    Connections of personality and career success factors like obtained wages are well documented. Important cognitive wage-related outcomes such as wage expectations or the acceptance wage, i.e., the minimum acceptable wage for individuals to take on a job, are neglected by empirical research. This study proposes an integrated theoretical framework of personality effects on obtained, expected, and accepted wages. We empirically test this framework using the German PASS survey data (N = 5.636) of working age that contains personality measures as well as wage measures. We replicate previous studies that showed direct effects of extraversion and neuroticism on obtained wages. Extending this causal chain to expected and accepted wages, we demonstrate that both personality traits are associated with expected and accepted wages trough an indirect effect via obtained wages. For extraversion, however not for neuroticism, we show that even when controlling for obtained wage, a direct effect of this personality trait on expected and accepted wages prevails. We discuss the results in terms of relationships of personality to exaggerated wage expectations and extraversion.

    This paper studies if workers infer from correlation about causal effects in the context of the part-time wage penalty. Differences in hourly pay between full-time and part-time workers are strongly driven by worker selection and systematic sorting. Ignoring these selection effects can lead to biased expectations about the consequences of working part-time on wages ('selection neglect bias'). Based on representative survey data from Germany, I document substantial misperceptions of the part-time wage gap. Workers strongly overestimate how much part-time workers in their occupation earn per hour, whereas they are approximately informed of mean full-time wage rates. Consistent with selection neglect, those who perceive large hourly pay differences between full-time and part-time workers also predict large changes in hourly wages when a given worker switches between full-time and part-time employment. Causal analyses using a survey experiment reveal that providing information about the raw part-time pay gap increases expectations about the full-time wage premium by factor 1.7, suggesting that individuals draw causal conclusions from observed correlations. De-biasing respondents by informing them about the influence of worker characteristics on observed pay gaps mitigates selection neglect. Subjective beliefs about the part-time/full-time wage gap are predictive of planned and actual transitions between full-time and part-time employment, necessitating the prevention of causal misperceptions.

    Using detailed data from a unique survey of high school graduates in Germany, we document a gender gap in expected full-time earnings of more than 15%. We apply a regression-compatible Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition and find that especially differences in coefficients help explain the gap. In particular, the effects of having time for family as career motive and being first-generation college student are associated with large penalties in female wage expectations exclusively. This is especially true for higher expected career paths. Resulting expected returns to education are associated with college enrollment of women and could thus entrench subsequent gaps in realized earnings.

    This paper presents evidence from a large-scale study on gender differences in expected wages before labor market entry. Based on data for over 15,000 students, we document a significant and large gender gap in wage expectations that resembles actual wage differences, prevails across subgroups, and along the entire distribution. Over the life-cycle this gap amounts to roughly half a million Euros. Our findings further suggest that expected wages relate to expected asking and reservation wages and that a difference in plans about "boldness" during prospective wage negotiations pertains to gender difference in expected and actual wages. Given the importance of wage expectations for labor market decisions, household bargaining, and wage setting, our results provide an explanation for persistent gender inequalities.

To identify the impact of news on expectations, I exploit Foxconn’s unexpected announcement to build a manufacturing plant in Racine County. Exposure to positive news leads to an increase in expected salary growth at the current firm. Individuals also revise their expectations about outside offers upward, anchoring their beliefs to Foxconn's announced wages. They act on their updated beliefs with a small increase in current consumption. Negative news from a scaled-down plan leads to a revision of expectations back toward baseline.

    I show that workers update expectations about job search and salary growth when exposed to labor market news. To identify the impact of news on expectations, I exploit Foxconn's announcement to build a large production plant in Racine County, Wisconsin. Exposure to positive news leads to an increase in expected salary growth at the current firm, with no discernible differences between workers who are optimistic about receiving any outside offer in the future and those who are not. This suggests that firms and workers bargain frequently over wages, even in the absence of an outside job offer. Moreover, I find that individuals revise their expectations about potential outside wage offers upward, anchoring their beliefs in Foxconn's publicly announced wages. Investigating whether individuals act on their updated beliefs, I find evidence that exposure to the news leads to a small increase in current consumption. Using Foxconn's later announcement of a scaled down version of the initial investment plan, I find that individuals revise their expectations back toward baseline.
