This paper describes changes that occurred in the Brazilian tertiary education system considering information from household surveys and from administrative data collected by the Ministry of Education. A movement toward democratizing access occurred especially in public universities and in the period 2005-2015. As a result, a higher share of government investment in public universities has reached socially worse-off strata, and the public investments in tertiary education no longer contribute to increase income inequality.

This study investigates the pattern of overeducation among Brazilian graduates between 1980 and 2010. Making use of information from the last four population censuses, estimates show that changes in workers’ demographic characteristics and shifts in the workers’ distribution across fields of study represent around 30% of the 10 percentage points increase in the rate of overeducation verified during this three decades period. Although the distribution of workers across fields of study played an important role, the increase in the rate of overeducation would be substantial even if the workers’ profile remained fixed at the 1980 level, when a quite small share of the Brazilian population had a graduate degree.

We study whether female students benefit from being taught by female professors, and whether such gender match effects differ by class size. We use administrative records of a German public university, covering all programs and courses between 2006 and 2018. We find that gender match effects on student performance are sizable in smaller classes, but do not exist in larger classes. This difference suggests that direct and frequent interactions between students and professors are important for the emergence of gender match effects. Instead, the mere fact that one's professor is female is not sufficient to increase performance of female students.

This paper analyzes the relationship between higher education and body weight and smoking behavior among women in Turkey. We exploit the largely exogenous and substantial increase in the openings of universities throughout Turkey. Based on the spatial and temporal variability of university openings, we construct college accessibility measures at the level of the city of residence when the woman turned 17 years of age to serve as instruments for college enrollment. The college accessibility measures have a substantial 5 percentage-point (about 80%) impact on the probability of college enrollment, and we show they also impact lower levels of schooling, likely through expectations. Using the college accessibility measures as instruments for college enrollment, we find that a one percentage point increase in the probability of college enrollment reduces BMI by about 0.21% and the probability of being classified as obese by 0.44 percentage points. Regarding smoking, we find that a similar increase in the probability of college enrollment increases the probability of being a current smoker by 0.73 to 1.1 percentage points. Both results contrast with previous findings for Turkey and other countries, likely denoting heterogeneities in the level of schooling considered (primary or secondary versus tertiary) and in the level of economic development of these countries.

Cross-country differences in the gender gap of higher education attainment are large. In this paper, we study the role of gender norms for this particular gender gap. To isolate the effect of gender norms from institutional and economic factors, we investigate the decisions of second-generation immigrants in the United States to achieve at least a bachelor's degree. We measure gender norms using economic outcomes as well as beliefs prevailing in the migrants' parents' country of origin. We find that gender norms explain part of the observed differences in the gender gap in attaining at least a bachelor's degree. There is also a sizable effect of gender norms on gender gaps in higher educational attainment levels, such as a master's degree or a PhD. We confirm the gender norms effect using a sample of siblings, which allows us to hold unobservable and observable household characteristics constant.

Drawing on data from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), we show that students who select majors that do not match their occupational preferences prior to enrolling in university are more likely to drop out than those who do choose majors that match their occupational preferences. Our findings suggest that this gap cannot be explained by institutional obstacles to entering a major. Instead, the primary mechanisms behind this phenomenon are indecisiveness and preference changes.

This paper analyses the role of tertiary education on rural development. Using census data on villages in India for 2011, we find that skilled workers have had an important impact on rural prosperity. A 1 percentage point rise in the share of the village population with tertiary education raises per capita consumption by around 7.2 per cent. Our results are robust to alternative measures of income and are not confounded by better institutions. Among the mechanisms at work, we find that households with tertiary-educated members register higher agricultural gross income per unit of land. Their contribution to agriculture is also suggested by satellite-based spatial net primary productivity measures. We inform the larger literature on structural transformations and contend that such transformations can also happen within rural areas.

This paper seeks to analyze labor earnings differences between workers with bachelor's degree and those with secondary education taking into account the heterogeneity across fields of study in the former group. Labor earnings differentials are decomposed to quantify the contribution of three main factors associated with tertiary education: general skill acquired in the program, access to higher-paying occupations, and the match between skills acquired and occupation requirements. According to the results, those three elements play important roles. Evidence also indicates that individuals with a bachelor's degree, whatever their fields of study, have larger labor earnings than lower educated ones, on average, even when their occupations do not require higher education and are weakly related to skills acquired during tertiary studies.
