    The ways in which Self and Other are represented in fiction play a significant role in the formation of racial and other stereotypes in any culture. This article is a reading of the children's book "The Brave Rabbit in Africa" (1931) by Slovak modernist author Jozef Cíger-Hronský. It attempts to point out and analyse the ways in which racial and national identities are constructed in the written text of the book. Arguably, the story deploys colonialist motifs typical of Western literature in order to appraise the modern, civilized identity of the young Slovak nation.

    Die Vertreibung der Deutschen aus dem Riesengebirge wirkte sich auch auf die Überlieferung der Rübezahl-Sage aus. Im tschechischen Kontext wurde an die Tradition der Vorkriegszeit angeknüpft, in der Rübezahl als Symbol der Region diente, das einerseits die Regionalidentität stärkt, andererseits als eine allgemein verständliche Marke genutzt wird. In diesen Kontexten konnten auch einige Denkmäler der deutschböhmischen Kultur in den tschechischen Kontext inkorporiert werden. Erst in den 70er Jahren setzte sich unter dem Einfluss der Massenmedien die prototypische Darstellung Rübezahls als Märchenheld durch. Zur Stereotypisierung tendierte auch das Bild des Berggeistes in der Erinnerungskultur der Vertriebenen, die sich der alten, sagenhaften Tradition des launischen Dämons bedienten. Beide identitätsbildenden Stereotype standen miteinander in einem Konflikt, der erst nach der Wende schrittweise überwunden wurde. Rübezahl gewann eine zentrale Rolle im touristischen Marketing, wobei breite Darstellungsmöglichkeiten synkretisch variiert werden. ; The expulsion of the Germans from the Riesengebirge effected the tradition of the Rübezahl legend. In the Czech context the tradition of the pre-war period lived on, in which Rübezahl served as a symbol of the region, on the one hand strengthening the regional identity, on the other hand used as a generally understandable brand. Therefore some monuments of German-Bohemian culture could be incorporated into the Czech context. It was not until the 1970s, under the influence of mass media, that the prototypical representation of Rübezahl became a fairy tale hero. The image of the mountain ghost in the remembrance of expellees tended to be stereotyped, too, and to use the ancient, legendary tradition of the moody demon. Both identity-forming stereotypes conflicted with each other, which was gradually overcome only after the "Wende". Rübezahl plays a central role in tourist marketing, and the broad range of representational possibilities leads to varied amalgamations.

    It has been mostly forgotten today that Varlam Shalamov had once identified himself as a passionate supporter of the so-called 'nauchno-khudozhestvennaia literatura'. This term is derived from the Russian term for fiction ('khudozhestvennaia literatura') and can be translated as "scientific-fictional literature" but also as "scientific-artistic literature." Hence all of the advocates of the term, including Shalamov, emphatically insisted not only on the "fictionality" ('khudozhestvennost' '), but also on the "skill" or "art" ('iskusstvo') - the "artistic" qualities - as a fundamental element of the new genre, without which its goals could not be achieved. [.] But what kind of genre was this sort of literature, now mostly forgotten, for which Shalamov had so much hope? To answer this question, Matthias Schwartz reconstrucs the conditions in the late 1920s and early 1930s that motivated Maxim Gorky and the then famous children's book author Samuil Marshak, on the eve of the First All-Union Congress of Soviet Writers, to launch this compound adjective, 'nauchno-khudozhestvennaia literatura', and to create a new type of literature located at the intersection of literary fiction and science journalism. In highlighting the main arguments around this literature, Schwartz elaborates how difficult and disputed its constitution was in the course of the gradual establishment of Socialist Realism as the singular aesthetic doctrine for literary production and why it did not succeed in establishing itself as a separate literary genre until the postwar period. In the last section Schwartz analyzes the characteristics of one of the most emblematic works written in this literary field before briefly returning to a more generalizing conclusion and taking a look at the modest afterlife of the genre since the Thaw period.

    It has often been claimed that the journalist Platonov reproduced the idea of ‘immortality’ which belonged to the soviet topos of ‘new man’ and that the poet Platonov contradicted the journalist by making this idea ridiculous. Such an overly complicated understanding of Platonov’s work can be replaced by a simpler explanation: An analysis of several of his texts shows that the young and the elder Platonov, the poet and the journalist were unanimously in favour of a certain concept of ‘immortality’, that simply did not fit into the then-mainstream topos of ‘new man’. This first part of the study explains how Platonov rejected the fantastic notion of ‘immortality’ that dominated the corresponding discussions in soviet intellectual life in the decade after 1917. The second part analyses Platonov’s relationship to the stalinist version of ‘new man’ and its specific variant of ‘immortality’.

    This is the second and final part of the analysis of Platonov’s work with regard to the idea of ‘immortality’. The first part has revealed that Platonov preferred ‘collective immortality’ thus rejecting the then-mainstream topos of ‘new man’. The second part deals with the stalinist trend to turn all ideas into ideologies: the topos of ‘new man’ as well as the concept of ‘collective immortality’. An analysis of several fictional texts shows that Platonov, while remaining true to his concept of ‘collective immortality’, resisted its ideologisation by tying his concept to characters who struggle for their individuation and yet recognize their relativity in the collective of all people.
