    Peace dealings in Early Modern times resembled more business transactions than anything else, peopled by actors being influenced by their country's specific circumstances or sometimes by chance alone. The danger of misunderstandings, whether precipitated through false translations or false interpretations, was imminent in all such proccedings. But ignorance too played an active role in both the political and legal background of Early Modern times. This collection of articles is concerned with both the temporal and the thematic contexts of the phenomena of "misunderstanding" and "ignorance." It provides many insights into the architecture of premodern communication. ; Die Verhandlungen um Frieden glichen im Europa der Frühen Neuzeit dem Aushandeln eines Geschäfts, das von Akteuren, spezifischen Umständen aber auch Zufällen beeinflusst wurde. Daher war die Gefahr missverständlicher Übersetzungs- und Deutungsoptionen fester Bestandteil von Friedensverhandlungen. Auch die "Ignoranz" spielte in der Politik und Jurisprudenz der Frühen Neuzeit eine wichtige Rolle. Häufig wurde Unwissen vorgetäuscht, um argumentative, politische und juristische Vorteile zu erlangen. In diesem Band versammeln sich Frühneuzeit-, Ideen-, Friedens-, Rechts- und Kunsthistoriker, um zentrale Fragen nach dem Einfluss von Unwissen und sprachlichen oder kulturellen Missverständnissen im vormodernen Friedensprozess zu beantworten. Kann das Nicht-Wissen sogar zu den friedensstiftenden Instrumenten gerechnet werden? Die Antworten geben einen neuen Einblick in die Architektur vormoderner Kommunikation.

    We know that history can be affected - and effected - by language and translations, a primary example being Luther´s translation of the Bible into German. Even the political processes of very complex modern societies are controlled by language processes, including deficiencies and communication misunderstandings. But how was the striving for peace transmitted between the various dynasties and societies in Europe? What was the political and cultural role of language in making and preserving peace? A number of individual studies have addressed the diplomatic methods and strategies of the premodern era, but they did not systematically treat the communicative dimension of peace negotiations of early modern times. The contributions in this edited volume are concerned with this complex question and touch on many individual aspects as well.

    Die vorliegende Studie ergänzt den Forschungsstand zur Wirkung visueller Kommunikation politischer Akteure durch eine innovative Methodenkombination aus Eye-Tracking und Real-Time-Response-Messung. Die Studie untersucht, inwiefern nonverbales Verhalten sowohl die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit als auch die (spontanen) Urteile von RezipientInnen beeinflusst. Außerdem wird der Zusammenhang aus Blickverhalten und Urteilsbildung analysiert. Dazu sahen TeilnehmerInnen der Studie Videos von Politikerreden entweder mit oder ohne Ton. Befunde zeigen, dass spezifisches körpersprachliches Verhalten (z.B. emotionale Gesichtsausdrücke oder Handgesten) zum einen die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit lenkt. Zum anderen haben sowohl verbale Äußerungen als auch nonverbales Verhalten Auswirkungen auf die spontane Urteilsbildung über Politiker. Effekte nonverbaler Kommunikation treten insbesondere dann auf, wenn kein Ton verfügbar ist. Die Ergebnisse deuten zudem auf einzelne Zusammenhänge zwischen Blickverhalten und Urteilsbildung hin. This study complements research on the effects of visual communication by politicians by combining eye tracking and real-time response measurement. It investigates the extent to which non-verbal behaviour affects the visual attention of and (spontaneous) impression formation among viewers, while also analysing the relationship between gaze behaviour and impression formation. Participants watched videos of political speeches either with or without sound. The results show that specific non-verbal behaviour (e.g. emotional facial expressions or hand gestures) direct visual attention. Furthermore, both verbal statements and non-verbal communication affect spontaneous opinion formation about politicians. The effects of non-verbal communication occur especially if no verbal information is available. Moreover, the results indicate some relation between attention distribution and impression formation.

    Die vorliegende Studie ergänzt den Forschungsstand zur Wirkung visueller Kommunikation politischer Akteure durch eine innovative Methodenkombination aus Eye-Tracking und Real-Time-Response-Messung. Die Studie untersucht, inwiefern nonverbales Verhalten sowohl die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit als auch die (spontanen) Urteile von RezipientInnen beeinflusst. Außerdem wird der Zusammenhang aus Blickverhalten und Urteilsbildung analysiert. Dazu sahen TeilnehmerInnen der Studie Videos von Politikerreden entweder mit oder ohne Ton. Befunde zeigen, dass spezifisches körpersprachliches Verhalten (z.B. emotionale Gesichtsausdrücke oder Handgesten) zum einen die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit lenkt. Zum anderen haben sowohl verbale Äußerungen als auch nonverbales Verhalten Auswirkungen auf die spontane Urteilsbildung über Politiker. Effekte nonverbaler Kommunikation treten insbesondere dann auf, wenn kein Ton verfügbar ist. Die Ergebnisse deuten zudem auf einzelne Zusammenhänge zwischen Blickverhalten und Urteilsbildung hin. This study complements research on the effects of visual communication by politicians by combining eye tracking and real-time response measurement. It investigates the extent to which non-verbal behaviour affects the visual attention of and (spontaneous) impression formation among viewers, while also analysing the relationship between gaze behaviour and impression formation. Participants watched videos of political speeches either with or without sound. The results show that specific non-verbal behaviour (e.g. emotional facial expressions or hand gestures) direct visual attention. Furthermore, both verbal statements and non-verbal communication affect spontaneous opinion formation about politicians. The effects of non-verbal communication occur especially if no verbal information is available. Moreover, the results indicate some relation between attention distribution and impression formation.

    Auf die sich multipolar entwickelnde Machtverteilung reagieren die Theorieschulen der Internationalen Beziehungen (IB) in den letzten Jahrzehnten mit einer immer stärkeren Ausdifferenzierung. Über diesem Prozess schwebt stets die Kritik am Fehlen einer gemeinhin akzeptierten Systematik. Ferner bestehen Unklarheiten hinsichtlich der Anwendungsmöglichkeiten und Erklärungsleistungen der theoretischen Denkansätze. Vor diesem Hintergrund diskutiert die KFIBS-Forschungsgruppe „IB-Theorien und Außenpolitikforschung“ aktuelle Trends und Debatten in den IB, bedient sich dabei ausgewählter Theorieansätze und wendet diese auf empirische Fallstudien an, um deren Leistungsfähigkeit zu testen. Mit Beiträgen von Sebastian M. Niemetz, Jann Preisendörfer, Ludwig Schulze, Paul Emtsev, Pauline Mathieu, Nicolas Verbeek, Eliza Friederichs und Sascha Arnautović. Schools of thought in International Relations (IR) are increasingly differentiating to match with the multipolar power distribution. Yet, the newly implemented strands are facing criticism for the lack of a generally accepted systematic framework. Furthermore, there are ambiguities with regard to the possible applications and explanations for the theoretical approaches. Against this background, the KFIBS research group “International Relations Theories and Foreign Policy Research” discusses current trends and debates in IR, using selected theoretical approaches and applying them to empirical case studies to evaluate their performance. With contributions by Sebastian M. Niemetz, Jann Preisendörfer, Ludwig Schulze, Paul Emtsev, Pauline Mathieu, Nicolas Verbeek, Eliza Friederichs and Sascha Arnautović.

    Studies point out that populism, a concept still in dire need of clarifications, resembles more of a rhetorical strategy than a fully-fledged ideology. Actually, populism has become a concept so frequently used that its orginial meaning seems to have been lost, leaving it as an empty shell, at least from an ideological point of view. I argue that in spite of this - or rather as a means of compensation - populism uses a very robust mythological apparatus, creating narratives that allow voters to easily understand its messages. The current article underlines that in an attempt to over-simplify its discourse, populism makes use of all four political myths identified by Raoul Girardet. The conspiracy myth represents the main element revolving around the populist discourse. Politicians who embrace this rhetoric denounce a secret society that is rigorously organized, the actions of which defy morality, using all means to attain political power. The other three political myths, i.e. the myth of unity, the myth of the savior and the myth of the golden age, act together only as a counterweight for the first. The paper also points out that the success of Euroscepticism lies in the fact that it represents the perfect embedding for such myths, and that the EU needs to generate its own narratives if it hopes to confront the so-called “populist temptation”.

    This paper aims at showing how quantitative corpus linguistic analysis can inform qualitative analysis of digital media discourse with respect to the mediality of language in use. Using the example of protest discourse in Twitter, in the field of anti-Islamic ‘Pegida’ demonstrations, a three-step method of collecting, reducing and interpreting salient data is proposed. Each step is aligned with opera-tive medial features of the microblog: hashtags, retweets and @-interactions. The exemplary analysis reveals the importance of discussions of attendance numbers in protest discourse and the asymmetry between administrative (i.e. the police) and non-administrative discourse agents. Furthermore, it exemplifies how frequency analysis and sequence analysis can be combined for research in media linguistics.

    During the first decade of this century, Germany saw a radical transformation of its old age security system. The coalition of social democrats and the green party transformed the traditional German pension system into a three-pillar-system and reduced the generosity of the pay-as-you-go-pillar. Subsequently, a Grand Coalition of social democrats and Christian democrats raised the retirement age to 67. This study examines the debates of this decade by using a discourse analytical approach in combination with the veto-term-approach. It reconstructs the public and political discourses of the reform laws of 2001, 2004, and 2007. Research interest of this study is if the normative concepts of the German old age security system have transformed in accordance with the institutional transformations. Did the popular terms of that time individual responsibility, sustainability and flexibility become part of the normative basic vocabulary or did the traditional value terms remain dominant? Outcome of the study is a reconstruction of the main political arguments of the transformation era and a dictionary of the main normative concepts of German old age security.
