    Erzählungen wie auch Dramen besitzen mehrheitlich einen strukturellen Unterbau, den man in einem weit gefassten Sinne als moralisch beschreiben kann - er vermittelt also Regeln und Sätze des „Sollens“. Dieser Unterbau wie auch die Beziehung zwischen Erzähler und Leser werden in der Metapher des „Moralischen Paktes“ abgebildet, eines Paktes mit drei Elementen: Konkurrenz, Austausch und Vertrag. In einem solchen Rahmen bewegt sich in der Regel das literarische Figurenpersonal. Der vorliegende Band befasst sich mit der moralischen Struktur literarischer Werke, ein weiterer Band, der dem Verhältnis zwischen Autor und Erzähler bzw. zwischen Erzähler und Leser gewidmet sein wird, ist in Vorbereitung. Narratives and dramatic plays are usually based on a non manifest structure that can be conceived as a moral one, where you can find rules and sentences of having-to-do. The Moral Contract as a metaphor describes this fundamental basis, composed of three components: competition, exchange and contract. In this framework the narrative figures are bound to their acting. This volume 1 deals with such a structure, volume 2 will focus on the relation of the writer and his narrator just as on the relation of the narrator and the reader.

    There are ghosts. At least, in "Hamlet" there are. This is an example of a fictional truth, of something true in a fiction. Or so it seems. For, once we broaden our view to all kinds and realms of fiction our ordinary notions are challenged, and intriguing philosophical questions arise. Are there really any fictional truths? How can they be determined? Is everything just interpretation? Can anything be fictional? Could you be part of a fiction? Et cetera. The philosophical literature on fiction typically focusses on the semantics of fictional discourse and the ontology of fictional objects. In contrast, this study explores the nature of fictional truth by analyzing its conceptual structure and by unfolding some of its most important conceptual connections. After reviewing the field and identifying core elements that any theory of fictional truth must accommodate Christian Folde investigates several interrelated issues central to the on-going debates. Building on a clear account of fictional content and a wealth of examples the author offers novel solutions to various problems at the intersection of fictional truth, interpretation, and narration. The book thereby makes contributions to aesthetics, metaphysics and literary theory, among other things, and is thus both of philosophical and interdisciplinary value.

    Um 1900 war das medizinische Phänomen der Neurasthenie zu einem allgemeinen Störungsbild angewachsen, an dem sich das Unbehagen an der Moderne manifestierte. Die Neurasthenie war immer mehr als das psychische Leiden einzelner – sie war auch der Preis, den Gesellschaft für den Fortschritt zu zahlen hatte. Auch Thomas Mann war vom Nervendiskurs seiner Zeit wie auch vom Wissen um die Neurasthenie beeinflusst. Vor allem im frühen Werk, so in Buddenbrooks und Tonio Kröger, versammeln sich diese Themen wie in einem Brennglas: Zwischen Degeneration und Psychologie des Selbst ist die Neurasthenie zum Symptom einer Krise des bürgerlichen Subjekts geworden; so kann z.B. aus heutiger Sicht die Symptomatik Thomas Buddenbrooks als erste Fallvignette in der Geschichte des Burnouts gelesen werden. In diesem Band geht es aber nicht darum, die zur Schablone gewordene Deutung der Neurasthenie als Zeitkrankheit um 1900 auf die Gegenwart zu legen. Vielmehr sollen die Diskurse um Nervenkrankheit und künstlerisches Potential als zeitgebundene Debatten befragt und nach den Bedingungen des Schreibens im Spiegel der Neurasthenie gefragt werden. Die Wiederbesichtigung eines berühmten Topos – Krankheit und Kunst bei Thomas Mann – will damit einen neuen Blick auf ein altes Thema werfen. By 1900, the medical phenomenon of neurasthenia had grown into an image of general disorder manifesting the malaise of modernity. Neurasthenia was always more than the psychological suffering of individuals – it was also the price society had to pay for progress. Thomas Mann, too, was influenced by his contemporaries‘ obsession with time. Especially in his early works, such as Buddenbrooks and Tonio Kröger, these subjects come together as if focussed in a burning glass: between degeneration and the psychology of the self, neurasthenia has become a symptom of a crisis of the bourgeois subject; from today's perspective, for example, the symptomatology of Thomas Buddenbrooks can be read as the first case vignette in the history of burnout. In this volume, however, the aim is not to apply the interpretation of neurasthenia as a contemporary illness around 1900 to the present, which application has by now turned into a simple template. Rather, it aims to interrogate the discourses surrounding neurasthenia and artistic potential as time-bound debates and to ask about the conditions of writing in the mirror of neurasthenia. This revisiting of a famous topos – illness and art in Thomas Mann – thus aims to take a new look at an old topic.

    Erzählungen wie auch Dramen besitzen mehrheitlich einen strukturellen Unterbau, den man in einem weit gefassten Sinne als moralisch beschreiben kann - er vermittelt also Regeln und Sätze des „Sollens“. Dieser Unterbau wie auch die Beziehung zwischen Erzähler und Leser werden in der Metapher des „Moralischen Paktes“ abgebildet, eines Paktes mit drei Elementen: Konkurrenz, Austausch und Vertrag. In einem solchen Rahmen bewegt sich in der Regel das literarische Figurenpersonal. Der vorliegende Band befasst sich mit der moralischen Struktur literarischer Werke, ein weiterer Band, der dem Verhältnis zwischen Autor und Erzähler bzw. zwischen Erzähler und Leser gewidmet sein wird, ist in Vorbereitung. Narratives and dramatic plays are usually based on a non manifest structure that can be conceived as a moral one, where you can find rules and sentences of having-to-do. The Moral Contract as a metaphor describes this fundamental basis, composed of three components: competition, exchange and contract. In this framework the narrative figures are bound to their acting. This volume 1 deals with such a structure, volume 2 will focus on the relation of the writer and his narrator just as on the relation of the narrator and the reader.

    Ein »artistisches Ganzes«? - Zum rhetorischen, stilistischen und poetologischen Charakter von Marx` Hauptwerk.Das »Kapital« gehört zu den bekanntesten und wirkmächtigsten Texten der politischen Ökonomie und modernen Philosophie. Über den zahllosen Kontroversen um Marx` Hauptwerk wurde bislang jedoch vernachlässigt, wie sorgfältig und durchdacht dieses gestaltet ist, wie intensiv es sich auf literarische Texte bezieht und selbst immer wieder mit poetischen und stilistischen Mitteln wie Metaphern oder narrativen Einschüben arbeitet und wie sehr der theoretische Ansatz des »Kapitals« von der Darstellungsweise dieses Textes abhängt.In 14 Beiträgen wird die Frage nach der Poetik und Ästhetik des »Kapitals« aus verschiedenen Perspektiven untersucht: vom Zusammenhang von Rhetorik, Polemik und Kritik über das Wechselspiel von Darstellung und Wissen, die Rolle von Erzählungen bis zum Verhältnis des »Kapitals« zur Erzählliteratur des 19. Jahrhunderts, bevor an den Beispielen von Sergej Eisenstein und Alexander Kluge abschließend zwei produktive Rezeptionen von Marx` Text im 20. In particular, it shows how specific ambiguous utterances (e.g. a clash of implicatures and presuppositions) are linked with each other and contribute to the global ambiguity of the text. In this way, not only the function of ambiguity for understanding Wuthering Heights is explored but also the function of Wuthering Heights for understanding ambiguity. The book should thus be of interest not only to Brontë scholars and Victorianists but also to literary scholars and linguists in general.

    In recent years, scholars of the Hebrew Bible have increasingly challenged entrenched dichotomies between historical criticism and literary theory. This integrative approach draws on contemporary literary studies to achieve a fuller understanding of biblical texts as fictive works in their ancient historical contexts. Theophany narratives invite especially fruitful application of this approach because they are both culturally specific and literarily complex. In this article, I contribute to this conversation by analyzing the fictive role of narrational voicing in Deut 4:1-40, the opening section of Moses's first-person account of the Horeb theophany in the pentateuchal Deuteronomic source. This passage famously underscores the auditory (as opposed to visual) character of the Horeb theophany in order to provide phenomenological ground for aniconism. While scholars usually treat this as a tenet of Deuteronomic theology, I argue that it is also part of the Deuteronomic poetics of first-person narration: Moses is framing the theophany in terms of his experience of the molten calf, which has already happened within the story world of D. This literary effect emerged both through Deuteronomic engagement with the earlier, Elohistic version of the story and through retrospective sapientialization of earlier material within D itself. Integrating historical-critical and literary-theoretical approaches shows how Deut 4:1-40 uses first-person narration to construct the theophany through the character development of the narrator.

    There are ghosts. At least, in "Hamlet" there are. This is an example of a fictional truth, of something true in a fiction. Or so it seems. For, once we broaden our view to all kinds and realms of fiction our ordinary notions are challenged, and intriguing philosophical questions arise. Are there really any fictional truths? How can they be determined? Is everything just interpretation? Can anything be fictional? Could you be part of a fiction? Et cetera. The philosophical literature on fiction typically focusses on the semantics of fictional discourse and the ontology of fictional objects. In contrast, this study explores the nature of fictional truth by analyzing its conceptual structure and by unfolding some of its most important conceptual connections. After reviewing the field and identifying core elements that any theory of fictional truth must accommodate Christian Folde investigates several interrelated issues central to the on-going debates.     L'histoire littéraire est jalonnée d'affirmations si convaincantes qu'elles se répètent à l'envi. Maupassant en a souvent été victime. On a pu dire que ses volumes de récits courts étaient la simple réunion - hasardeuse et opportuniste - des derniers textes parus dans la presse. Un certain nombre d'éditeurs ont alors redistribué les contes et nouvelles sur le lit de Procuste, regroupant de façon parfois arbitraire les récits courts autour de parcours thématiques et génériques. Pour une poétique du recueil se propose de montrer que, loin d'être la rencontre fortuite de textes, les volumes de contes conçus par Maupassant jouent avec les possibilités du livre et avec les voisinages de textes qu'il permet. Comment ignorer que, sur les quelque trois cents contes parus dans les journaux, Maupassant a laissé dans ses cartons un tiers de sa production et a ventilé les deux tiers restants dans quinze recueils qu'il a composés lui-même ? Pourquoi l'édition posthume ne les a-t-elle pas plus souvent pris en compte ? Selon quels critères les textes ont-ils été répartis par l'écrivain dans ses quinze ouvrages ? Que peut nous apprendre l'archéologie des recueils ? Dans quel sens les récits ont-il été réécrits pour prendre place dans le volume ? Quel est le rôle des nouvelles d'ouverture et de clôture ? Les combinaisons nées de la discontinuité soufflent le chaud et le froid sur le recueil de récits courts et en font une forme idéale pour susciter maints effets de sens et donner la vision d'un monde qui va cahin-caha : le jour et la nuit, contrairement au titre ironique d'un des volumes, ne s'équilibrent pas, et le rire exacerbe - presque - toujours la dissonance. Le recueil, tel que l'a voulu l'écrivain, apporte au « maupassantophile » un supplément d'âme et de sens à la lecture des contes. Pour une poétique explore chacun des quinze ouvrages comme une aventure singulière.

Peut-elle trouver dans la narration, dont l’attirance cependant doublée de dérision distanciée chez les écrivains d’aujourd’hui se fait nettement sentir, un support générique acceptable ou bien se cherche-t-elle, par l’entremise, et la mise en œuvre d’autres sémiotiques, une échappée belle à la croisée d’autres genres, d’autres supports ? Quelles sont les conditions de possibilité́, en somme, de son renouveau ou de sa survie ? Le présent recueil, issu d’une réflexion collective sur les grandes déterminations linguistiques et formelles des fictions narratives française du xxie siècle, tente donc de dégager les spécificités des écritures contemporaines de fiction par rapport aux écritures narratives du xxe siècle.

    Aucun doute : la catégorie du « genre/Gender » a bien fait son entrée dans l'institution universitaire française. Mieux encore, cette catégorie d'analyse « voyageuse » se reconfigure sans cesse au gré des transferts transatlantiques et des appropriations disciplinaires qu'elle connaît. Le présent volume aborde différentes formes de narration contemporaine, de la fiction ou au film à l'entretien clinique ou au récit de vie. Il est né de la volonté de croiser, autour du problème de la narration genrée, cette réalité française « décalée » avec des perspectives développées plus tôt dans la recherche germanophone sur le genre. Les études sur la narration ouvrent un large champ d'exploration et d'expérimentation des identités. Dans le sillage du Performative Turn, il devient possible de penser le genre comme l'un des éléments constitutifs de l'acte narratif. Le genre est le résultat d'un dire qui est, dans le même temps, un faire. Dire « je suis femme/homme », c'est en partie se constituer en tant que tel-le. La narration de l'identité de genre apparaît alors comme une éternelle refiguration, c'est-à-dire une manière signifiante pour soi d'arranger et d'agencer son récit de soi pour les autres. Dès lors, la narration de soi fonctionne comme un espace performatif de représentation construit par le sujet et au sein duquel il se définit in medias res, dans une constante évolution.

Tentative magnifique qui, même si elle est vouée à l'échec, donne à la littérature occidentale ses plus grands récits. Des aventures de Don Juan aux voyages de Gulliver en passant par la quête abyssale de Melville, le drame faustien, l'épopée moderne de Joyce et la Recherche de Proust - pour ne citer que quelques-uns des trésors présentés dans cet ouvrage -, ce qui traverse toute notre littérature, c'est ce désir sans cesse renouvelé des hommes d'aller sans trêve d'un objet à l'autre, dans l'oubli d'eux-mêmes. Chaque œuvre qui traverse les siècles échappe à l'époque qui l'a vue naître. Tous les grands récits du Temps aboli sont donc contemporains les uns des autres et ils appartiennent à tous les temps.     L'acte de raconter a cessé d'être un acte culturel évident. De nombreux romanciers contemporains ont tenté de s'affranchir des formes narratives traditionnelles et ont brouillé, dans certains cas les critères distinctifs qui permettent de séparer les genres littéraires. Quant à l'histoire, éprise de scientificité et de positivité technique, il n'est plus assuré qu'elle appartienne encore, dans la pensée de ceux qui la pratiquent, au monde des « lettres ». À l'inverse, la philosophie, la linguistique et d'autres sciences de l'homme ont manifesté un intérêt grandissant pour l'acte narratif, lequel semble d'ailleurs répondre à une exigence spirituelle indéracinable. Des attentes et des interrogations diverses lui sont dès lors explicitement adressées. Ce livre s'en fait l'écho. Il est le résultat d'un colloque organisé aux Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis en avril 1984 en collaboration avec les principales universités francophones de Belgique et dont les contributions contiennent à la fois un « état de la question » et le noyau de nouvelles hypothèses et de nouveaux approfondissements.

Die ersten Kapitel der Studie untersuchen die Geschichte des Begriffs: die Prägung des Konzepts in Wayne C. Booths Rhetoric of Fiction, die vielstimmige Diskussion in Narratologie, Interpretationstheorie und Interpretationspraxis, und die bekanntesten Konkurrenzkonzepte wie Umberto Ecos Modell-Autor oder Wolfgang Isers impliziten Leser. Das Schlusskapitel widmet sich der Frage, wie mit dem implied author in Zukunft umgegangen werden sollte; im Vordergund steht dabei die Analyse und Evaluation von Vorschlägen der Klärung bzw. Ersetzung des Konzepts im Rahmen intentionalistischer Interpretationstheorien

    The theoretical aim of this essay is to explore the possible change concerning the point of view which users of interactive films may take when given the possibilty to become more active recipients or even narrators themselves. The article is also discussing the chances and risks faced by journalists and documentarians who are willing to adopt modified points of view. Both perspectives serve as a basis for developing a concept for interactive documentaries and their implementation in practice. The first step was to design a digital storyboard. It supports the identification of the documentary content structure on multiple levels with regard to the main plot line. Persons, places and narrated time are the main links between the documentary and subsequent information. The project was realized with an open-source-based framework and the implementation of a documentary. The digital storyboard as well as the application provide the opportunity to creatively explore the concept of interactive television.

    This essay deals with fanfiction as a blend of highly individual narrative necessities on the one hand and aesthetic as well as communicative norms negotiated within an online community on the other hand. Two points are being made: First, the term fanfiction comprises heterogeneous texts that use virtually all narrative devices deployed by the so-called canon. At the same time the authors develop new genres, modes of narration and textual models which are only comprehensible through acknowledging the peculiar dynamics of online Storytelling. Second, the special forms of meta-communication within the fanfiction community have major influences not only on what kinds of stories are told and on the way they are told but also on the very existence of fanfiction. These claims are illustrated by fanfiction based on the Harry Potter novels by J.K. Rowling.

    Our contribution seeks to render intelligible minor forms of a world-consciousness generated through social and cultural practices. Departing from Zineb Sedira’s installation “Dreams Have No Titles” for the French Pavilion of the 2022 Venice Biennale and concluding with our project’s research exhibition “The Pregnant Oyster: Doubts on Universalism” at Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt, we discuss how narrative forms (beyond the book) produce experiences of a shared world. Shifting from an understanding of universality as effect of the universal in particular worlds, we return to the epistemological proposal of the microstoria (Ginzburg, Levi, Revel) to inverse this relation. In doing so, we suggest the concept of a minor univer- sality, by which we describe the genesis of a universal consciousness from concrete contexts. Our notion mobilises Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the minor through their engagement with Franz Kafka. We draw on it to address the Algerian anti-colonial struggle and the practice of sonic radio resistance described in Frantz Fanon’s “This is the Voice of Free Algeria”. Not captured through the binary of power/resis- tance, minority/majority, ours/yours, the minor produces instead a potentiality for change, for the not-yet, which foreshadows and intuits a new humanity. ; European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant

    Adrienne Thomas und ihr literarisches Schaffen stehen in Zusammenhang mit ihrer Biographie und sozialhistorischen Bedingungen. Als Lothringerin und Jüdin erlebt Adrienne Thomas beide Weltkriege, verschiedene politische Systeme, das Exil und die Zeit der Restauration. Hier möchte diese Arbeit anknüpfen. Ausgangspunkt ist, dass sich in dem Werk der Autorin neben der aktuellen inhaltlichen Thematik auch Spuren einer innovativ veränderten Narrativik nachweisen lassen. Im Allgemeinen finden sich in dem Werk der Autorin eine traditionelle Figurengestaltung und eine klassische Handlungsstruktur, die in der früheren Rezeption den geringeren literarischen Anspruch und eine grundsätzliche Zuordnung zur Unterhaltungs- und Trivialliteratur begründen. Doch auch Literatur geringeren Anspruchs kann sich romanästhetischen Umbrüchen nicht entziehen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, paradigmatisch in Adrienne Thomas’ Werk jene thematischen und formalen Nischen auszuloten, in denen sich innovative Leistungen ästhetischer Qualität bemerkbar machen. Die poetologische Analyse orientiert sich streng am Text, es werden jedoch Bezüge zu biographischen, sozialhistorischen, kulturellen und literarischen Bedingungen hergestellt. Es werden Wendepunkte markiert für die Zeiten vor, während und nach dem Exil. Indiz für den innovativen Umgang mit progressiven Inhalten ist das Frauenbild, wobei weibliche Wirklichkeitserfahrung und weibliche Handlungsräume untersucht werden. Die Gestaltung der Protagonisten, des Erzählers, der Handlungsstruktur, der Zeit- und Raumstrukturen und des Sprachgestus werden als formale Analysekategorien überprüft. Von Bedeutung werden zeitgenössische Philosophen und Literaturtheoretiker sein, deren ideelle und romanästhetische Prinzipien als richtungweisend angesehen werden, die aber nur bedingt angewandt werden können. Zu ihnen gehören Georg Lukács und Michail Bachtin, während für die Zeit im Nachkriegsösterreich Richard Bamberger von Interesse sein wird.
