From the patricians of the early republic to post-Reconstruction racial scientists, from fin de siècle progressivist social reformers to post-war sociologists, character, that curiously formable yet equally formidable "stuff," has had a long and checkered history giving shape to the American national identity.Bodies of Reform reconceives this pivotal category of nineteenth-century literature and culture by charting the development of the concept of "character" in the fictional genres, social reform movements, and political cultures of the United States from the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century. By reading novelists such as Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman alongside a diverse collection of texts concerned with the mission of building character, including child-rearing guides, muscle-building magazines, libel and naturalization law, Scout handbooks, and success manuals, James B. Salazar uncovers how the cultural practices of representing character operated in tandem with the character-building strategies of social reformers. His innovative reading of this archive offers a radical revision of this defining category in U.S. literature and culture, arguing that character was the keystone of a cultural politics of embodiment, a politics that played a critical role in determining-and contesting-the social mobility, political authority, and cultural meaning of the raced and gendered body

The present paper proposes an overview of the existing literature covering several aspects related to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. Specifically, we consider studies describing and evaluating ESG methodologies and those studying the impact of ESG on credit risk, debt and equity costs, or sovereign bonds. We further expand the topic of ESG research by including the strand of the literature focusing on the impact of climate change on financial stability, thus allowing us to also consider the most recent research on the impact of climate change on portfolio management.

The biological features of human beings are now measured, observed, and understood in ways never before thought possible, defining norms, establishing standards, and determining average values of human life. While the notion of "biopolitics" has been linked to everything from rational decision-making and the democratic organization of social life to eugenics and racism, Thomas Lemke offers the very first systematic overview of the history of the notion of biopolitics, exploring its relevance in contemporary theoretical debates and providing a much needed primer on the topic. Lemke explains that life has become an independent, objective and measurable factor as well as a collective reality that can be separated from concrete living beings and the singularity of individual experience. He shows how our understanding of the processes of life, the organizing of populations and the need to "govern" individuals and collectives lead to practices of correction, exclusion, normalization, and disciplining. In this lucidly written book, Lemke outlines the stakes and the debates surrounding biopolitics, providing a systematic overview of the history of the notion and making clear its relevance for sociological and contemporary theoretical debates

The trend to incorporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) matters into corporate boardrooms and capital markets is pervasive. Nevertheless, considerable uncertainty exists over what ESG is, how it should be implemented, and its financial and nonfinancial impacts on corporate outcomes and fund performance. In this Closer Look, we explore seven commonly accepted myths surrounding ESG, many of which are not supported by empirical evidence. We ask: • What is ESG expected to solve: short-termism by corporate managers or a deeper problem of corporations profiting at the expense of stakeholders?• Does ESG increase corporate value, or does it represent an incremental cost incurred for society?• How much ESG investment is new (incremental) investment, and how much repackaging of existing spending?• Why is governance included as the G in ESG?• Is it possible to develop a reliable measure of ESG quality?• Can standardized ESG reporting be done in an informative and cost-effective manner?

This paper explores a granular database from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Green Bond Transparency Platform covering the issuance of 430 corporate and sovereign Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) bonds in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) that are outstanding in international markets. The goal was to investigate how the creation of a sovereign ESG reference yield curve can boost the private ESG bond market. Using a difference-in-differences (DID) approach, we empirically estimate that the creation of a sovereign ESG reference curve roughly leads to a 60 percent increase in the volume of corporate bond issuances and a 25 percent increase in the number of ESG corporate bond issuances in the external markets after three years. On the mechanisms, we argue that the sovereign ESG reference yield curve works as a benchmark for private sector ESG bond issuers by providing a standard against which the performance of ESG bonds can be measured.

Shareholder say-on-pay votes allow institutional investors to influence the incentives of managers and, consequently, corporate behaviour. Surprisingly, the preferences of investors on executive compensation have been largely overlooked in the ongoing debates on sustainable corporate behaviour. Institutional investors can either entrench the primacy of shareholder interests by demanding companies to link executive pay stronger to metrics associated with shareholder wealth maximisation or promote a more sustainable governance model by encouraging rewarding executives for reducing the company’s negative footprint on its key stakeholders. The analysis of investor disclosed explanations of say-on-pay votes in the FTSE 100 companies during 2013-2021 shows that institutional investors rely repeatedly on several dominant themes and that shareholder interests remain the core focus of say-on-pay votes. Additionally, most investors can be grouped into several clusters formed around the voting recommendations of proxy advisors. A group of UK-based institutional investors stands out by taking more individualistic and diverse approach to the stewardship of executive compensation. These findings highlight the role of local investors in the oversight of executive pay, the growing influence of proxy advisors along with the increasing share of foreign institutional investors, and the influence of best practice governance codes in driving investor stewardship preferences
