    Health plays an important role in the labor market. Human capital accumulation, occupational choice, hours, wages, turnover, and retirement are all both causes and consequences of health. Better health leads to higher productivity, and healthy individuals can spend more time on the labor market. Yet, at the same time, health itself is also a function of past labor outcomes. High earners may have access to better health care and can afford better nutrition and housing. However, more income and working hours often come at the expense of psychological stress, which in turn can decrease future performance measures. This complex interdependency between health and labor makes it difficult to isolate causal mechanisms. Nevertheless, understanding them is crucial to design cost-effective policies that target workforce health. In this thesis I present three papers which use causal identification strategies and big administrative datasets to shed light on some of the mechanisms briefly discussed above.

    Maternity leave policies are designed to safeguard the health of pregnant workers and their unborn children. However, little is known about the impact of existing policies, which are not evidence-based. We evaluate a maternity leave extension in Austria, which increased mandatory leave from 6 to 8 weeks prior to birth. We exploit that the eligibility for the extended leave was determined by a cutoff due date. Our estimates capture a reduction of in utero exposure to maternal stress caused by work in the third trimester of pregnancy. We find no evidence for significant effects of this extension on children's health at birth or long-term health and labor market outcomes. Subsequent maternal health and fertility are also unaffected. We conclude that, for workers without problems in pregnancy, mandatory maternity leave should not start prior to the 35th week of gestation.

    Mit der Einführung des Tonfilms Ende der Zwanzigerjahre veränderte sich die Filmindustrie tiefgreifend. So befand sich unter anderem die Internationalität, die man dem Stummfilm zuschrieb, durch die Hinzufügung des gesprochenen Wortes an einem kritischen Punkt. Neue Praktiken wurden entworfen und erprobt, um mit dieser veränderten medialen Situation umzugehen und die internationale Distribution von Filmen weiterhin zu gewährleisten. Jessica Berry untersucht eine Praxis der internationalen Verbreitung von Spielfilmen, die für einige Jahre von großer Bedeutung war: die Produktion von Sprachversionen. Hierbei wurde ein Film nicht nur in einer Sprache, sondern von Grund auf – Szene für Szene – in mehreren Sprachen gedreht. In detaillierten Fallstudien analysiert Berry vier solcher Filmpaare, deren Versions-Verfahrensweisen jeweils sehr unterschiedlich sind – Josef von Sternbergs Der Blaue Engel (1930), Wilhelm Thieles Die Drei von der Tankstelle (1930), Georg Wilhelm Pabsts Dreigroschenoper (1931) und Paul Fejos’ Sonnenstrahl (1933). Die Auswahl der Filmpaare zeigt die Vielfalt dieser Produktionspraxis, und die Erschließung der Reaktionen in Zeitschriften und Zeitungen der jeweiligen Länder stellt nationale Spezifika der Rezeption der Versionen im jeweiligen kulturellen Umfeld dar. Diese fundierte Analyse wirft ein neues Licht auf eine damals verbreitete Praxis und leistet einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Filmhistoriografie. Die Auseinandersetzung mit den Grundtendenzen des filmtheoretischen Diskurses der 1920er- und frühen 30er-Jahre bildet dabei den Rahmen für die Untersuchung.

Student fixed effects models using 10 million PSAT-retakers show hotter school days in years before the test reduce scores, with extreme heat being particularly damaging. Weekend and summer heat has little impact, suggesting heat directly disrupts learning time. New nationwide measures of school air-conditioning imply such infrastructure largely offsets heats effects and passes simple benefit-cost tests. Without air-conditioning, a 1°F hotter school year reduces that years learning by one percent. Hot school days disproportionately impact minority students, accounting for roughly five percent of the racial achievement gap.

    Variations in the use of medical resources, both across and within geographical regions, have been widely documented. In this paper we explore physician practice styles as a possible determinant of these variations. In particular, we exploit patient mobility between physicians to identify practice styles among general practitioners (GPs) in Austria. We use a large administrative data set containing detailed information on a battery of different healthcare services, and implement a model with additive patient and GP fixed effects that allows flexibly for systematic differences in patients' health states. We find that, while GPs explain a relatively small part of the overall variation in medical expenses, heterogeneities in spending patterns among GPs are substantial. Conditional on patient characteristics, we document a difference of e751.47 per patient per year in total medical expenses (which amounts to roughly 45% of the sample mean) between high- and low-spending GPs.

    Only half of SAT-takers retake the exam, with even lower retake rates among low income and underrepresented minority (URM) students. We exploit discontinuous jumps in retake probabilities at multiples of 100, driven by left-digit bias, to estimate retaking's causal effects. Retaking substantially improves SAT scores and increases four-year college enrollment rates, particularly for low income and URM students. Eliminating disparities in retake rates could close up to 10 percent of the income-based gap and up to seven percent of the race-based gap in four-year college enrollment rates of high school graduates

    Maternity leave policies are presumed to be essential to ensure the health of pregnant workers and their unborn children. However, little is known about the optimal duration of prenatal maternity leave and existing policies are not evidence-based. We evaluate a substantial maternity leave extension in Austria, which increased mandatory leave prior to birth from six to eight weeks. Our estimation strategy exploits that the eligibility for the extended leave was determined by a cutoff due date. As an additional source of exogenous variation, we use information on non-working mothers, who are not eligible for maternity leave. Across estimations, we consistently find no evidence for significant effects of this extension on children's health at birth, subsequent maternal health and fertility, and longterm human capital outcomes of children. Our finding is confirmed by a supplementary cross-country panel analysis.
