    A (re-)turn to ethics, which began in the 1980s and 1990s and is still predominant today, has been ascribed to literary studies and theory. I discuss theoretical issues within ethics based on the examples of literary analyses against this cultural background. The authors examined are Margaret Atwood, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Robert M. Pirsig. The main questions concern the foundation on which ethical concepts are based, and the way in which such concepts function. These topics are evidently connected to matters of human concepts and human nature in general. Such concepts are understood to be fundamentally communicative in the following. Communication should encompass the whole communicative act as a way of understanding, perceiving, feeling, and living. Contrary to popular conclusions of relativity, the need for a realist foundation of ethics – understood as implying universal validity – will be revealed. It is not only possible, but also necessary to develop such an idea of ethics within a postmodern relativist framework. I will thus argue for a communicative foundationalist ethics. With regard to literature an increasing emergence of first-person narrative can be witnessed in addition to a new focus on a realist and more mimetic style after a peak of pluralist conceptions at the end of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first centuries. The analysis of such narrative situations will reveal the significance of the narrative generation of individual personalities for an understanding of ethical questions. The conflict between relativist and realist points of view centers on the postmodern critique of the individual. The study of the literary generation of individuals will elucidate means of confronting this critique. Such research concerns the question how literature and theory are relevant to the ethical matters of human life. James Phelan has developed a concept of ethics as rhetoric based on the work of Wayne C. Booth, Adam Zachary Newton, Gérard Genette, and Mikhail Bakhtin. Following Phelan, I understand narratives to be instances of human communication, which is organized narratively. I am therefore seeking communicative moral foundations for a narrative ethical concept that underlies moral actions. The theoretical background includes the poststructuralist and communicative concepts of Judith Butler and Seyla Benhabib as well as Ernst Tugendhat's analytical approach. ; Viele Theoretiker haben in der späten Postmoderne zur Ethik als zentrales Forschungsfeld (zurück)gefunden. Auch im soziohistorischen Umfeld als Ganzem haben moralische Sachverhalte eine signifikante Renaissance erlebt. Ein Blick auf die Entwicklung des heutigen kulturellen Terrains zeigt eine sehr starke Fokussierung auf ethische Fragen (durch die Bildung von Organisationen, das Auftreten moralischer Fragen im öffentlichen Diskurs, etc.). Zudem ist eine verstärkte Hinwendung zu Religion und alternativen Sinnfindungsmethoden in den westlichen Gesellschaften zu beobachten. In der gesamten kulturellen Produktion und deren kritischer Bearbeitung ist Immanuel Kants berühmte Frage 'Was soll ich tun?' wieder en vogue. Literaturkritiker sprechen z.B. von einer moralischen Wende der Postmoderne, die in neuerer Zeit generell als 'ethical turn' in den Geisteswissenschaften bezeichnet wird. Man darf vielleicht sogar behaupten, dass Ethik das herausragende theoretische Thema der späten Postmoderne ist. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich basierend auf einigen detaillierten Literaturuntersuchungen mit theoretischen Fragen zur Moral. Analysiert werden Werke von Margaret Atwood, Jeffrey Eugenides und Robert M. Pirasig. Die Fragen nach den Grundlagen oder Begründungen von Ethik und nach der Funktionsweise ethischer Konzepte sind dabei zentral. Gleichzeitig sind damit die Funktionsweise des Verstandes und die menschliche Natur generell angesprochen. Beide werden als fundamental kommunikativ definiert, wobei die Kommunikation jede Handlung zur Verständigung, zum Verstehen, Fühlen und auch zur Wahrnehmung umfasst. Die damit heraufbeschworene kommunikative und soziale Natur des Menschen wird also in ihrer Konstitution und Funktionsweise untersucht. Dabei entwerfe ich das Konzept einer kommunikativ letztbegründeten Ethik, die sowohl die relativistischen als auch die realistischen Tendenzen der Postmoderne zu verbinden sucht und universalistische Elemente enthält. Dabei muss unterstrichen werden, dass es sich um eine Letztbegründung innerhalb eines relativistischen Rahmens handelt, die Struktur der Argumentation allerdings an traditionelle Varianten dieser Art erinnert. Zentrale Denker sind Judith Butler und Seyla Benhabib, auch Ernst Tugendhats Arbeiten zur Ethik spielen eine größere Rolle.

    One of the basic insights of the book is that there is a notion of non-relational linguistic representation which can fruitfully be employed in a systematic approach to literary fiction. This notion allows us to develop an improved understanding of the ontological nature of fictional entities. A related insight is that the customary distinction between extra-fictional and intra-fictional contexts has only a secondary theoretical importance. This distinction plays a central role in nearly all contemporary theories of literary fiction. There is a tendency among researchers to take it as obvious that the contrast between these two types of contexts is crucial for understanding the boundary that divides fiction from non-fiction. Seen from the perspective of non-relational representation, the key question is rather how representational networks come into being and how consumers of literary texts can, and do, engage with these networks. As a whole, the book provides, for the first time, a comprehensive artefactualist account of the nature of fictional entities

    During a tumultuous period when financial speculation began rapidly to outpace industrial production and consumption, Victorian financial journalists commonly explained the instability of finance by criticizing its inherent artifice—drawing persistent attention to what they called "fictitious capital." In a shift that naturalized this artifice, this critique of fictitious capital virtually disappeared by the 1860s, replaced by notions of fickle investor psychology and mental equilibrium encapsulated in the fascinating metaphor of "psychic economy."In close rhetorical readings of financial journalism, political economy, and the works of Dickens, Eliot, and Trollope, Kornbluh examines the psychological framing of economics, one of the nineteenth century’s most enduring legacies, reminding us that the current dominant paradigm for understanding financial crisis has a history of its own. She shows how novels illuminate this displacement and ironize ideological metaphors linking psychology and economics, thus demonstrating literature’s unique facility for evaluating ideas in process. Inheritors of this novelistic project, Marx and Freud each advance a critique of psychic economy that refuses to naturalize capitalism

    Die wissenschaftliche Untersuchung des Phänomens ästhetischer Selbstbezüglichkeit hat weiterhin Konjunktur. Einer Fülle von entwickelten Konzepten sowie simultan und teilweise synonym verwendeten Begriffen steht dabei das auffällige Desiderat einer diachronen und funktionalen Perspektive gegenüber. Vor diesem Hintergrund vereint der vorliegende Sammelband theoretische Grundlagenartikel und Einzelanalysen aus Literatur-, Film- und Musikwissenschaft, die den Blick für selbstreferentielle Strukturen und ihre potentiellen Funktionen im historischen und interdisziplinären Vergleich schärfen können. In dieser Ausrichtung eröffnen die versammelten Beiträge fruchtbare Perspektiven auf selbstreferentielle (Text )Strukturen von der Frühen Neuzeit bis heute, relativieren bisherige, meist deduktiv getroffene Forschungsannahmen und bieten mit der Frage nach den werkspezifischen Funktionen einen anschlussfähigen Ausgangspunkt für ein belastbares historisch kontextualisiertes Konzept ästhetischer Selbstreferenz, das zukünftig auch mit literatursoziologischen Fragestellungen verbunden werden kann.

    Abstract Scholarly discussion concerning rabbinic conceptions of the nature of halakhah—realist vs. nominalist—has for the most part focused on halakhic content and discourse. However, as Schremer has shown, non-halakhic passages may present conceptions that differ from those found in halakhic sources. Following Schremer’s suggested distinction, in this study I examine non-halakhic texts which use various metaphors or linguistic styles to characterize the miṣwot . In the cases I examine, I will demonstrate that the authors could have formulated their content in more than one way, and thus their choice of a particular linguistic style reflects their particular conception of the nature of the miṣwot . My suggestion is that non-halakhic sources that display both modes of thought, realist and nominalist views of Jewish law, offer more accurate reflections of the multifaceted conceptual world of the rabbis than do halakhic texts.

    Wie lässt sich der Kapitalismus erzählen? Eine Studie über Literatur, Wissen und Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert.Der literarische Realismus des 19. Jahrhunderts begreift die zeitgenössischeGesellschaft als grundsätzlich unkenntliche und intransparente Wirklichkeit. Waren und Geld, Kapital und Profit werden als Chiffren sozialer Verhältnisse konzipiert, deren Bedeutung nicht auf der Hand liegt, sondern entschlüsselt werden muss. Dabei stößt die Literatur auf die Probleme und Streitfragen der politischen Ökonomie, deren Wissensproduktion zum Material des Erzählens wird.Till Breyer rekonstruiert die wechselseitigen Bezüge von sozialen Verwerfungen, ökonomischem Wissen und realistischem Erzählen und stellt dabei die Begriffe der Produktion, des Verkehrs, des Kapitals und der Krise in den Mittelpunkt. Entlang eines literatur- und diskursgeschichtlichen Materials, das von Raabe und Dickens über Marx und Engels, Keller und Gaskell zu den Spätwerken Fontanes und Zolas führt, entfaltet die Studie den kulturellen Prozess, in dem das 19. Jahrhundert die Krisendynamik der Moderne zu deuten versucht.

    Eine soziale Wissenschaftstheorie schlägt einen Ausweg aus den aktuellen Kontroversen in der Wissenschaftsforschung vor, der erfordert: a) den nicht unabhängigen Charakter der Wissenschaftsphilosophie anzuerkennen; b) den erkenntnistheoretischen Status der Naturwissenschaften als einziges Erkenntnisideal zu überdenken; c) sich auf der Suche nach einer neuen methodischen Erfahrungauf die Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften zu konzentrieren; d) aufzuhören, Fallstudien als Version der ‚neutralen Sprache der Beobachtung‘ oder als ‚entscheidende Rechtfertigung‘ einer Theorie zu betrachten; und e) die Erklärungskraft der lokalen Kontextualisierung mit der Projektion und Konstruktion zukünftiger Wirkungskontexte wissenschaftlicher Ideen zu verbinden. Die Hinwendung zur Sozialität ordnet die Wissenschaftsforschung keiner Doktrin unter; sie ist vielmehr ein ökumenischer Appell zur Maximierung philosophischer Sensibilität und Offenheit. A social philosophy of science proposes a way out of current controversies in scientific research that requires: a) acknowledging the non-independent character of the philosophy of science; b) reconsidering the epistemological status of the natural sciences as the only ideal of knowledge; c) focusing on the social sciences and the humanities in search of a new methodological experience; d) ceasing to consider case studies as a version of the ‘neutral language of observation’ or as a ‘crucial justification’ of a theory; and e) combining the explanatory power of local contextualisation with the projection and construction of future contexts of the impact of scientific ideas. The shift towards sociality does not subordinate science studies to any doctrine; it is rather an ecumenical appeal to maximise philosophical sensitivity and openness.

    Die Studie beschäftigt sich erstmals dezidiert mit dem Thema Liebe bei Gottfried Keller und untersucht zu diesem Zweck kontrastierend zwei Novellensammlungen, die zusammen Früh- und Spätwerk des Autors umgreifen („Die Leute von Seldwyla“ und „Das Sinngedicht“). Damit soll nicht nur ein Beitrag zur Kellerforschung geleistet, sondern darüber hinaus auch der Versuch unternommen werden, den theoretischen Rahmen von literaturwissenschaftlichen Liebesstudien mit Hilfe der Psychoanalyse zu erweitern. Mit Freud und Lacan wird deutlich, was für ein großer Sprung es von den Verliebtheitsgeschichten der am Imaginären haftenden Seldwyler zur Liebe als symbolischer Sinnverdichtung ist. Wenn es stimmt, dass Kellers „Sinngedicht“ ein Buch über Übertragung ist, dann kann diese Studie zuletzt auch ein Licht auf die literarische Vorgeschichte der Psychoanalyse werfen, die sich für Liebesgeschichten fortan nicht nur zuständig erklärt, sondern die daraus sogar ihre Behandlungstechnik ableitet.

    Wie kommt es zur Herausbildung literarhistorischer Epochenkonstruktionen und welche Funktion haben sie? Warum setzen sich einige Epochenbegriffe dauerhaft durch, während andere frühzeitig wieder aus dem Diskurs verschwinden? Das vorliegende Werk nimmt sich dieser von der Forschung in letzter Zeit nur noch peripher behandelten Fragen nach dem Prozesscharakter literaturgeschichtlicher Epochenbildung an. Mithilfe von performativitäts- und feldtheoretischen Annahmen sowie Theorien der unsichtbaren Hand untersucht es die komplexen Mechanismen, die bei der Entstehung und Konsolidierung zeitgenössischer, das heißt aus der Interpretation und Bewertung gegenwärtiger Kulturphänomene hervorgegangener Zäsursetzungen wirksam werden. How do constructions of literary periods develop and what is their function? Why do some terms (as romanticism) prevail over the long term, while others disappear from the discourse at an early stage? The present work addresses these questions regarding the procedural character of ‘epochalization’, which tend to be neglected during the last decades. With the help of Bourdieu’s field theory, concepts of performativity and the ‘invisible hand’, it explores the complex mechanisms that are effective in the genesis and consolidation of contemporary claims of cultural shift. These claims result from the interpretation and evaluation of current cultural phenomena.

    Wie steht es um den Materialismus in den Literaturwissenschaften? Gibt es ‚den‘ Materialismus oder eine Pluralität von Materialismen? Wie bringen wir das Verhältnis der Dinge und Texte zu den Bedingungen ihres Erscheinens auf den Begriff? Und wie gestaltet sich dabei das Verhältnis der neuen zu den alten Materialismen? Man müsse, heißt es bei Marx, die Hegelsche Dialektik „umstülpen, um den rationellen Kern in der mystischen Hülle zu entdecken“. Im Anschluss an die vielschichtige Metapher des Umstülpens unternimmt das Buch eine Neuvermessung der Landkarte materialistischer Analyseformate in den Literaturwissenschaften. Auf der Grundlage einer kritischen Rekonstruktion marxistischer Traditionslinien werden gegenwärtige Einsätze vorgestellt und mittels theoretischer Situierung und exemplarischer Analysen auf ihre Potentiale hin befragt: Dabei erweisen sich der Realismus- und der Ideologiebegriff mit materialistischen Theorien der Form oder der Produktion von Literatur eng verwoben. Ansätze einer materialistischen Weltliteraturforschung werden mit postkolonialen und intersektionalen Perspektiven ins Gespräch gebracht. Zum Horizont aktueller Debatten gehören schließlich Fragen der Sorgearbeit oder ‚platform work‘ in der Gegenwartsliteratur. Der Band widmet sich u.a. theoretischen Positionen von Pierre Macherey, Roberto Schwarz, Karen Barad und des Warwick Research Collective sowie literarischen Texten von Wilhelm Raabe, Anna Seghers, Kōbō Abe und Gertraud Klemm. Das Resultat ist keine vollständige Darstellung des Diskursfeldes, sondern eine Orientierungshilfe, die es trotz der Unabgeschlossenheit der Begriffsbildung erlaubt, materialistische Theorie literaturwissenschaftlich fruchtbar zu machen.

Inspired by contemporary critical discourse (especially the works by such thinkers as Theodor Adorno, Fredric Jameson and Raymond Williams), the author challenges both exotic and postmodern representation of Japanese culture as "the other" of the West. By examining the social backgrounds of artists’ endeavors to create new literary forms, the author unveils a rich tradition of tragic literature that, unlike the dominant local tradition of naturalism, has registered the unbridgeable gap between universal ideals and social values at a particular historical moment

    In archaic and classical Greece, statues played a constant role in people's religious, political, economic, aesthetic, and mental lives. Evidence of many kinds demonstrates that ancient Greeks thought about--and interacted with--statues in ways very different from our own. This book recovers ancient thinking about statues by approaching them through contemporary literary sources. It not only shows that ancient viewers conceived of images as more operative than aesthetic, but additionally reveals how poets and philosophers found in sculpture a practice ''good to think with.'' Deborah Tarn Steiner considers how Greek authors used images to ponder the relation of a copy to an original and of external appearance to inner reality. For these writers, a sculpture could straddle life and death, encode desire, or occasion reflection on their own act of producing a text. Many of the same sources also reveal how thinking about statues was reflected in the objects' everyday treatment. Viewing representations of gods and heroes as vessels hosting a living force, worshippers ritually washed, clothed, and fed them in order to elicit the numinous presence within. By reading the plastic and verbal sources together, this book offers new insights into classical texts while illuminating the practices surrounding the design, manufacture, and deployment of ancient images. Its argument that images are properly objects of cultural and social--rather than purely aesthetic--study will attract art historians, cultural historians, and anthropologists, as well as classicists

Er dokumentiert – quasi in Echtzeit – den Ablauf des Symposiums, das durch einen ungewöhnlich barrierefreien Zugang des Publikums zum Tagungsgeschehen gekennzeichnet war. Das Netzwerk »Richtige Literatur im Falschen«, das diese Veranstaltung zum vierten Mal in dieser Form realisierte, versteht sich als offenes Diskussionsforum. Diskutiert wird in diesem Band die Frage, ob Deutschland heute wieder eine Klassengesellschaft ist, was die meisten der Autorinnen und Autoren bejahen. Die Auswirkungen dieser sozialen Spaltung werden aus verschiedenen Perspektiven betrachtet: der Pauperisierung, der Geschlechterproblematik und der Migration. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden sodann Überlegungen angestellt, ob Literatur auf die gesellschaftlichen Verwerfungen reagieren sollte oder gar muss – und wenn ja, in welcher Form.

    Eine soziale Wissenschaftstheorie schlägt einen Ausweg aus den aktuellen Kontroversen in der Wissenschaftsforschung vor, der erfordert: a) den nicht unabhängigen Charakter der Wissenschaftsphilosophie anzuerkennen; b) den erkenntnistheoretischen Status der Naturwissenschaften als einziges Erkenntnisideal zu überdenken; c) sich auf der Suche nach einer neuen methodischen Erfahrungauf die Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften zu konzentrieren; d) aufzuhören, Fallstudien als Version der ‚neutralen Sprache der Beobachtung‘ oder als ‚entscheidende Rechtfertigung‘ einer Theorie zu betrachten; und e) die Erklärungskraft der lokalen Kontextualisierung mit der Projektion und Konstruktion zukünftiger Wirkungskontexte wissenschaftlicher Ideen zu verbinden. Die Hinwendung zur Sozialität ordnet die Wissenschaftsforschung keiner Doktrin unter; sie ist vielmehr ein ökumenischer Appell zur Maximierung philosophischer Sensibilität und Offenheit. A social philosophy of science proposes a way out of current controversies in scientific research that requires: a) acknowledging the non-independent character of the philosophy of science; b) reconsidering the epistemological status of the natural sciences as the only ideal of knowledge; c) focusing on the social sciences and the humanities in search of a new methodological experience; d) ceasing to consider case studies as a version of the ‘neutral language of observation’ or as a ‘crucial justification’ of a theory; and e) combining the explanatory power of local contextualisation with the projection and construction of future contexts of the impact of scientific ideas. The shift towards sociality does not subordinate science studies to any doctrine; it is rather an ecumenical appeal to maximise philosophical sensitivity and openness.

In Gamer Trouble, Amanda Phillips excavates the turbulent relationships between surface and depth in contemporary gaming culture, taking readers under the hood of the mechanisms of video games in order to understand the ways that difference gets baked into its technological, ludic, ideological, and social systems.By centering the insights of queer and women of color feminisms in readings of online harassment campaigns, industry animation practices, and popular video games like Portal and Mass Effect, Phillips adds essential analytical tools to our conversations about video games.     Wie steht es um den Materialismus in den Literaturwissenschaften? Gibt es ‚den‘ Materialismus oder eine Pluralität von Materialismen? Wie bringen wir das Verhältnis der Dinge und Texte zu den Bedingungen ihres Erscheinens auf den Begriff? Und wie gestaltet sich dabei das Verhältnis der neuen zu den alten Materialismen? Man müsse, heißt es bei Marx, die Hegelsche Dialektik „umstülpen, um den rationellen Kern in der mystischen Hülle zu entdecken“. Im Anschluss an die vielschichtige Metapher des Umstülpens unternimmt das Buch eine Neuvermessung der Landkarte materialistischer Analyseformate in den Literaturwissenschaften. Auf der Grundlage einer kritischen Rekonstruktion marxistischer Traditionslinien werden gegenwärtige Einsätze vorgestellt und mittels theoretischer Situierung und exemplarischer Analysen auf ihre Potentiale hin befragt: Dabei erweisen sich der Realismus- und der Ideologiebegriff mit materialistischen Theorien der Form oder der Produktion von Literatur eng verwoben. Ansätze einer materialistischen Weltliteraturforschung werden mit postkolonialen und intersektionalen Perspektiven ins Gespräch gebracht. Zum Horizont aktueller Debatten gehören schließlich Fragen der Sorgearbeit oder ‚platform work‘ in der Gegenwartsliteratur. Der Band widmet sich u.a. theoretischen Positionen von Pierre Macherey, Roberto Schwarz, Karen Barad und des Warwick Research Collective sowie literarischen Texten von Wilhelm Raabe, Anna Seghers, Kōbō Abe und Gertraud Klemm. Das Resultat ist keine vollständige Darstellung des Diskursfeldes, sondern eine Orientierungshilfe, die es trotz der Unabgeschlossenheit der Begriffsbildung erlaubt, materialistische Theorie literaturwissenschaftlich fruchtbar zu machen.

    One of the basic insights of the book is that there is a notion of non-relational linguistic representation which can fruitfully be employed in a systematic approach to literary fiction. This notion allows us to develop an improved understanding of the ontological nature of fictional entities. A related insight is that the customary distinction between extra-fictional and intra-fictional contexts has only a secondary theoretical importance. This distinction plays a central role in nearly all contemporary theories of literary fiction. There is a tendency among researchers to take it as obvious that the contrast between these two types of contexts is crucial for understanding the boundary that divides fiction from non-fiction. Seen from the perspective of non-relational representation, the key question is rather how representational networks come into being and how consumers of literary texts can, and do, engage with these networks. As a whole, the book provides, for the first time, a comprehensive artefactualist account of the nature of fictional entities

    Imagined Truths provides a twenty-first-century analysis of stylistic and philosophical manifestations of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spanish literary realism. Bringing together the work of the foremost specialists in the field of contemporary Spanish letters, this collection offers new approaches to literary and cultural criticism and reveals how Spanish realism, far from being imitative of other European movements, engaged in complex and modern concepts of representation and mimesis. Imagined Truths acknowledges the critical importance of women writers and contemporary approaches to questions of gender. The essays address the impact of economics on our perceptions of reality and our constructions of everyday life, and they argue for the importance of emotions in the social construction of individual identity. Most importantly, they also acknowledge the post-imperial turn in literary studies.     This study is a theoretical reconsideration of the concept of the "tragic" combined with detailed analyses of Japanese literary texts. Inspired by contemporary critical discourse (especially the works by such thinkers as Theodor Adorno, Fredric Jameson and Raymond Williams), the author challenges both exotic and postmodern representation of Japanese culture as "the other" of the West. By examining the social backgrounds of artists’ endeavors to create new literary forms, the author unveils a rich tradition of tragic literature that, unlike the dominant local tradition of naturalism, has registered the unbridgeable gap between universal ideals and social values at a particular historical moment

    During a tumultuous period when financial speculation began rapidly to outpace industrial production and consumption, Victorian financial journalists commonly explained the instability of finance by criticizing its inherent artifice—drawing persistent attention to what they called "fictitious capital." In a shift that naturalized this artifice, this critique of fictitious capital virtually disappeared by the 1860s, replaced by notions of fickle investor psychology and mental equilibrium encapsulated in the fascinating metaphor of "psychic economy."In close rhetorical readings of financial journalism, political economy, and the works of Dickens, Eliot, and Trollope, Kornbluh examines the psychological framing of economics, one of the nineteenth century’s most enduring legacies, reminding us that the current dominant paradigm for understanding financial crisis has a history of its own. She shows how novels illuminate this displacement and ironize ideological metaphors linking psychology and economics, thus demonstrating literature’s unique facility for evaluating ideas in process. Inheritors of this novelistic project, Marx and Freud each advance a critique of psychic economy that refuses to naturalize capitalism

As our popular understanding of "gamer" shifts beyond its historical construction as a white, straight, adolescent, cisgender male, the troubles that emerge both confirm and challenge our understanding of identity politics. In Gamer Trouble, Amanda Phillips excavates the turbulent relationships between surface and depth in contemporary gaming culture, taking readers under the hood of the mechanisms of video games in order to understand the ways that difference gets baked into its technological, ludic, ideological, and social systems.By centering the insights of queer and women of color feminisms in readings of online harassment campaigns, industry animation practices, and popular video games like Portal and Mass Effect, Phillips adds essential analytical tools to our conversations about video games. She embraces the trouble that attends disciplinary crossroads, linking the violent hate speech of trolls and the representational practices marginalizing people of color, women, and queers in entertainment media to the dehumanizing logic undergirding computation and the optimization strategies of gameplay. From the microcosmic level of electricity and flicks of a thumb to the grand stages of identity politics and global capitalism, wherever gamers find themselves, gamer trouble follows.
