    In the third century B.C.E., translators began retelling the stories of the Hebrew Bible in Greek. The Septuagint was born but its analysis had just begun. To date, most Septuagint translation technique analysis has focused on the linguistic sensitivity of these translators, but there is more to storytelling than linguistics. Translators as Storytellers addresses the literary sensitivity of the translators, thus, expanding the tradition of translation technique analysis to include the translator’s replication of characterization, time, the patterning play of words, and the artful use of geography. «A knowledge of ancient translation technique has great value in deriving historical and theological insights from a text or in observing grammatical and lexical features that a text may exhibit. Beck’s insightful volume helpfully measures in rather conventional methodology (i.e. linguistic and narrative-critical analysis) the literary sensitivity employed by the Septuagintal translators of certain portions of the Hebrew Bible, but it goes on to experiment with what the author calls a ‘narrative-geography’ methodology. The reader of this volume is likely to be surprised to learn that a narrative-geography model of analysis does demonstrate that geography can function far beyond the axiomatic level of mere setting in the shaping of the literary form of a Hebrew narrative and, in point of fact, can on frequent occasion provide enhanced refinement and support to measurements obtained when employing more conventional strategies. In other words, this book plows new ground and offers its readers refreshing methodological perspectives in translation technique analysis.» (Barry J.
