    Nicht nur zwischen Heimat und Fremde steht der Chor im Theater, sondern auch zwischen selbstständigem Handeln und Abhängigkeit, zwischen Menschen und Göttern und schließlich zwischen der dargestellten Welt und der Realität der Rezipienten. Am Chor entzündet sich die Frage, wie die Gemeinschaft auftritt. Maria Kuberg untersucht in detaillierten Lektüren chorischer Theaterstücke von Heiner Müller, Botho Strauß, Elfriede Jelinek, Tankred Dorst, Ewald Palmetshofer, Rainald Goetz, Gert Jonke und René Pollesch, wie der Chor in zeitgenössischen deutschsprachigen Theatertexten zur Sprache kommt. Welche Formen nimmt die Chor-Gemeinschaft dabei im Text an? Und wie korrespondieren diese mit der dramatischen Gattung, die doch grundsätzlich die Handlungen Einzelner vorführt? Das sind die leitenden Fragen dieser erhellenden Erkundung des Theaters der Gegenwart, die es als Reflexion über Gemeinschaft profiliert. Dabei operiert die Untersuchung auf drei historischen Ebenen: Chorische Theatertexte aus dem späten 20. und frühen 21. Jahrhundert werden mit einer theatralen Tradition konfrontiert, die bis in die griechische Antike zurückreicht. Zwischen den antiken und den aktuellen Texten vermittelt die philosophisch-ästhetische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Chor, wie sie im 19. Jahrhundert Schiller, A. W. und F. Schlegel, Hegel und Nietzsche führen. Im Zusammenspiel dieser drei Ebenen wird so eine Theorie des Chorischen entwickelt, die Gattungsaspekte und Gemeinschaftstheorien gleichermaßen berücksichtigt und die das ästhetische wie auch das politische Potenzial der untersuchten Texte erschließt.

    The history of industrial films - an orphan genre of twentieth-century cinema composed of government-produced and industrially sponsored movies that sought to achieve the goals of their sponsors, rather than the creative artists involved - seems to have left no trace in filmic cultural discourse. At its height the industrial film industry employed thousands, produced several trade journals and festival circuits, engaged with giants of twentieth-century industry like Shell and AT & T, and featured the talents of iconic actors and directors such as Buster Keaton, John Grierson and Alain Resnais. This is the first full-length book, anthology, and annotated bibliography to analyse the industrial film and its remarkable history. Exploring the potential of the industrial film to uncover renewed and unexplored areas of media studies, this remarkable volume brings together renowned scholars such as Rick Prelinger and Thomas Elsaesser in a discussion of the radical potential and new possibilities in considering the history of this unexplored corporate medium.     David Bowie’s 2015 Blackstar has been understood by critics and fans alike to have a certain valedictory status. For them, perhaps for us, it is a 39-minute and 13-second farewell. A long goodbye. My angle is different. By situating the Bowie/Renck collaboration on “Lazarus” in the context of a meditation on the question once posed by Georg Stanitzek, “Was ist Kommunikation?” I consider the CD and the video as experiments in re-configuration. More specifically, by thinking about the distinctly cinematic iteration of the question of communication (citing here Captain’s “what we have here is … failure to communicate” from Cool Hand Luke) I propose that mediated communication embodies the Ich/Es modality of dialogue disparaged by Martin Buber. What this invites us to consider is whether “Lazarus” in particular isn’t the generation of an audiovisual tombeau from which or out of which communication strains are to be heard. Is it “saying” farewell? Is it “saying” anything? By drawing on Jacques Derrida’s appropriation of the crypt in the work of Abraham and Torok, I propose that “Lazarus” manages (and the feat is neither small nor insignificant) to communicate nothing. In effect, “Lazarus” is the very sound, not of a failure to communicate, but of a “speaking” emptied of what protects it from mediation. Here, Bowie’s gnomic persona assumes a political valence not typically ascribed to it.

    Against the grain of the growing literature on screens, *Screen Genealogies* argues that the present excess of screens cannot be understood as an expansion and multiplication of the movie screen nor of the video display. Rather, screens continually exceed the optical histories in which they are most commonly inscribed. As contemporary screens become increasingly decomposed into a distributed field of technologically interconnected surfaces and interfaces, we more readily recognize the deeper spatial and environmental interventions that have long been a property of screens. For most of its history, a screen was a filter, a divide, a shelter, or a camouflage. A genealogy stressing transformation and descent rather than origins and roots emphasizes a deeper set of intersecting and competing definitions of the screen, enabling new thinking about what the screen might yet become.

    We are not in the world to mention is the title of a somewhat unconventional "introduction to rhetoric". It is not an introduction to its history or system, but exposes the specific question interest of rhetoric. Since antiquity, rhetoric has been asking for the conditions of convinced approval as the basis for survival cooperation. The notorious conflict of rhetoric with philosophy resulted from the different functionalization of this consent: Should it merely be condoned as a concession to the intellectual weakness of people in order to win them for the acceptance of truth claims (Plato), or must one in the convinced consent requirement rather see the actual reason for possible truthfulness (so the sophistry)? This conflict was only decided after Hans Blumenberg, when direct paths to the truth could no longer be philosophically promised seriously. As a result, the rhetorical principle of convinced approval could finally become philosophically an attractive validity principle under conditions of modernity. Therefore, if today something rhetoric makes current, then it is the modernity of this conviction or consent-dependent validity principle. Wir sind nicht auf der Welt um zu schweigen ist der Titel einer etwas unkonventionellen „Einleitung in die Rhetorik“. Sie ist keine Einführung in deren Geschichte oder System, sondern legt das spezifische Frageinteresse der Rhetorik frei. Seit der Antike fragt die Rhetorik nach den Bedingungen überzeugter Zustimmungsnötigung als Basis überlebensnotwendiger Kooperation. Der notorische Konflikt der Rhetorik mit der Philosophie resultierte aus der unterschiedlichen Funktionalisierung dieser Zustimmungsnötigung: Soll sie bloß als Konzession an die intellektuelle Schwäche von Menschen geduldet werden, um sie so für die Akzeptanz von Wahrheitsansprüchen zu gewinnnen (so Platon), oder muss man in der überzeugten Zustimmungsnötigung vielmehr den eigentlichen Grund möglicher Wahrheitsgeltung sehen (so die Sophistik)? Entschieden wurde dieser Konflikt nach Hans Blumenberg erst, als sich direkte Wege zur Wahrheit philosophisch nicht mehr seriös versprechen ließen. Dadurch konnte das rhetorische Prinzip überzeugter Zustimmungsnötigung endlich auch philosophisch zu einem attraktiven Geltungsprinzip unter Bedingungen der Moderne werden. Wenn daher heute etwas Rhetorik aktuell macht, dann ist es die Modernität dieses überzeugungs- bzw. zustimmungsabhängigen Geltungsprinzips.

    This important and first-of-its-kind collection addresses the emerging challenges in the field of media art preservation and exhibition, providing an outline for the training of professionals in this field. Since the emergence of time-based media such as film, video and digital technology, artists have used them to experiment with their potential. The resulting artworks, with their basis in rapidly developing technologies that cross over into other domains such as broadcasting and social media, have challenged the traditional infrastructures for the collection, preservation and exhibition of art. Addressing these challenges, the authors provide a historical and theoretical survey of the field, and introduce students to the challenges and difficulties of preserving and exhibiting media art through a series of first-hand case studies.
