    In 2013, a boy with special needs used the video game Minecraft to deliver the sermon at his bar mitzvah at a Reform synagogue, an apparently unique ritual phenomenon to this day. Using a narrative inquiry approach, this article examines two rabbis’ negotiations with new media, leading up to, during, and upon reflection after the event. The article explores acceptance, innovation, and validation of new media in religious practice, drawing on Campbell’s (2010) framework for negotiation of new media in religious communities. Clergy biography, philosophy, and institutional context all impact the negotiations with new media. By providing context of a set of factors influencing a particular negotiation and validation of a ritual and educational innovation using new media, the article intends to demonstrate the importance of clergy narrative for understanding new media negotiations in religious settings, and in particular in progressive religious communities

    We develop a new model of how human agency-detection capacities and other socio-cognitive biases are involved in forming religious beliefs. Crucially, we distinguish general religious beliefs (such as God exists) from personal religious beliefs that directly refer to the agent holding the belief or to her peripersonal time and space (such as God appeared to me last night). On our model, people acquire general religious beliefs mostly from their surrounding culture; however, people use agency-intuitions and other low-level experiences to form personal religious beliefs. We call our model the Interactive Religious Experience Model (IREM). IREM inverts received versions of Hyperactive Agency-Detection Device Theory (HADD Theory): instead of saying that agency-intuitions are major causes of religious belief in general, IREM says that general belief in supernatural agents causes people to seek situations that trigger agency-intuitions and other experiences, since these enable one to form personal beliefs about those agents. In addition to developing this model, we (1) present empirical and conceptual difficulties with received versions of HADD Theory, (2) explain how IREM incorporates philosophical work on indexical belief, (3) relate IREM to existing anthropological and psychological research, and (4) propose future empirical research programs based on IREM.

    Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding (2019) imagines a post-apocalyptic future in which the United States has been broken apart into isolated, individualist communities. Players assume the role of Sam Bridges, a courier for the seemingly ubiquitous Bridges corporation, who is tasked with reunifying the country by linking the cloistered settlements to the Chiral Network, allowing communication and the sharing of resources between those connected to it. In Death Stranding, the themes of control and precariousness resonate through both semiotics and procedure. Bridges, as a symbol for the game’s procedural mechanics, asks players to make connections between what Sam is asked to do (by Bridges) and what they are asked to do (by the videogame). Drawing parallels between Bridges and platform capitalism, this paper will examine Death Stranding as an allegorithm, in Alexander Galloway’s terms, to reveal how the game replicates the real world systems of precarization of an emerging class of workers: the precariat. This paper argues that Death Stranding becomes a ritualization of precarious labor and that the playful disposition it engenders provides a starting place to begin reassessing our modes of democratic participation.

    This article is dedicated to the symbolism of a religious site (the church) and a religious object (the cross) in Christianity in a concrete locality and community. The study was based on Victor Turner's theory of rituals and symbols. I used Turner's definitions and classifications of symbols as well as his theses related to rituals. My aim was to demonstrate that the church and the cross can be categorised as dominant symbols in Christianity, even though they bear distinct characteristics of dominant symbols. The data analysed in the present text were collected by the ethnographic interview and participant observation methods during ethnographic field research. The research was conducted in eastern Slovakia, in a village in which the majority of residents are affiliated with the Greek Catholic faith. Building on the analysis of ethnographic data, I will demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of Turner's theory of symbols. During the analysis, I will suggest possible answers, stemming mainly from cognitive anthropology, for certain questions left unanswered by Turner.

    In this article, I argue that Leviticus 16 and early Jewish Day of Atonement traditions have influenced the imagery of the sheep and the goats in Matt 25.31-46. The ritual shading that this judgement scene acquires in light of its use of Yom Kippur imagery fits well into Matthew's overarching interest in moral purity. The drama of moral impurity in the Gospel of Matthew concludes with the Son of Man's eschatological purgation of iniquity from the cosmos in a manner reminiscent of the yearly expulsion of moral impurity from Israel's temple by means of the scapegoat ritual. Building on the insights of scholars who have attempted to demonstrate Matthew's knowledge of Son of Man traditions attested in the Parables of Enoch, this article also contends that Azazel traditions contained in that same Enochic booklet have influenced the portrayal of the goats’ banishment in Matt 25.41, a conclusion that becomes more probable in light of Matthew's unique application of the Asael tradition attested in 1 En. 10.4 at the end of his Parable of the Wedding Feast (Matt 22.13).

    The Psalms were composed for oral performance, and many today believe they should be restored to their performance vitality. “Translation for performance” requires many concepts to be considered, one of which is how the audience (or receptor community) will use the translated text. In the case of translating poetry, these considerations often point to the value of literary-rhetorical translation, which captures the poetical beauty and persuasive power of the original. Also, translating from an oral text and following the form of local poetic genres facilitates ready application of psalms. In this paper, empirical studies illustrate some ways in which psalms have been used recently with communities in South Africa: in corporate worship, in personal prayer, and with sectoral groups. Translators need constantly to keep their eye on the end game, to ensure the translated psalms facilitate a living conversation between people and God, as the ancient poems did.

    This study uncovers a link between sound patterns and ritualistic language in Charles Williams’ novels through an analysis of the relationship between type of sound and content. The study focuses on War in Heaven with a view to conducting a preliminary exploration into this link, and establishing possibilities for future research. Like Williams’ other novels, War in Heaven is saturated with the symbolism and ritual practices he learned in The Fellowship of the Rosy Cross and, potentially, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Williams’ experimentation with sound to convey his experience of ritual is explored through the framework of Roman Jakobson’s “Poetic Function”, to establish how Williams may have intended sound to contribute to the experience of the reader. Using a data driven approach, the study explores how sound patterns work with ritualistic content across War in Heaven, discovering a link between fricative sounds and ritualistic events.

    Resumé Behind the well-known “theological” Abraham in Genesis lies the narrative figure that invites an analysis inspired by sociology and anthropology. Abraham is pictured as a wealthy slave- and cattle-owner, competent in negotiation and trade. In matters concerning economy and kinship Abraham is the moderate mediator between violent extremes. In Mary Douglas’ Grid/Group scheme, Abraham would be equally remote from priestly-hierarchical and deuteronomistic-enclavist ideals. Underneath the pietistic and ethnocentric themes that the Biblical textual process has added to the figure of Abraham, one can still detect a third position, an alternative to temple-ritualism and toreligious zealotry.

    Rituals obviously utilize the human senses. Theological and mystical interpretations frequently comment on sensation as a source of metaphors for religious experience. However, the discourse used in religious rituals themselves usually avoids using the normal vocabulary appropriate to particular sensations, while focusing on ritual performance instead. This raises the question of whether it is generally the case that ritualizing sensation diverts attention from sensation to ritual behavior, and whether ritual interpretations usually divert attention from the sensation to its metaphorical meaning. This essay addresses these questions with the analytical tools of metaphor theory and ritual theory. To test and apply these theories, it focuses on one kind of ritual practices, those that involving written texts, especially books of scripture, and how they use the senses of sight, hearing, and touch.

    This article surveys recent musical innovation at the intersection of Christianity and changing ecological relationships. Drawing on a series of extended interviews carried out in late 2019 and early 2020 with participants involved in the evangelical song-writing project Doxecology, musical aspects of Christian Climate Action protests, the creation of forest church songbooks, and requiems for lost species, the author describes the experiences and concerns of individuals who are currently active in or beginning to explore new forms of musical activity in this area. The article seeks to document the range of motivations, concerns, and issues surrounding recent musical innovation, drawing attention to the diverse nature of the current scene and highlighting the potential importance of musical and ritual activity in negotiating the current climate crisis. The author suggests that music participates in broader inter-religious tensions present in this area while providing an additional space for negotiation, experience, and activity.

    The essay analyses the potential for a negative hermeneutic in liturgical studies, taking as its basis Cyprian Krause's ‘justification of the ritual in the face of the absurd'. It then examines consequent challenges for other theological subjects. The method of negative hermeneutics focusses on the limits of and gaps within the process of sense. This article explores how different aspects of negativity of sense (e.g. formal and content related) can help to study otherwise ignored and liminal aspects of liturgy. A negative hermeneutics of ritual can allow us to read the Christian liturgy as a performance whose power lies in its capacity precisely to unsettle, transform and subvert, rather than merely to authorize, justify and unify.

    Das Ritual der Preisverleihung ist längst ein wichtiges Machtinstrument im Kulturbetrieb geworden. In Deutschland werden jährlich allein über siebenhundert Literaturpreise vergeben. Die Analyse beschäftigt sich mit Struktur, Durchführung und sozialer Wirkung von Preisverleihungen im Allgemeinen. Darüber hinaus wird exemplarisch die bedeutendste Auszeichnung für deutschsprachige Literatur untersucht: der Georg-Büchner-Preis. Im Mittelpunkt stehen u. a. die Geschichte und die jeweilige gesellschaftspolitische Funktion des Büchnerpreises seit 1923 im Zusammenspiel mit der deutschen Geschichte von der Weimarer bis zur Berliner Republik sowie die Bedeutung des Namenspatrons Georg Büchner für die nach ihm benannte Auszeichnung. Auf diese Weise tritt das vielschichtige Portrait eines bedeutenden Impulsgebers im deutschen Kulturleben hervor, dessen politisch-literarischer Doppelcharakter den Büchnerpreis immer wieder zum Politikum gemacht hat. Ausgehend vom ritualwissenschaftlichen Ansatz unternimmt die Analyse mit Hilfe kultursoziologischer Determinanten Pierre Bourdieus den Versuch, den klassischen Methodenkanon der Literaturwissenschaft um ethnologisch-anthropologische und soziologische Denk- und Arbeitsweisen zu erweitern

    Die in der Erforschung und Interpretation antiker Texte lange aufrechterhaltene Trennung von Religion und Literatur in zwei nicht interdependente Sphären ist anachronistisch. Im Falle des griechischen Dramas, untrennbar gebunden an den athenischen Dionysoskult, hat sich die Erkenntnis einer strukturellen Prägung durch den Mythos und das Ritual zwar durchgesetzt, doch bleibt es ein Desiderat, das Interpretationsmodell auf andere Gattungen der griechischen Literatur (Epos, Lyrik, vorsokratisches Lehrgedicht, Geschichtsschreibung, platonischer Dialog, hellenistische Dichtung und Roman) sowie auf vorausgegangene und nachfolgende Schriftkulturen zu übertragen. Auf eine ihrem Schrifttum zugrundeliegende mythisch-rituelle Poetik befragt werden daher die frühen Zivilisationen des Vorderen Orients und Ägyptens ebenso wie die griechisch-römische Mittelmeerkultur unter Roms Vorherrschaft. Die Fragestellung wird zudem ausgeweitet auf Byzanz und die europäischen Tragiker der Moderne. Das zweibändige Werk umfasst die wesentlich erweiterten Beiträge zur Tagung Literatur und Religion: die Griechen, vorher, nachher und heute. Mythisch-rituelle Strukturen im Text (Castelen-Augst bei Basel, 16.-20.03.2005) und zwei zusätzliche Aufsätze. Zugleich bilden die beiden Volumina den Auftakt der neuen Basler altertumswissenschaftlichen Reihe MythosEikonPoiesis

    Der Begriff "Inszenierung" hat in Anlehnung an das französische mettre en scène bzw. mise en scène in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts als Terminus der Theatertheorie in den deutschen Sprachgebrauch Eingang gefunden. Im Anschluss an eine erste Definition wird hier das theatertheoretische Begriffsverständnis als fruchtbarer Ausgangspunkt genutzt, um Inszenierung im Forschungsfeld "Recht und Literatur" zu verstehen. Denn nicht nur Theatertexte können inszeniert werden, auch das Recht wird in Gerichtsverfahren auf die Bühne gebracht. Wie und gegebenenfalls in welcher Form machen sich Recht und Theater die Inszenierungsbegriffe der jeweils anderen Seite zu eigen? Welche Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede prägen diese Begriffe? Und werden Erzählräume von Theater oder Gericht vielleicht sogar durch die Inszenierungsnarrative der jeweils anderen Seite konstitutiv begründet? Um sich diesen Fragen zu nähern, wird hier der Inszenierungsbegriff von den verwandten Konzepten Theatralität, Performativität und Ritual abgegrenzt. ; As a term from theatre studies, the French mettre en scène or mise en scène found its way into German language use as 'Inszenierung' in the first half of the 19th century. Following an initial definition, theatre studies' understanding of the term will be used as a fruitful starting point to comprehend mise-en-scène in the research area of 'law and literature'. For not only dramatic texts can be staged, but the law is also staged in court proceedings. How and, if applicable, in which form do law and theatre make use of each other's notions of mise-en-scène? Which similarities and differences form these notions? And are the narrative spaces of theatre and law perhaps even constitutively founded on the respective other? To approach these questions, the notion of the mise-en-scène will be contrasted with the related concepts of theatricality, performativity and ritual.
