    Mit den Commentaria et Lexica Graeca in Papyris reperta wird der Fachwelt ein einzigartiges papyrologisches Sammelwerk vorgelegt. Die bisher verstreut publizierten, auf Papyrus erhaltenen Teile antiker griechischer Kommentare - d.h. der Hypomnemata und Randnotizen zu griechischen Autoren sowie der Glossare und Lexika - werden in diesem Lexikon alphabetisch zusammengeführt. Zu jedem im Lexikon erfassten Fragment erhält der Benutzer zunächst einen Überblick über Herkunft, Entstehungszeit und derzeitigen Aufbewahrungsort sowie über alle dazu bisher erschienenen Publikationen. Darauf folgen die Anmerkungen unter Auswertung aller vorliegenden Aspekte in der jeweiligen Landessprache des Kommentators. Das Werk wird von mehr als 40 Wissenschaftlern aus verschiedenen europäischen und außereuropäischen Ländern erarbeitet. Im 2-Jahres-Rhythmus sind je ein bis zwei Lieferungen im Umfang von 250-300 Seiten vorgesehen. Das Gesamtwerk, das insgesamt etwa 15 Lieferungen umfassen soll, ist in vier Hauptteile gegliedert: Pars I: Commentaria et lexica in auctores; Pars II: Commentaria in adespota; Pars III: Lexica; Pars IV: Concordantiae et Indices. Bis jetzt noch nicht publizierte Papyri werden im Anhang reproduziert.

Cramer, whose edition is based on a single manuscript and contains a large number of inaccuracies. Nonetheless, all the subsequent editors of John Geometres' poems have used this edition without consulting the manuscript(s) themselves. This book presents a new edition of his poems in hexameters and elegiacs, with critical apparatus, commentary and translation. Die Düsterkeit der hier dargestellten Welt, aus der sich die Götter anscheinend zurückgezogen haben, mag den moderen Zuschauer und Leser befremden. Man kann aber zu einem historisch angemesseneren Verständnis dieses "schwärzesten Stückes des Euripides" gelangen, wenn man versucht, es mit den Augen der Zeitgenossen zu sehen Frontmatter; Inhalt; Einführung; Text, Übersetzung, Kommentar; Backmatter.

The oral tradition of lament in the Homeric poems forms the point of departure for close readings of epigraphic material and written texts commemorating the dead in the archaic and classical periods, including grave epigrams, threnoi, tragedy, and Athenian epitaphioi . These texts reveal the non-linear development of Greek literacy and offer insight into the ongoing influence of lament in diverse poetic genres and the evolving uses of death and mourning in different media. In particular, the discussion focuses on the role of writing in commemorating soldiers and the evolution of the written memorial into a historical and civic medium of communication

    More than 140 years have gone by since R. Hercher's 1864 Teubner edition, a book with serious editorial shortcomings which have been often underlined in recent publications. This new text offers an accurate and new critical edition as a result of an extensive and detailed work undertook by a team of scholars of the University of Oviedo (Spain), under the direction of the Professor Manuela García Valdés. The text has been established on the basis of a complete collation of all the most significant manuscripts of Aelians' textual tradition. This is the first edition with an accurate and scientific critical apparatus by applying the scope of textual criticism and ecdotics. The edition also takes into account the literary koiné of II-III centuries AD and the authors' own style. This edition offers to all scholars a reliable text as a starting point for future research on Aelians' Language and Stoic thought. It will be also useful for studies on zoology, on animals' habits and behaviour, medieval bestiaries, and on the concepts of Science and Technique in Late Antiquity. Confronted with his wealth of materials, the author writes each chapter as a finished unit, as a short story. He uses a wide variety of both literary and linguistic expedients, resorting to formal and content resources

    The second part of the Odyssey takes epic in new directions, giving significant roles to people of 'lower status' and their way of life: epic notions of the primacy of the aristocrat and the achievements of the Trojan War are submitted to scrutiny. Books XIII and XIV contain some of the subtlest human exchanges in the poem, as Athena and Odysseus spar with each other and Odysseus tests the quiet patience of his swineherd Eumaeus. The principal themes and narrative structures, especially of disguise and recognition, which the second part uses with remarkable economy, are established here. The Introduction also includes a detailed historical account of the Homeric dialect, as well as sections on metre and the text itself. The Commentary on the Greek text pays particular attention to the exposition of unfamiliar linguistic forms and constructions. The literary parts of the Introduction and the Commentary are accessible to all.

    This up-to-date edition offers a detailed literary and cultural analysis of Euripides' Helen, a work which arguably embodies the variety and dynamism of fifth-century Athenian tragedy more than any other surviving play. The story of an exemplary wife (not an adulteress) who went to Egypt (not to Troy), Euripides' 'new Helen' skilfully transforms and supplants earlier currents of literature and myth. The Introduction elucidates Euripides' treatment of Helen and sets the play in its wider intellectual context. It also discusses questions of genre and reception, rejecting such descriptions as 'tragicomedy' or 'romantic tragedy', and showing how later artists have responded to Euripides' unorthodox heroine and her phantom double. The Commentary's notes on language and style are intended to make Helen fully accessible to readers of Greek at all levels, while the edition as a whole is designed for use by anyone with an interest in Greek tragedy.
