    After general considerations of what constitutes a "monster," this essay examines the examples of "monsters" in the Bible, showing that the Bible does not as frequently depict such beings as do other mythologies. The implications of this for understanding the biblical outlook on creation in general are considered, leading to the conclusion that in fact, in the Bible, it is God who is a monster, or at least, on the side of monsters, and is not to be relied on to eradicate them.

    This article is about the Mesopotamian god Nergal and the myth Nergal and Ereškigal. It is an exploration of mythology, because, in the author's view, this myth originates from recurrent themes in origin myths, like the creation and organization of the cosmos and divine society, and power and succession among gods. Cosmogonic myths and the typology of deities related to them exist all around the world, which makes comparison a viable methodology. Equally, considering the specific nature of this kind of myths, several issues of a theoretical nature, encompassing mythology, religion and literature, need to be addressed. The goal of this article is to offer an original reading of the Nergal and Ereškigal poem, by dealing with major issues in the historical study of religions and drawing on comparisons with other myths from Mesopotamia, Ugarit and Greece.

    As attention to popular culture academically grows, we can begin to see the connection between myth and popular culture. If myths are those narratives an individual or communities uses to understand themselves and the world around them, popular culture narratives have the increasing ability to fill this role. Video games, the largest entertainment industry in the world, make up contemporary mythology. However, saying video games are myth is significantly easier than actually attempting to study video games as myth. This paper seeks to demonstrate not only the connection between myth and video games, but also a theoretical approach to the study of the mythic video game. By using "implicit myth", a term which allows us to see the larger influence and experience of myth, we can detail a theoretical approach possible for the video game as myth.

    Der Sturz des Phaethon, Sohn des Sonnengotts Helios, geht als Mythos menschlichen Scheiterns an der Schnittstelle von individueller und kosmischer Katastrophe in Kunst und Literatur der Neuzeit ein. Ausgehend von den antiken Prätexten untersucht die vorliegende Studie diese Transformationen in der deutschen Literatur erstmals umfassend aus intertextueller Perspektive. Ziel ist dabei nicht eine erschöpfende Sammlung von Rezeptionsbeispielen, sondern die beispielhafte Analyse von Funktionen, Kontexten und Konjunkturen der je ambivalent gedeuteten mythischen Figuration und der je zugrundeliegenden (inter)textuellen und medialen Strategien von der Antike bis in die Gegenwartsliteratur. Neben den prominenten literarischen Phaethon-Versionen bei Goethe, Waiblinger, Achim von Arnim, C.F. Meyer oder Stefan George bezieht die Studie zahlreiche bislang nicht erschlossene Texte sowie auch bildkünstlerische und musikalische Adaptionen des Mythos und die europäischen Kontexte seiner Rezeption ein

    The superhero narrative is typically premised on the conflict between the hero and the villain, the mythical struggle between good and evil. It therefore promotes a Manichaeanworldview where good and evil are clearly distinguishable quantities. This bipolar model is questioned in the Batman movies of Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan.Since his creation in 1939, Batman has blurred the line between black and white unlike any other classic comic book superhero. As a “floating signifier”, he symbolizes thepermeability of boundaries, for his liminal character inhabits a world between light and darkness, order and anarchy, hero and villain. Drawing on the complex ambiguity of the character, Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan deconstruct the traditional dichotomy of good and evil in the superhero narrative by reversing its polarity and emphasizing the fictionality of it all. Although they differ in style and method, both filmmakers invite us to overcome the Manichaean belief in favor of a more ambivalent and sophisticated viewpoint.
