    This text tries to illustrate what we understand by strangeness, alterity and exotopy. From the point of view of a stranger, we, as Brazilians, see and read products of foreign cultures in an exotopic way, which is quite productive. The same occurs with Germans looking at US, which gives us another view of ourselves. As an illustration, the poem "calypso" from Ernst Jandl will be discussed in this context. Dieser Text versucht zu veranschaulichen, was man unter Fremdheit, Alterität und Exotopie versteht. Als Brasilianer sehen und lesen wir Produkte einer fremden Kultur von einem exotopischen Standpunkt aus, der besonders produktiv ist. Dieselbe Perspektive haben wiederum Deutsche, wenn sie ihren Blick auf uns richten, was uns selbst eine neue Perspektive unserer Identität ermöglicht. Als Veranschaulichung wird das Gedicht "calypso" von Ernst Jandl in diesem Kontext behandelt.

    Heinrich Heine and Castro Alves wrote poems with the same title: "Das Sklavenschiff" and "O Navio Negreiro". However, this does not mean that Castro Alves plagiarized Heinrich Heine, the author of the first source. Although both of the poems deal with the same theme, an analysis will show and prove the evident divergency in the convergency. Heinrich Heine und Castro Alves haben Gedichte unter dem gleichen Titel geschrieben: "Das Sklavenschiff" und "O Navio Negreiro". Das bedeutet aber nicht, daß Castro Alves ein Plagiat des Gedichts Heines, des Verfassers der ersten Quelle, begangen hat. Trotz der gleichen Thematik in beiden Fällen kann man durch die Analyse der beiden Gedichte die deutliche Divergenz in der Konvergenz belegen.

    This article deals with the annotations made by Victor Klemperer, in the diary of his 1925 journey to Rio de Janeiro. His descriptions are shown to be pervaded by his constant attempt to analyse, to interpret objectively and to compare his observations with what he already knew, and not merely a protocol of his emotions and the impressions brought about by the newness and the exotism of his experiences during the journey. Der vorliegende Aufsatz handelt von den Aufzeichnungen Viktor Klemperers im Tagebuch seiner Reise nach Rio de Janeiro von 1925. Es wird herausgearbeitet, daß seine Beschreibungen nicht einfach seine Gefühle und Eindrücke angesichts der Neuheit und des Exotismus seiner Reiseerfahrungen wiedergeben, sondern durchdrungen sind von seinem beständigen Bemühen, zu analysieren, auf objektive Weise zu interpretieren und seine Beobachtungen mit schon Bekanntem zu vergleichen.

    In September of 1997, a group of German and Brazilian literary critics met at the University of São Paulo, in order to comment on the aesthetics of two great soccer schools. As our "basic text" we chose the match Germany vs Brazil (final score: 3 : 3; half-time score: 0 : 3), which took place in Washington, in June 1993, between the two tripte World Champions. Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht (Stanford University) proposed a philosophical reflection on football/Fußball, combined with a comparative analysis of soccer and American football. In both modalities he identified the magic phenomenon of "production of presence", which expresses itself through three functions: the ontological function (action vs nothing), the "epiphany of form" (the touch of genius) and the oscillation between finality and telos (linked to the mise-en-scène of intention and contingency). These three functions manifest themselves in both American football and soccer, but in different forms. Flávio Aguiar (University of Säo Paulo) pointed out the phenomenon of empty spaces and the occupation of space. Antonio Medina (University of São Paulo) contrasted the somewhat ontologic character of American football with the mimetic character of soccer, especially as played in Brazil, where the paradigm of masters and slaves is still present. José Miguel Wisnik (University of São Paulo) elaborated on the dialectics of production of presence (resistance against interpretation, "no-hermeneutics") and production of sense. In his reply, Gumbrecht explained that the concepts of empty and occupied space imply religious allusions (transcendental emptiness). Willi Bolle (University of São Paulo) raised the question of the extent to which the issue of aesthetics, seen from the perspective of American football and soccer, must be totally reconsidered. Im September 1997 trafen sich deutsche und brasilianische Literaturwissenschaftler in der Universität São Paulo, um den Stil zweier großer Fußball-Schulen zu kommentieren. Als "Textgrundlage" hatten wir das Spiel Deutschland : Brasilien ausgewählt (Endstand: 3 : 3; Halbzeitstand: 0: 3), das im Juni 1993 in Washington zwischen den seinerzeit dreifachen Weltmeistern ausgetragen worden war. Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht (Universität Stanford) schlug eine philosophische Reflexion über den Fußball vor, verbunden mit einer vergleichenden Analyse des Soccer und des American Football. In beiden Ballspielarten beobachtet er das magische Phänomen der "Produktion von Gegenwart". Sie tritt in drei Arten von Funktionen zu Tage – ontologische Funktion (die Aktion gegen das Nichts), die "Epiphanie der Form" (der geniale Spielzug) und Spannung zwischen Finalität und Telos (oder auch Inszenierung von Intentionalität und Kontingenz) –, die sich sowohl im Football wie im Fußball beobachten lassen, aber in ganz verschiedener Zusammensetzung. Flávio Aguiar (Universität São Paulo) hob in seinem Kommentar das Phänomen der leeren Spielräume und der Besetzung des Raums hervor. Antonio Medina (Universität São Paulo) setzte dem eher ontologischen Charakter des American Football den mimetischen Charakter des Fußballs entgegen, der (zumindest in Brasilien) von dem Verhältnis zwischen Herren und Sklaven affiziert wird.     This paper analyses the idea of the avant-garde in Benjamin and its reception in German literary criticism after World War II. It examines the works of Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Peter Bürger, who focus on the concept of avantgarde. This perspective allows us to broaden our reflection on German literary history since the end of World War II, and this contributes to the discussion on Postmodernism. The elaboration of the concept of allegory gives this discussion a clearer direction. Benjamin's key-notion of profane illumination was not received in a theoretical-philological way – but it materialized as experience in the students' revolt at the end of the 60s and the beginning of the 70s. Der Beitrag untersucht die Idee der Avantgarde bei Benjamin und ihre Rezeption in der deutschen Literaturkritik nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg. Dabei werden besonders die Arbeiten von Hans Magnus Enzensberger und Peter Bürger kritisch kommentiert, die vor allem den Begriff der Avantgarde betonen. Dieser Gesichtspunkt erlaubt eine Horizonterweiterung der Reflexion über die deutsche Literaturgeschichte seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs und trägt zur literaturwissenschaftlichen Diskussion über die Post-Moderne bei. In der Vertiefung des Begriffs der Allegorie eröffnet sich dann ein definitiver Weg. Benjamins Schlüsselbegriff der profanen Erleuchtung wurde nicht theoretisch-philologisch rezipiert – verwirklichte sich aber als Erfahrung in der Revolte Ende der 60er und Anfang der 70er Jahre.

    The present article is a comparative analysis of "Das Parfum" by Patrick Süskind and "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte" by Adalbert von Chamisso. The analysis applies Walter Benjamin 's concepts of experience and event to the deep structure of the narratives and the characters and confronts the issue of identity of the modern hero, who is unable to undergo any kind of experience, with the loss of sense that the individual suffers from as a result of the disenchantment of the world. O presente artigo e uma análise comparativa de "Das Parfum" de Patrick Süskind e "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte" de Adalbert von Chamisso. A análise aplica os conceitos de experiencia e evento da Walter Benjamin à estrutura profunda das narrativas e dos caracteres e confronta a temátiea da identidade do herói moderno sem nenhuma experiência com a perda de sentido que o indivíduo sofre em função do desencantamento do mundo.

    Este artigo trata do desenvolvimento dos estudos da tradução na Europa, no siculo XX. O maior enfoque está na mudança da perspeciiva de pesquisa, da comparação entre línguas para a confrontação de textos e da focalização datradução como atividade pragmática para a investigação do pensamento do tradutor (perspectiva cognitiva). Paralelamente à discussão dos conceitos teóricos, comenta-se também o desenvolvimento institucional dos estudos da tradução. Der vorliegende Aufsatz behandelt die Entwicklung der europäischen Übersetzungswissenschaft im 20. Jahrhundert. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Wandel der Forschungsperspektive vom Vergleich einzelner Sprachen hin zur Gegenüberstellung von Texten und von der Betonung des Handlungscharakters der Übersetzung hin zur Untersuchung des übersetzerischen Denkens (kognitive Perspektive). Parallel zur Diskussion theoretischer Konzepte, ist auch die institutionelle Entwicklung der Übersetzungswissenschaft Gegenstand der Untersuchung.

    This paper discusses the question of how Translation Theory and German Philology can be helpful to each other. It starts with some general observations on the history of the German Language with special emphasis on Middle High German. In the second part, a Middle High German Poem is translated into Portuguese. Der vorliegende Aufsatz diskutiert die Frage, in welchen Punkten Übersetzungstheorie und deutsche Philologie sich gegenseitig unterstützen können. Er beginnt mit einigen generellen Beobachtungen zur Geschichte der deutschen Sprache mit besonderer Berücksichtigung des Mittelhochdeutschen. Im zweiten Teil wird ein mittelhochdeutsches Gedicht ins Portugiesische übersetzt.

    The "Death of Literature" will be doubted as an affirmation, but, on the other hand, it will be analysed as an effective and dynamic theme in the history of literature. Considering the "Advent of new Medias" (J. Hörisch) and with reference to J. Derrida it will be demonstrated that literature since antiguity is orientated on an not only phonetical, but also optical 'Imaginary', and it is always playing with the auto-transgressing of itself- and that consequently the audio-visual medias represent a very special challenge as they are a kind of 'fulfilling' of these intraliterary tendencies. Modern German-speaking authors react upon this new "anxiety of influence" (H. Bloom) in at least five ways: by retreating in the 'essence' of literature (askesis), by adopting various technical elements (adaptio), by historizing and 'outstripping' the medias (reductio), by pretending an anticipation of the innovations of the medias by the literature (anticipatio) and last but not least with a fight under equals, using all means (agon).

    In the present context of the triumph of capitalism over real socialism, this article points out that, despite their ideological differences, both systems are bound to the same conception of history-as-progress. In contrast, it recalls Walter Benjamin's philosophy of history, marked by the critique of progress in the name of a revolutionary time, which interrupts history's chronological continuum. Benjamin's perspective is used to study the conflict of temporalities among the Soviet artists in the two decades after the October Revolution: on the one hand, the anarchic, autonomous and critical time of interruption – which is the time of avant-gade –, on the other hand, the synchronization with the ideas of a progressive time as ordered by the Communist Patty; this is the time of vanguard, whose capitalist Counterpart is fashion. Nestes tempos de triunfo do capitalismo sobre o socialismo real, o presente artigo mostra que, apesar de suas diferences ideológicas, ambos os sistemas baseiamse numa concepcão da história como progresso. Contrastivamente, é lembrada a filosofia da história de Walter Benjamin, marcada pela crítica do progresso e a concepção de um tempo revolucionário, que interrompe o continuum histórico. A luz da teoria benjaminiana é estudado o conflito de concepções de tempo entre os artistas soviéticos das duas décadas posteriores à Revolução de Outubro de 1917: de um lado, o tempo da interrupção, anárquico, autônomo e crítico – que é o tempo da avat-garde –, do outro lado, a sincronização com una idéia de um tempo progressivo tal como foi decretado pelo Partido Comunista; este é o tempo das vanguardas, cuja contrapartida capitalista é a moda.

    In view of the tremendous success of Victor Klemperer's diaries testimoning his personal experience as a Jew in Nazi Germany, this article discusses the specific contribution of witness literature to the knowledge of history. During the Holocaust period, in the face of death, true historical knowledge was essentially reduced to personal experience. Klemperer's clandestine journal exposes how the collective trauma affected everybody through the daily speech patterns, dictated by the Nazis' appropriation of the German language. In this memory of Alltagsgeschichte as a critical history of language can be seen the specific contribution of Literature of testimony. The function of Klemperers chronicle of 'Lingua Tertii Imperii' to develop the readers linguistic sensitivity, in order to enable them to reappropriate their language. Diante da enorme repercussção publica, nos anos 1990, dos diários de Victor Klempercr sobre sua experiência pessoal como judeu na Alemanha nazista, este artigo discute o tipo cspecífico de conhecimento da história proporcionado pela literatura de testemunho. Durante o período do holocausto, no confronto diário com a morte, o conhecimento hlstórico verdadeiro se aguçou nas experiências pessoais. O jornal clandestino de Klemperer expõe como o trauma coletivo afetou a todos por meio dos padrões cotidianos de fala, ditados pela apropriação nazista da língua alemã. Nessa memória da história do cotidiano enquanto história crítica da linguagem pode ser visto o valor específico da literatura de testemunho. A função da crônica de Klemperer da 'lingua Tertii Imperii' consiste em desenvolver nos leitores a sensibilidade lingüística, no sentido de poderem se reapropriar de sua língua.

    This paper, written by an anthropologist, describes his fieldwork experience in the Afro-Brazilian temple Casa das Minas, São Luis do Maranhão, in 1981-1982, done with the German writer Hubert Fichte. Although correcting some statements in Fichte's book on the same subject and criticizing his indiscretion towards several of his informants, the article emphasizes the learning process with the German "ethnopoet": his skillful interview technique, the priority given to subjects of general interest, the importance of card files, the sought for beauty in the statements… As to the methodological differences between ethnography and ethnopoetry, the latter is free from the conventions of anthropological work, being able to concentrate on the beauty of the text and to conceive ethnography as a literary form. On the other hand, the advantages of ethnography, especially in Malinowski's tradition, are in the commitment with true facts and the precision of details. – See also, in this number of Pandaemonium Germanicum, Willi Bolle's complementary article on "Ethnopoetry and Ethnography". Dies ist der Erfahrungsbericht eines brasilianischen Anthropologen über seine Feldforschung in Zusammenarbeit mit dem deutschen Schriftsteller Hubert Fichte in der Casa das Minas, in São Luis do Maranhão, 1981-1982. Wenngleich einige Fehlinformationen Fichtes berichtigt sowie seine Indiskretion gegenüber Informanten kritisiert werden, stellt dieser Aufsatz die mit dem deutschen 'Ethnopoeten' gemachten Lernerfahrungen in den Vordergrund: seine Kunst des Interviews, die Priorität von Gegenständen allgemeinen Interesses, die Wichtigkeit der Karteikarten-Datei, die Suche nach Schönheit in den Aussagen... Was die methodologischen Unterschiede betrifft, so erweist sich die Ethnopoesie ab frei von den Konventionen anthropologischer Feldforschung und kann sich damit auf die ästhetischen Qualitäten des Textes, auf die literarische Form konzentrieren.     This paper is a comparative investigation of two kinds of anthropological fieldwork – ethnopoetry and ethnography – made by two authors on the same subject, at the same place and time: the Afro-Brazilian temple Casa das Minas, in São Luis do Maranhão, in 1981-1982. The analysis focuses on the work of the German writer Hubert Fichte(1935-1986), 'Das Haus der Mina in São Luis do Maranhão (l989), and on the study of the Brazilian anthropologist Sergio FERRETTI, 'Querenbentã de Zomadônu. Etnografia da Casa das Minas do Mamnhão' (1983 and 1996). The comparison of methods and results reveals, on the one hand, advantages of the ethnopoetical approach in the art of interview, priority given to the informants' discourse, and the interpretation of religious rituals, from a general point of view. On the other hand, the special qualities of the ethnographical approach are the theoretical understanding and the didactic transmission of the other culture, combined with the translation of basic concepts through a glossary. – See also, in this number of Pandaemonium Germanicum, Sergio Ferretti's complementary article on "Ethnography and Ethnopoetry". Este trabalho investiga que tipo de conhecimentos específicos proporciona a antropologia poética ou etnopoesia, de Hubert FICHTE (1935-1986) em comparação com a etnografia atual. Para tanto, são analisados contrastivamente o Lvro de FICHTE, 'Das Haus der Mina in São Luiz de Maranhão' (1989), e o estudo do antropologo Sergio FERRETTI, 'Querebentã de Zomadônu. Etnografia da Casa das Minas do Maranhão' (1983 e 1996) – tendo ambos os autores trabalhado juntos, no mesmo local, sobre o mesmo assunto. Na comparação de métodos e resultados, a etnopoesia leva vantagem quanto à arte da entrevista, à primazia dada ao discurso dos informantes e à interpretação psicossocial dos rituais religiosos que são relacionados com temas de interesse geral.     This essay examines the scientific paradigms on which the last 40 year's research of (German) literature is based. From the year 1968 on – the turning-point – the lack of unanimity on the legitimation of German studies is discussed. A single prominent methodological paradigm disappears and the theories become shoot-lined fashions. Since the 1980s these tendencies have been accelerating and there is no longer a centre of orientation. In dem vorliegenden Aufsatz werden die literaturwissenschaftlichen Paradigmen und Tendenzen der letzten 40 Jahre behandelt. Seit dem Jahr 1968, das einen Wendepunkt darstellt, wird darüber diskutiert, inwiefern es keine Einstimmigkeit über die ideelle Legitimation des Faches mehr gibt. Ein führendes methodologisches Paradigma verschwindet und die leitenden Theorien werden im Gegenzug zu Modewellen, die nicht lange anhalten. Seit den 80er Jahren beschleunigen sich die Tendenzen, die sich von einem Orientierungszentrum entfernen.

    People who learn Portuguese usually have difficulties in using two of the most frequent verbs of the Portuguese verbal system: ser and estar. Native speakers of German for example fail to easily identify the differences between these verbs, which are compared with the German verb sein. Our purpose is to describe these verbs, their meaning and function, and also to attempt to find criteria to help learners to identify the differences to use these verbs. Some of the differences can be explained by the speakers experiences and the context. Lerner des Portugiesischen als Fremdsprache haben oft Schwierigkeiten, die zwei häufig gebrauchten Verben des portugiesischen Verbalsystems ser und estar zu verwenden. Deutschsprachige erkennen kaum die Unterschiede zwischen diesen Verben, die im Deutschen oft mit dem Verb sein gleichgesetzt werden, das auch in ähnlichen Strukturen und Situationen vorkommt. In dieser Arbeit beschäftigen wir uns damit, diese Verben in ihrer Funktion und Bedeutung zu beschreiben und versuchen, Kriterien aufzustellen, die dem Lernenden helfen können, diese Unterschiede besser zu verstehen und dadurch die Verben besser anzuwenden. Einige Unterschiede können durch die Erfahrungen des Sprechers und durch den Kontext erklärt werden.

    For the learners of Portuguese and German as foreign languages the subjunctive mood represents a learning problem. Based on syntactic and pragmatic categories, the subjunctive is classified in a way that describes its use and permits the comparison between the Portuguese subjuntivo and the German Konjunktiv. Für Lernende des Portugiesischen bzw. des Deutschen als Fremdsprache stellt der Konjunktiv eine Lernschwierigkeit dar. Ausgehend von syntaktischen und pragmatischen Kategorien wird hier versucht, eine Klassifikation des Konjunktivs durchzuführen, die seinen Gebrauch beschreibt und einen Vergleich des portugiesischen subjuntivo mit dem deutschen Konjunktiv ermöglicht.

    Stefan Zweig was the only important German writer who chose Brazil for his exile in the 1940s. Before he committed suicide in Brazil, he wrote the frequently cited and more frequently criticized book in which Brazil is called the land of the future. But in Brazil he also finished another book, 'Die Welt von Gestern', a book of memories, an account of the world from which Zweig came, a work of historic, cultural and political relevance, which was immediately published in Spanish (Argentine) and Portuguese (Brazilian) translations. When compared with the German original, these translations contain significant cuts and modifications, which can be understood as interventions of some kind of censorship, and which are prejudicial to the political brisance of the book. Stefan Zweig foi o único autor relevante de língua alemã que, na decada de quarenta do século passado, escolheu o Brasil para o seu exílio. Neste país ele veio a cometer suicídio. Antes disso escreveu aqui o livro freqüentemente citado e mais freqüentemente criticado em que o Brasil é charnado o país do futuro. Mas foi também no Brasil que Zweig terminou a sua obra 'Die Welt von Gestern', um livro de memorias, uma prestação de contas com o mundo do qual Zweig provinha, urna obra de relevância histórico-cultural e política, que foi imediatamente publicada em traduções para o espanhol (argentino) e o português (brasileiro). Quando comparadas com o original em alemão, estas traduções apresentam cortes e mudanças significativos, que podem ser atribuídos à intervenção de uma censura qualquer e que prejudicam a brisancia política do livro.

    This essay aimes to introduce the German-Jewish Poet Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) to the literary public of Brasil, where she has not been translated and is therefore nearly unknown. Proceeding from the translation of 12 paradigmatic poems, the crucial periods of her life, poetry and poetology are outlined: As her famous college Paul Celan, she was born in Czernovitch this multicultural town of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. An important number of her poems are the result of the intimate relation with her country. The early death of her father and the resulting poverty led her to try to find a new home in New York, but she came back in the period of beginning National Socialism and suffered the persecution of Holocaust. After long years of travelling, she settled down in a Düsseldorf home for elderly Jewish people. The central themes in her poetry are: the loss of country, the Holocaust, and survival in a kind of spiritual country, that is: language and writing. Der vorliegende Aufsatz verfolgt das Ziel, die (hierzulande weitgehend unbekannte, weil unübersetzte) deutsch-jüdische Dichterin Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) dem literaturinteressierten Publikum Brasiliens vorzustellen. Ausgehend von der Übersetzung von zwölf paradigmatischen Gedichten werden die entscheidenden Lebensstationen und Schaffensphasen der Dichterin, die wie Paul Celan im vielsprachigen Czernowitz der österreichisch-ungarischen Donaumonarchie aufwuchs, charakterisiert: Ihre tiefe Verbundenheit mit ihrer galizischen Heimat, ihr früher, vom Tod des Vaters und darauf folgender bitterer Armut erzwungener Versuch, in New York Fuß zu fassen; Rückkehr und Verfolgung in der NS-Zeit; ihre Reisejahre durch Europa auf der Suche nach neuen Wurzeln und schließlich – gezeichnet von Krankheit – ihre letzte Station im jüdischen Altenheim in Düsseldorf. Als zentrale Themen ihres vielfältigen Werks, das in Deutschland in acht Bänden zur Verfugung steht, dürfen gelten: Heimatverlust und -erinnerung, der Holocaust, das Leben in einer geistigen Heimat, dem "Mutterland Sprache".
