the flourishing multidisciplinary exchanges around smells by examining the question of their mediality, focusing on the mechanisms by which the olfactory experience, as well as the scents themselves, circulate and are diffused, but also by exploring the modes of smell as a medium in itself. Drawing on a wide variety of approaches, cultural zones, and historical periods, this volume gathers the contributions of twenty-one researchers who specialize in this field in order to explore the multiple aspects of olfactory culture, which characterizes and shapes our relations to smells. «This innovative collection of seventeen contributions to the ever-widening world of olfaction is insightful, erudite, and elegantly presented. The book uses mediality as the angle of approach in a truly interdisciplinary endeavor and underscores how the world is given to us synesthetically, across senses and scholarly disciplines, and how much fragrances provide the vital atmosphere.» (Professor Hans J. Rindisbacher, Pomona College)...

«Adopting an interdisciplinary approach to a range of visual and textual material, this engaging and illuminating collection compels twenty-first-century readers to take a fresh look at the multiple ways in which readers and reading were represented in the long nineteenth century.» (Professor Julia Thomas, Cardiff University)The long nineteenth century saw a prolific increase in the number of books being produced and read and, consequently, in the number of visual and textual discourses about reading. This collection examines a range of visual and textual iconographies of readers produced during this period and maps the ways in which such representations engaged with crucial issues of the time, including literary value, gender formation, familial relationships, the pursuit of leisure and the understanding of new technologies.Gauging the ways in which Victorians conceptualized reading has often relied on textual sources, but here we recognize and elaborate the importance of visual culture – often in dialogue with textual evidence – in shaping the way people read and thought about reading. This book brings together historians, literary scholars and art historians using a range of methodologies and theoretical approaches to address ideas of readership found in fine art, photography, arts and craft, illustration, novels, diaries and essays. The volume shows how the field of readership studies can be enriched and furthered through an interdisciplinary approach and, in particular, through an exploration of the visual iconography of readers and reading. «Adopting an interdisciplinary approach to a range of visual and textual material, this engaging and illuminating collection compels twenty-first-century readers to take a fresh look at the multiple ways in which readers and reading were represented in the long nineteenth century.»(Professor Julia Thomas, Cardiff University)...

The Edwardian era is often romanticised as a tranquil period of garden parties and golden afternoons in which everyone knew their place and nobody questioned the order of things. The reality, however, was quite different. The years between 1901 and 1914 were a highly turbulent period of intense social conflict marked by a heightened awareness of class consciousness, inequality and poverty. The increasing mobilisation of the lower classes and women was often countered with violent means, while anybody considered to be the «other» - immigrants, lunatics, the poor, homosexuals - became the target of widespread discrimination. For many of these groups, the only way to fight back was through writing, which they used to voice resistance and contest traditional power structures. This volume aims to draw attention to the importance of «ordinary writing» - that is, «writing that is typically unseen or ignored and is primarily defined by its status as discardable» - as a form of rebellion for marginalised Edwardians. Using a multidisciplinary perspective to explore a range of material artefacts, from postcards and diary entries to pamphlets and book inscriptions, it aims to unearth voices that have been silent throughout history, transmitting new narratives on such important issues as suffragism, Irish nationalism, the working-class movement and pauper insanity. «This bold, brave and genuinely interdisciplinary collection of essays reminds us that social disobedience was not only rife during the Edwardian period, but that it was endlessly, and powerfully, creative. Rebellious writing could be found in some extraordinary places. The value of these so-called ‹ordinary› texts cannot be underestimated, as these essays prove again and again.» (Dr Samuel Shaw, Founder of the Edwardian Culture Network and Teaching Fellow in Nineteenth-Century Art, Leicester University) «The book offers a unique and innovative approach to the everyday literacies of marginalised Edwardians and immerses the reader into their acts of rebellious writing. This comprehensive and compelling collection of work promises to be a key resource for literacy scholars with an interest in identity, conflict and social class and it will serve as an intoxicant for those who remain a rebel at heart.» (Dr Tereza Spilioti, Reader in Language and Communication, Cardiff University)...

When the Bloomsbury critics Roger Fry and Clive Bell introduced an aesthetically conservative English public to recent Parisian avant-garde painting, they explained its disconcerting imagery by way of a late nineteenth-century metaphysical tradition which had long intrigued musicians and Symbolist writers on the European continent. The Post-Impressionist aesthetic they devised advocated a direct response to the formal ingenuity of the work of art without recourse to prior knowledge and emphasized the significance of visionary genius, albeit to the detriment of narrative acuity and technical accomplishment, values hitherto upheld by the Edwardian art establishment. The provocation was calculated, the author suggests, and its domestic ramifications were predictable: the reaction of an Anglo-conformist public in New York, on the other hand, was anything but. Recreating an Anglo-American dialogue inspired by Fry and Bell, and framed within a period encompassing Fry’s Manet and the Post-Impressionists exhibition in 1910 and Alfred Barr Jr’s Cubism and Abstract Art exhibition in 1936, the author demonstrates how key components of Bloomsbury’s aesthetic bypassed a pre-existent modernist practice in New York and were instead taken up by an urban intelligentsia which adapted them to the requirements of an increasingly professionalized institutional practice during the 1920s. «For some twenty-five years, Roger Fry and Clive Bell had a significant, if now largely overlooked, influence upon the aesthetics of visual Modernism. David Maddock’s deeply researched book skillfully argues for Fry and Bell’s philosophical and institutional importance to an intriguing ‹backstory› that goes beyond ‹Bloomsbury› to cast new light on the key artists, movements and critical debates of Anglo-American Modernism.» (Douglas Tallack, Emeritus Professor of American Studies, University of Leicester, UK)«A superb study that reveals the close connections between the aesthetic thought of Roger Fry and Clive Bell and its long-reaching impact on American modernism that makes an important contribution to our understanding of the transnational networks that defined modern art and the ideas and institutions that supported it.» (Anna Gruetzner Robins, Professor Emeritus in History of Art, University of Reading)...

Cast in the shadow of the soldier-poets of the First World War, Victorian war poets have often been disparaged as «armchair patriots» glorifying military action in an unthinking fashion. Challenging this long-standing assumption, The Crimean War in Victorian Poetry considers the evolution of the figure of the homefront poet and explores the daunting task of representing war from a civilian perspective.By virtue of the medium of modern reportage, the Crimean War (1854-1856) witnessed the inauguration of the civilian spectatorship of distant suffering, provoking a heated debate over the concept of the war poet and the function of war poetry during moments of national crisis. Confronted with news of soldiers’ hardships and of the distress caused by the government’s mismanagement of war, the so-called armchair poet sought ways of addressing the problem of pain and adversity from a distance and of engaging with the politics of war by composing lines of verse at home. This is the first book-length study to examine the predicaments and achievements of mid-Victorian war poets. It provides historically nuanced readings of how a diverse group of British poets – ranging from the Poet Laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson to the highly acclaimed female poet Louisa Stuart Costello – fought a literary war as they reworked the established traditions of war poetry and experimented with poetic forms in response to news of distant combat.
