    Joan Robinson’s infatuation with Mao’s China remains the most controversial episode of the Cambridge economist’s life. Drawing on the literatures on observation in science and economics, and economists’ travels, we aim at overcoming the dichotomy between Robinson as a ‘political pilgrim’ and as a ‘development economist’. Instead, we take a closer look at her observation practices, her literary choices, and her position within different political and intellectual communities. The structure of the paper is quasi-chronological: each trip to China is described in its own right, but also treated as an entry point to shed light on a particular aspect of Robinson’s engagement with the country.

    Eine Geschichte der literarischen Entdeckung der Zeit als einer eigenständigen, zugleich abstrakten und lebensbestimmenden Größe. Über Zeit haben die Gelehrten seit der Antike nachgedacht. Erst im späten Mittelalter aber wird das, was zunächst eher theoretische Dimensionen hatte, zu einer alle Lebens- und Weltbereiche durchdringenden Größe. Zeitliche Semantiken und Erscheinungsformen nehmen markant zu. Es kommt zu einer umfassenden Temporalisierung. Die Zeit wird zu einer eigenen, gegenständlichen Kategorie, einer anthropologischen Denkfigur und Denkgewohnheit, einem zentralen Aspekt lebensweltlicher Erfahrung. Das Buch verfolgt diesen Prozess an drei Bereichen der mitteleuropäischen Literatur und Kultur: Reisetexte lassen erkennen, wie sich Zeiterfahrungen von Raumstrukturen lösen. Lebensbeschreibungen zeigen die Zeit als eine Kraft und Gegenkraft, die das individuelle Dasein umtreibt. Texte zu den letzten Dingen eröffnen Einblicke in die Ausdifferenzierung des Zeitlichen. Im Ganzen wird sichtbar, wie zwischen dem 14. und dem 16. Jahrhundert im Schnittpunkt von Lebens- und Weltzeit, heilsgeschichtlicher und profaner, empfundener und gemessener Zeit, Vergangenheitsbezug, Gegenwartsgestaltung und Zukunftserwartung die Zeit in wachsendem Maße das Denken und Handeln bestimmt.

It involves manuscript materials for two Wordsworth texts (early 'Prelude' material and 'Home at Grasmere') which are both about the importance of place to the writing of poetry ð either in escaping from a hostile environment through writing poetry that draws on memories of place, or in celebrating a final home-coming to the Lakes. All original manuscript materials are held at Dove Cottage, Grasmere. By putting the manuscript materials online we want to open up an understanding of the relationship between actual physical place (today) and imagined, textual space in the content of the poem and the making of the manuscript. We would like visitors to the actual site, and to the virtual site to be given a new way of understanding this relationship by means of our project.'

    This edited collection poses crucial questions about the relationship between gender and genre in travel writing, asking how gender shapes formal and thematic approaches to the various generic forms employed to represent and recreate travel. While the question of the genre of travel writing has often been debated (is it a genre, a hybrid genre, a sub-genre of autobiography?), and recent years have been much attention to travel writing and gender, these have rarely been combined. This book sheds light on how the gendered nature of writing and reading about travel affect the genre choices and strategies of writers, as well as the way in which travel writing is received. It reconsiders traditional and frequently studied forms of travel writing, both European and non-European. In addition, it pursues questions about the connections between travel writing and other genres, such as the novel and films, minor forms including journalism and blogging, and new sub-genres such as the ‘new nature writing’; focusing in particular on the political ramifications of genre in travel writing. The collection is international in focus with discussions of works by authors from Europe, Asia, Australia, and both North and South America; consequently, it will be of great interest to scholars and historians in those regions.
