    Existing research has pointed to the decreasing effect of revolutions and wars on income inequality. It is unclear whether this reduction is the result of ongoing changes within countries before revolutions and wars or if the results are standalone effects. In this study, we focus on the case of the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and the subsequent Iran-Iraq war from 1980 to 1988. We use the synthetic control method to study the effect of revolution and war on changes in income inequality levels. Had there been no revolution and war in Iran, how would income inequality have developed? Utilizing the synthetic control method, we created a counterfactual Iran that reproduces the socioeconomic characteristics of Iran before the Islamic revolution. Then we compare the income inequality of the counterfactual Iran, without the revolution and war, to the factual Iran with a new political regime, for the period of 1970-1988. Our results, based on two different indicators of Iran’s Gini, show a statistically significant effect of the revolution and war on reducing income inequality. Over the entire 1979–1988 period, on average and per year, the Gini index of Iran was reduced by approximately 3 times of the standard deviation of this index. The main findings are robust to a series of placebo tests.

    We study the effect of the 2011 Egyptian revolution and its aftermath on migration intentions of the Egyptian youth. We measure revolution intensity using the spacial variation in the number of deaths during the revolution from the Statistical Database of the Egyptian Revolution Wikithawra and combine it with data on migration intentions from the Harmonized Survey of Young People in Egypt (HSYPE). Difference-in-difference estimations show that the revolution significantly decreased the migration intentions of youth, especially young men. Single women did not change their migration intentions, mainly due to their financial dependence. Results also show that the youth living in informal slum areas experienced stronger effects. We describe two opposing channels: the insecurity channel, which positively affects migration intentions, and the optimism channel, which negatively affects migration intentions by inducing hope in a better Egyptian future. Youth in rural and slum areas were more sensitive to the optimism channel, due to their higher threshold of insecurity perception.

    This study examines the causal joint effect of a new political regime and war against Iraq on life expectancy of Iranians for the period 1978–1988 during the revolution and war. I use a synthetic control approach to construct a synthetic Iran based on a weighted average of other Middle East and North Africa ("MENA") and Organization of the Petroleum Exporting (‘OPEC’) countries. The synthetic Iran matches the average level of key pre-revolution life expectancy correlates and the evolution of the factual Iranian life expectancy during the post-revolution period through the end of the war. I find a sizable negative effect of the joint treatment. The results show that in total, an average Iranian has lost an accumulated 62 years of life during the post-revolution period until the end of war with Iraq in 1988. The average annual years of life lost is approximately six years. In other words, in the absence of the revolution and war, an average Iranian’s life expectancy could be approximately six years longer.

    We study the effect of a corruption reflection index on internal conflict in Iran using a novel measure of corruption based on newspaper coverage. We use the Vector Autoregression (VAR) model and its applied tools of impulse response and variance decomposition analyses to track the response of protests to shocks in the level of corruption. Using annual data from 1962 to 2019, we find a positive and significant response of protests to a positive shock in the news-based corruption reflection index. We also show that the main channels where higher corruption may lead to higher internal protests are through economic growth and military spending.

    Scholarly logic holds that revolutionary movements are unlikely to break out in democracies, where citizens may simply remove unpopular leaders through elections. And yet the twenty-first century has witnessed a global series of uprisings against regimes that are nominally democratic-in that they regularly hold competitive elections-but are otherwise deeply broken, run by kleptocratic networks of elites who often fail to deliver vital services. This paper therefore takes on the task of theorizing revolution in democracy, pointing to some of the ways in which these movements differ from well-studied revolutionary movements in consolidated autocracies. We analyse two recent cases-the Tishreen uprising in Iraq (2019-20) and the Lebanese Thawra (2019-20)-and draw on original protest event catalogues constructed from local Arabic-language newspapers. We argue that the decentralized nature of these regimes may paradoxically render the task of deposing them via mass mobilization more difficult. We investigate mechanisms including the difficulty of sustaining a broad anti-regime coalition in the absence of a singular dictator, the ability of elites to offer resignations without fundamentally altering underlying power structures, and the possibility for an array of non-state and semi-state repressive actors to repress protests.

    Die Studie widmet sich der Bildwelt in Walter Benjamins Aufzeichnungen zu Franz Kafka, deren rätselhafte Bilder als Schlüssel zu seiner Kafka-Lektüre verstanden werden. Zentrales Motiv dieser Lektüre ist die Hoffnung, die Benjamin im „Unfertigen und Ungeschickten“ der Figuren Kafkas verwahrt sieht. Das Buch geht diesem Motiv nach, indem es die Zusammenhänge zwischen sprachlichen und materiellen Bildern in den Fokus rückt. Die von Benjamin zur Deutung Kafkas herangezogenen Porträtbildnisse, Stummfilme, asiatischen und expressionistischen Gemälde werden eingehend untersucht. So gelingt der Nachweis, dass im Zentrum von Benjamins bildhaftem, vermeintlich esoterischem Kafka-Studium die Suche nach befreienden Momenten steht. Hundert Jahre nach Kafkas Tod und neunzig Jahre nach dem Erscheinen von Benjamins Kafka-Essay leistet Lees Studie damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Nachleben der Kafka-Texte Benjamins.

What transpired was a war of swords and of pens, waged in newspapers and periodicals, in literature, broadsheets, and fliers. In her analysis of Haitian writing that followed independence, Stieber composes a new literary history of Haiti, that challenges our interpretations of both freedom struggles and the postcolonial. By examining internal dissent during the revolution, Stieber reveals that the very concept of freedom was itself hotly contested in the public sphere, and it was this inherent tension that became the central battleground for the guerre de plume-the paper war-that vied to shape public sentiment and the very idea of Haiti.Stieber's reading of post-independence Haitian writing reveals key insights into the nature of literature, its relation to freedom and politics, and how fraught and politically loaded the concepts of "literature" and "civilization" really are. The competing ideas of liberté, writing, and civilization at work within postcolonial Haiti have consequences for the way we think about Haiti's role-as an idea and a discursive interlocutor-in the elaboration of black radicalism and black Atlantic, anticolonial, and decolonial thought. In so doing, Stieber reorders our previously homogeneous view of Haiti, teasing out warring conceptions of the new nation that continued to play out deep into the twentieth century

By examining internal dissent during the revolution, Stieber reveals that the very concept of freedom was itself hotly contested in the public sphere, and it was this inherent tension that became the central battleground for the guerre de plume-the paper war-that vied to shape public sentiment and the very idea of Haiti.Stieber's reading of post-independence Haitian writing reveals key insights into the nature of literature, its relation to freedom and politics, and how fraught and politically loaded the concepts of "literature" and "civilization" really are. The competing ideas of liberté, writing, and civilization at work within postcolonial Haiti have consequences for the way we think about Haiti's role-as an idea and a discursive interlocutor-in the elaboration of black radicalism and black Atlantic, anticolonial, and decolonial thought. In so doing, Stieber reorders our previously homogeneous view of Haiti, teasing out warring conceptions of the new nation that continued to play out deep into the twentieth century

Dans une période où plusieurs référents politiques et cadres interprétatifs rivalisent pour faire autorité, les manières de dire et de montrer sont loin d'être secondaires et les modalités de désignation et de représentation des martyrs l'illustrent bien. Le conflit autour des processus de fabrique des « martyrs de la révolution », travaillés tant par des enjeux sociaux que sexués, ne se cantonne pas à l'ordre du discours mais se traduit graphiquement dans les différents espaces mémoriels relatifs à la révolution. The study of the competing logics of attribution of the term "martyr" since 2011 makes visible the tensions that organize the narratives and images of the Egyptian revolution. Different circuits of designation and representation of the "martyrs" coexist in Egyptian society, but not without conflict: they compete and confront one another, each referring to a singular idea of justice as well as a precise definition of the enemy, the one toward whom legitimate violence is conceivable and possible. Conflicts around the "martyrs" of the Egyptian revolution, which are shaped by social as well as gendered considerations, are not confined to the order of discourse, but are also translated visually into the different memorial spaces and iconographic performances relating to the revolution.

    Die Studie widmet sich der Bildwelt in Walter Benjamins Aufzeichnungen zu Franz Kafka, deren rätselhafte Bilder als Schlüssel zu seiner Kafka-Lektüre verstanden werden. Zentrales Motiv dieser Lektüre ist die Hoffnung, die Benjamin im „Unfertigen und Ungeschickten“ der Figuren Kafkas verwahrt sieht. Das Buch geht diesem Motiv nach, indem es die Zusammenhänge zwischen sprachlichen und materiellen Bildern in den Fokus rückt. Die von Benjamin zur Deutung Kafkas herangezogenen Porträtbildnisse, Stummfilme, asiatischen und expressionistischen Gemälde werden eingehend untersucht. So gelingt der Nachweis, dass im Zentrum von Benjamins bildhaftem, vermeintlich esoterischem Kafka-Studium die Suche nach befreienden Momenten steht. Hundert Jahre nach Kafkas Tod und neunzig Jahre nach dem Erscheinen von Benjamins Kafka-Essay leistet Lees Studie damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Nachleben der Kafka-Texte Benjamins.

    The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between individuals' satisfaction with amenities and environmental quality and taste for revolt in the Middle East. Using recent World Value Survey data (WVS7, 2017-2021) from Egypt and Iraq (which have been experiencing severe environmental degradation and inadequate and mismanagement of public infrastructure) and applying Probit regressions, our results show that satisfaction with amenities and environmental quality indicators are negatively and statistically related to individuals' inclination towards revolt in both countries. This finding is more pronounced in urban areas, particularly in large cities. We also find that individuals' satisfaction with amenities and environmental quality affect the taste of revolt through the individual's life satisfaction and satisfaction with the government's provision of utilities. The analysis for Egypt suggests that satisfaction with public transportation systems, roads and highways, air quality, and housing quality are significantly and negatively associated with support for revolutionary action. For the Iraq sample, we find that dissatisfaction with roads and highways, water quality, school quality, and the physical settings of cities lead to a higher probability of support for uprising.

A Theological Essay on Categories, Types and Interactions of Christian and Secular Interpretations of the Present with Regard to its Future]People are prone to no small measure of hope – waiting for the things to come. And so it happens frequently, that they make their present the staging point to envision, expect and hope for their predictions of the future. These visions then reflect anticipation or fear onto their present. Will things improve? Or will even the direst of forecasts be yet exceeded?This essay deals with these predictions of the future in their great plurality, be they utopias, apocalypses or teleologies. The manifold repercussions of these visions and expectations on the present are discussed. Subsequently, the theological possibilities of a Christian understanding as well as Christian answers to the questions at hand will be addressed. It remains to be seen whether this question about the future of being human must elicit a fearful response, or rather a more cheerful one. Considering that for the faithful the future is the place from which in particular God may approach us full of promise.
