    Thresholds of Illiteracy reevaluates Latin American theories and narratives of cultural resistance by advancing the concept of "illiteracy" as a new critical approach to understanding scenes or moments of social antagonism. "Illiteracy," Acosta claims, can offer us a way of talking about what cannot be subsumed within prevailing modes of reading, such as the opposition between writing and orality, that have frequently been deployed to distinguish between modern and archaic peoples and societies.This book is organized as a series of literary and cultural analyses of internationally recognized postcolonial narratives. It tackles a series of the most important political/aesthetic issues in Latin America that have arisen over the past thirty years or so, including indigenism, testimonio, the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, and migration to the United States via the U.S.–Mexican border.Through a critical examination of the "illiterate" effects and contradictions at work in these resistant narratives, the book goes beyond current theories of culture and politics to reveal radically unpredictable forms of antagonism that advance the possibility for an ever more democratic model of cultural analysis

    The prominent role books and the act of writing played in the life of the Manichaean Church distinguishes Manichaeism even among other “religions of the book.” This article tackles the question whether the primacy of writing was established by Mani himself or resulted from a development that occurred within the first generations of Mani’s followers. The analysis of the extant fragments of Mani’s own works and early Manichaean texts such as the work of Baraies preserved in the Cologne Mani Codex and the Kephalaia indicate that Mani’s superiority as a writing prophet and the ritual meaning of writing most likely were not part of Mani’s original teaching. Rather, they resulted from the efforts of Manichaean theologians who sought to demonstrate the exceptional status of Mani’s revelation and prophetic mission based on his writings. The Prologue to the Kephalaia of the Teacher played a significant role in this development and contributed extensively to the ritualization of writing in Manichaeism.

    Der Beitrag thematisiert die Genese der Sakralisierung der arabischen Schrift, die im vorislamischen Arabien eine untergeordnete Rolle spielt und mit der Verschriftlichung des Korans den Status eines sakralen Symbolsystems erreicht. Hier wird die These vertreten, dass die Sakralisierung der arabischen Schrift in Zusammenhang mit der Textgeschichte des Korans zu denken ist. Er ist Gefäß der göttlichen Offenbarung, deren Unverrückbarkeit auf das Speicherungsmedium der Schrift zurückprojiziert wird. Mit der Verschriftlichung des Korans wird nicht nur seine Kodifizierung und damit die Propositionalisierung des Islams beabsichtigt, sondern auch die Einreihung des Islams in die schriftlich-monotheistische Tradition. Muslime sind fortan wie Juden und Christen auch Schriftbesitzer, wie der Koran sie charakterisiert. Ursprünglich ist der Koran eine virtuelle heilige Schrift. Koran, AT und NT unterscheiden sich in erster Linie im Medium: Der Schriftlichkeit der hebräischen Bibel und der christlichen Bibel steht die Mündlichkeit des Korans gegenüber. Der Umschlag zu einer schriftlichen Form wird mit der arabischen Schrift vollzogen, die die frühen Muslime modifizieren, kodifizieren und einfrieren. Die Sakralisierung der arabischen Schrift hat bis in die Gegenwart hineinreichende Konsequenzen und trägt wesentlich zur Diglossie in der arabischen Welt bei. Religionswissenschaftlich interessant ist, dass im Fall der arabischen Muslime religiöse mit kultureller und auch nationaler Identität verschmelzen: Arabische Sprache und Schrift halten diese Symbiose zusammen.

    As the product of a textual community imbedded in an oral culture, the War Scroll can be rewardingly approached as a composition intended for a community of hearers. Indeed, this article demonstrates that 1QM retained an orally fluid textuality and preserves a variety of textual indicators of performativity: hints of oral engagement, accumulation of imitable practices, and reliance on rhetorical techniques suited to the ear. In examining the performative potentials in the War Scroll's prescriptive (cols. 1-9), prayer (cols. 10-14), and dramatic (cols. 15-19) material, I argue that 1QM can be understood as a spoken text, one which lends itself to performance and embodiment.

    This article explores the type and function of historiography in the pesharim, a group of biblical commentaries in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Although the unabashedly subjective viewpoint of history in the pesharim strongly contrasts modern notions of historiography, they nevertheless present a kind of history writing. In particular, historiography in the pesharim is analogous to traditional history, a type of history writing found in oral epics from around the world. Like traditional history, the pesharim owe their primary allegiance to a special register of language that is both traditional and adaptable. Rather than a factual record, the pesharim are formative cultural texts that use history to create and transmit cultural memory. More specifically, traditional history in the pesharim constructs a common descent of membership and "instrumentalizes" the past for identity formation in the present.

    In the wake of Milman Parry's and Alfred Lord's groundbreaking discovery of oral composition in Homeric epics, biblical scholars analyzed the formulaic language of the biblical Psalms with a view toward establishing a similar compositional function. This approach met with little success. Among the many recent refinements to the Oral-Formulaic theory is the distinction between oral composition and oral conception, a distinction which allows for identifying oral features of a "text" which do not necessarily reflect composition in performance. The goal of this article is two-fold. First this article proposes a new model for identifying oral formulas based on the theory of prototypical categorization developed within the field of cognitive sciences, particularly cognitive linguistics. Second, this article argues that the psalmic oral formulas are best understood as linguistic registers which evoke a performance arena, a feature of orally derived literature described most extensively by John Miles Foley.

    The Psalms were composed for oral performance, and many today believe they should be restored to their performance vitality. “Translation for performance” requires many concepts to be considered, one of which is how the audience (or receptor community) will use the translated text. In the case of translating poetry, these considerations often point to the value of literary-rhetorical translation, which captures the poetical beauty and persuasive power of the original. Also, translating from an oral text and following the form of local poetic genres facilitates ready application of psalms. In this paper, empirical studies illustrate some ways in which psalms have been used recently with communities in South Africa: in corporate worship, in personal prayer, and with sectoral groups. Translators need constantly to keep their eye on the end game, to ensure the translated psalms facilitate a living conversation between people and God, as the ancient poems did.

    This article argues that the micro-structure of Paul's letters is intrinsically linked to an aural logic. Taking 2 Corinthians 10:8-11 as an example and using the notions of côlon and period as described in the rhetoric and stylistic treatises of the Graeco-Roman world, I will show both the methods and the extent to which it is possible to reconstitute its original "punctuation" - i.e., the different breaks that punctuated this passage when it was read aloud. This will allow me to shed new light on the structure of the passage and, especially, on the debated question of the place of verse 9, namely the extent to which it is linked with either verse 8 or verses 10-11, or is rather independent. More generally, this article is an invitation to develop colometric analysis as an additional tool in debates concerning micro-structure and punctuation of NT texts.

    This article addresses the intersection of the oral tradition with textual contents in Pāli Buddhist literature, by focusing mostly on the Suttapiṭaka. Lexicon and stylistic features can be seen as intentional strategies to enhance specific mnemonic and meditative qualities in the disciples, thus working symbiotically with the instructions they convey. By examining selected passages, I will demonstrate a functional interrelationship of three main factors: the lexicon of listening, the emphasis on attention, and meditative instructions. These three factors, in turn, rely upon the authoritative power of the scriptures, which is constructed and reinforced with specific rhetorical stratagems to raise and enhance meditative qualities in the disciples.

    Die Arbeit analysiert die vielfältige Darstellung medialer Prozesse in zwei spätmittelalterlichen ,Liebes- und Abenteuerromanen': Reinfried von Braunschweig und Apollonius von Tyrland. Mit dem Interesse an Medialität schließt sie an einen aktuellen Forschungsschwerpunkt der germanistischen Mediävistik an, durch die Auseinandersetzung mit erzählten medialen Vorgängen setzt sie einen originellen Fokus im Forschungsfeld. Medientheoretisch fundiert und historisch sensibel widmet die Untersuchung sich in close-readings den medialen Formen, die auf der Textebene in Erscheinung treten und mithilfe derer die Figuren Raum-, Zeit-, und Sphärengrenzen kommunikativ überwinden. Beide Texte heben die durch mediale Vorgänge eröffneten Handlungsmöglichkeiten sowie die Relevanz von Medienkompetenz hervor und profilieren literarische Texte selbst als mediale Formen mit besonderen Vermittlungspotentialen. Indem erzählte Mediation jeweils zur Entfaltung narrativer Komplexität und Tiefe genutzt wird, erweist sich in der vergleichenden Betrachtung der Blick auf mediale Phänomene auch als Schlüssel zu der inhaltlichen Schwerpunktsetzung und dem erzählerischen Profil der Einzeltexte This study examines the intense preoccupation with presenting medial processes evidenced in the love-and-adventure romances Reinfried von Braunschweig and Appolonius von Tyrland.     Wie können Gedichte das Flüchtige – l'éphémère, le fugitif – nicht nur zum Thema und Motiv machen, sondern selbst erzeugen? In Gedichtbänden von Rosalie Lessard, François Rioux und Maggie Roussel charakterisiert Flüchtigkeit das Lebensgefühl in einer schnelllebigen, globalisierten und digitalisierten Welt. Sie geht dabei Hand in Hand mit dem Performativen. Doch Flüchtigkeit ist keine Erfindung der Gegenwartspoesie. Die Studie klassifiziert verschiedene, auch zeitspezifische Erscheinungsweisen des Ephemeren anhand eines neuen Merkmalkatalogs und präsentiert Kategorien performativer Verfahren der Nähe und Distanz. Bestimmte performative Strategien der Gedichte machen das Flüchtige im Akt der Lektüre spürbar. Gezeigt wird, dass es ein besonderer Bezug zum Performativen, zur Performance und zum Flüchtigen ist, der die aktuelle Poesie in Québec zu einem eigenen Phänomen macht.

    Thresholds of Illiteracy reevaluates Latin American theories and narratives of cultural resistance by advancing the concept of "illiteracy" as a new critical approach to understanding scenes or moments of social antagonism. "Illiteracy," Acosta claims, can offer us a way of talking about what cannot be subsumed within prevailing modes of reading, such as the opposition between writing and orality, that have frequently been deployed to distinguish between modern and archaic peoples and societies.This book is organized as a series of literary and cultural analyses of internationally recognized postcolonial narratives. It tackles a series of the most important political/aesthetic issues in Latin America that have arisen over the past thirty years or so, including indigenism, testimonio, the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, and migration to the United States via the U.S.–Mexican border.Through a critical examination of the "illiterate" effects and contradictions at work in these resistant narratives, the book goes beyond current theories of culture and politics to reveal radically unpredictable forms of antagonism that advance the possibility for an ever more democratic model of cultural analysis

    Die Arbeit analysiert die vielfältige Darstellung medialer Prozesse in zwei spätmittelalterlichen ,Liebes- und Abenteuerromanen': Reinfried von Braunschweig und Apollonius von Tyrland. Mit dem Interesse an Medialität schließt sie an einen aktuellen Forschungsschwerpunkt der germanistischen Mediävistik an, durch die Auseinandersetzung mit erzählten medialen Vorgängen setzt sie einen originellen Fokus im Forschungsfeld. Medientheoretisch fundiert und historisch sensibel widmet die Untersuchung sich in close-readings den medialen Formen, die auf der Textebene in Erscheinung treten und mithilfe derer die Figuren Raum-, Zeit-, und Sphärengrenzen kommunikativ überwinden. Beide Texte heben die durch mediale Vorgänge eröffneten Handlungsmöglichkeiten sowie die Relevanz von Medienkompetenz hervor und profilieren literarische Texte selbst als mediale Formen mit besonderen Vermittlungspotentialen. Indem erzählte Mediation jeweils zur Entfaltung narrativer Komplexität und Tiefe genutzt wird, erweist sich in der vergleichenden Betrachtung der Blick auf mediale Phänomene auch als Schlüssel zu der inhaltlichen Schwerpunktsetzung und dem erzählerischen Profil der Einzeltexte This study examines the intense preoccupation with presenting medial processes evidenced in the love-and-adventure romances Reinfried von Braunschweig and Appolonius von Tyrland.     Pauline studies have, not surprisingly, largely concentrated on Paul as letter writer and on the impact of his rhetoric on his communities. In this study, I direct attention to the significant role of Paul's letter carriers, who not only transported the papyrus copies of his letters to the churches but also were responsible for the presentation of Paul's message to the letter recipients. Employing performance criticism informed by ancient writings on rhetoric and persuasion, one discerns a portrait of Paul's couriers as individuals whose passionate and adaptable performances of Paul's messages to his churches were instrumental in Paul's success or failure as letter writer.

    Psalms are performance literature and were prepared for communities to engage with orally. The sound patterns, rhythm, and use of many performance features strengthen the communication of the meaning and facilitate the audience to participate in the worship within the psalms. This paper explores an approach to translating psalms in which community poets and musicians begin by focussing on listening to the text and exploring orally the big themes and poetic patterns. Next they engage in various creative activities relevant to the text and to their contexts. Then they analyse the text carefully, using the traditional exegetical approach. This helps firm up the oral text, bringing it closer to the Hebrew, but retains the initial creativity that emerged in the earlier exercises. Finally, the exegetically-accurate written text is adjusted, as needed, for community performance. The methodology has been used with several communities in Africa and initial results are encouraging.

    This article is about oral Bible translation (OBT), its key features, and how it differs from both written Bible translation and oral Bible storying. The author draws on her own experience as a Translation Advisor on an OBT team, and also from interaction with other OBT teams around the world. The article proposes that internalisation is the key component or “ingredient” in OBT, and also discusses emotional exegesis and voice prosody as essential features of the oral translation process. Ideas are offered on how consultant checking of OBT differs from that of written Bible translation. The article ends by recommending intensive training on internalisation for all Bible translation teams, the development of notes on emotional exegesis and performance, and increased training for translation consultants on orality.

    Ruth Finnegan's Oral Literature in Africa was first published in 1970, and since then has been widely praised as one of the most important books in its field. Based on years of fieldwork, the study traces the history of storytelling across the continent of Africa. This revised edition makes Finnegan's ground-breaking research available to the next generation of scholars. It includes a new introduction, additional images and an updated bibliography, as well as its original chapters on poetry, prose, "drum language" and drama, and an overview of the social, linguistic and historical background of oral literature in Africa. As with all Open Book publications, this entire book can be read for free online. It is also available as a free pdf and ebook download, thanks to generous donations from supporters using the crowd-funding website Unglue.it. In addition, there is a free online archive of recordings and photographs that Finnegan made during her fieldwork in the late 1960s.     Over the last several decades, performance criticism has made significant headway as an interpretive method. However, in a recent issue of this journal, Larry Hurtado argues that the key assumptions of the movement ignore various historical realities regarding the use of texts in the ancient world. The following discussion offers a brief response to what Hurtado suggests are several ‘oversimplifications'. The essay argues that rather than being a ‘fixation' as Hurtado maintains, the renewed focus on orality and performance is a corrective that helps to provide a broader understanding of how biblical texts were typically experienced in the ancient world.

    Until the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the dominant paradigm of the textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible was the quest for the original form of each of its books—the source texts (Urtext) from which all subsequent editions were copied. Since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, a number of scholars have proposed significant revisions to this paradigm. These proposals are presented by means of an analogy with David Living-stone's expeditions to find the source of the River Nile, and then evaluated by means of a comparison of the history of the text of the Hebrew Bible with the history of the text of the Qur'ān. According to Ibn Abī Dāwūd (d.928), the widespread oral memorization and recitation of the Qur'ān in the first Muslim generation led to the emergence of a multiplicity of textual and oral versions of its ‘original' suwar. This, in turn, led to a series of (ultimately successful) attempts to standardize the text of the Qur'ān through the repression of all readings that differed from the one ‘official' text. Applying a ‘Livingstonian' text-critical model to the Qur'ān suggests that ongoing research into the earliest forms of the Qur'ān could be revolutionized if it sought to recover the early plurality that was consequent from its popularity. Applying an Ibn Abī Dāwūd text-critical model to ongoing research into the Talmudic and Masoretic periods of the Hebrew Bible suggests that it could be revolutionized if it sought to recover the history of the standardization of the variant texts. Under these paradigms, the purpose of textual criticism must be transformed from the pursuit of an imagined ideal text to become an enquiry into the nature of the texts that have been declared canonical.

    Der von Peter Koch und Wulf Oesterreicher 1985 erstmals veröffentlichte Ansatz ‚Sprache der Nähe und Sprache der Distanz‘ kann als das erfolgreichste Modell zur Erfassung des Spannungsfelds von Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit betrachtet werden. Zum Erfolg gehört dabei einerseits die breite Anwendung insbesondere in der germanistischen Linguistik in verschiedenen Bereichen wie Variationslinguistik, Spracherwerb und Medienlinguistik. Andererseits zählt zum Erfolg des Modells – wie bei allen Klassikern – gerade auch seine anhaltende kritische Diskussion. Der Band reflektiert mit den wissenschaftstheoretischen und -historischen Beiträgen von Wulf Oesterreicher/Peter Koch, Clemens Knobloch, Utz Maas, Helmuth Feilke und Wolfgang Imo die Hintergründe für die Karriere des Nähe-Distanz-Modells und dokumentiert darüber hinaus durch Beiträge von Mathilde Hennig/Joachim Jacob, Roland Kehrein/Hanna Fischer, Sonja Zeman, Doris Tophinke, Christa Dürscheid, Jan Georg Schneider und Matthias Knopp die Anwendung und kritische Diskussion in den Bereichen Variationslinguistik, Sprachgeschichte und Medientheorie The notion of a 'language of immediacy and language of distance' by Peter Koch and Wulf Oesterreicher has been widely applied since its initial publication in 1985, especially in the field of German Linguistics. This edited volume documents the approach's discussion in the areas of Variational Linguistics, Language History and Media Theory.
