Die internationalen Beitragenden beleuchten das Phänomen aus sozial- und religionswissenschaftlicher, philoso-phischer und theologischer, juristischer, politikwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Seit 2015 nimmt die Zahl geflohener Menschen aus mehrheitlich muslimischen Ländern, die sich im Lauf ihrer Migrationsgeschichte dem Christentum zuwenden, stark zu. Die Situation christlicher Kirchen und Gruppierungen in den Herkunftsländern befindet sich im Umbruch, und die europäischen Kirchen treffen auf neuartige Glaubensbiographien und Konversionsnarrative. Die aufnehmenden Zivilgesellschaften stehen vor einer großen Integrationsaufgabe, und die bleiberechtlichen Konsequenzen von Flüchtlingskonversionen stellen den Staat vor Herausforderungen. Die wissenschaftliche Befassung mit den vielschichtigen Aspekten des Themas ist eine dringende Aufgabe, die die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses Bandes interdisziplinär in Angriff nehmen

    Abstract ; Provoked by the outbreak of femicides in Ciudad Juárez in the 1990s, a wave of socially critical narrative has circulated in Mexico since the turn of the twenty-first century. Taking into account this broader corpus of literature, the article contextualizes Antonio Ortuño’s 2014 novel La fila india within a unique sector of this critical narrative, which highlights the interaction of gender violence and migration. The violent novel exposes an expansive social hierarchy that has developed in response to migration in Mexico, and which discriminates against all women, but targets migrant women in particular. Ortuño steps away from traditional characterizations of the Third World female migrant as a helpless victim, and instead orients his narrative around this figure’s means of achieving agency in the face of intense discrimination and violence. The article demonstrates how Ortuño interweaves systemic, symbolic, and subjective violence and subverts the chingón-chingada relationship in order to offer a pessimistic, but revolutionary view of both Mexican and Central American women’s future in Mexico. By tracing narrative strategies that normalize violence and uncovering Ortuño’s connection of gender and ethnic discrimination, the author invites us to reconsider both the genre of social criticism in Mexico and the politics of female identity in the face of violence.

In this book, Jan Blommaert investigates his own neighbourhood in Antwerp, Belgium, from a complexity perspective.     Certain forms of mobility and multilingualism tend to be portrayed as problematic in the public sphere, while others are considered to be unremarkable. Divided into three thematic sections, this book explores the contestation of spaces and the notion of borders, examines the ways in which heritage and authenticity are linked or challenged, and interrogates the intersections between mobility and hierarchies and the ways that language can be linked to notions of belonging and aspirations for mobility. Based on fieldwork in Africa, Asia, Australasia and Europe, it explores how language functions as both site of struggle and as a means of overcoming struggle.     International audience ; In the Amazon, migratory catfishes of the genus Brachyplatystoma are apex predators that are important for fisheries and conservation. The life cycle of Brachyplatystoma platynemum Boulenger, 1898 is poorly known, although it has been hypothesized to be very similar to that of Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii Castelnau, 1855, which uses the entire length of the Amazon basin to complete its life cycle (from the Andes to the estuary). This study provides the first data on the migratory patterns of B. platynemum at the individual level using otolith microchemistry. In total, 94 individuals were sampled close to major breeding areas in the Amazon basin (78 fish from the middle and upper Madeira River and 14 fish from the upper Amazon), and their lifetime movements were assessed by measuring variations in 87 Sr/ 86 Sr along transverse sections of their otoliths (ear stones), using laser ablation multi-collector mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). The migrations of B. platynemum are not as extensive as those of B. rousseauxii, and do not involve natal homing. Furthermore, the estuary is not a nursery area, at least for fish hatched in the Madeira. Nevertheless, B. platynemum migrates several thousand kilometres within the Amazon basin, with transboundary displacements between at least Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. Current and planned hydroelectric development in the Amazon basin will severely disrupt both migration and access to breeding grounds, ultimately affecting the recruitment and population dynamics of these apex predators. The conservation of B. platynemum is crucial for the stability of the Amazonian aquatic food webs. This requires building effective fish passage on the two existing Madeira dams and considering alternative options to the large-scale hydropower development in the Amazon basin

    Background: A number of studies have separately shown that the neuregulin1 (NRG1)/ErbB4 system and NMDAtype glutamate receptors (NMDARs) are involved in several aspects of neuronal migration. In addition, intracellular calcium fluctuations play central roles in neuronal motility. Stable expression of the tyrosine kinase receptor ErbB4 promotes migratory activity in the neural progenitor cell line ST14A upon NRG1 stimulation. In this work we analyzed the potential interactions between the NRG1/ErbB4 system and NMDARs in the ST14A migratory process as well as its calcium dependence. Results: RT-PCR studies have shown that both native ST14A cells (non-expressing ErbB4), as well as ErbB4- transfected cells express low levels of a restricted number of NMDAR subunits: NR1, NR2C, NR2D and NR3B. The resulting NMDAR would form Ca2+ channels characterized by low Mg2+-sensitivity and low Ca2+-permeability, generating small, long-lasting currents. Ca2+-imaging experiments showed slow [Ca2+]i increases in 45% of the cells following 8 μM NMDA stimulation. Basal migration of ErbB4-transfected ST14A cells was unaffected by 18 hrs NMDA incubation. However, over the same incubation time, NMDA was able to significantly enhance NRG1- induced migration. Pre-incubation with the intracellular calcium chelator BAPTA-AM reduced both NRG1- and NRG1/NMDA-stimulated migration, suggesting the involvement of Ca2+ in these processes. NRG1 stimulation of ErbB4-transfected ST14A cells induced a sustained, long-lasting increase in [Ca2+]i, in 99% of the cells. These intracellular Ca2+ signals could be ascribed to both release from intracellular stores and influx from the extracellular medium trough a mechanism of store-operated calcium entry (SOCE). Short-time co-incubation of NMDA and NRG1 did not substantially modify the NRG1-induced intracellular calcium signals. Conclusions: In summary, NRG1 stimulation of the ErbB4 receptor exerts a sustained [Ca2+]i increase in ST14A neural progenitors; NRG1-induced migration is Ca2+-dependent and can be ...

    Can taking the perspective of an out-group reduce prejudice and promote prosociality? Building on insights from social psychology, we study the case of Colombian natives and Venezuelan immigrants. We conducted an online experiment in which we randomly assigned natives to either play an online game that immersed them in the life of a Venezuelan migrant or to watch a documentary about Venezuelans crossing the border on foot. Relative to a control group, both treatments increased altruism towards Venezuelans and improved some attitudes, but only the game significantly increased self-reported trust.

    How does housing policy influence the distribution of population? We examine the impact of the world's first large-scale rural public housing scheme on the long-term dynamics of rural population, specifically the case of Ireland's Labourers Acts. We link detailed data on the location of over 45,000 heavily subsidized cottages for agricultural laborers built 1883-1915 in over 200 districts to decennial Censuses between 1841 and 2002. We examine how the density of this social housing, which effectively halved rents for landless laborers, affected subsequent population change and find significant persistence in the effect of this treatment on the population. These findings are from specifications that include other factors plausibly related to future population growth, including initial housing stock, land values and population density, as well as distance to urban centres. A causal interpretation is supported by an assessment of pre-trends, by no effect of cottages authorized but not built and by an IV approach that exploits a 1906 limit on legal costs. Our findings suggest that deep housing policy interventions can have longlasting effects on population distribution.

    In den Wahlprogrammen der Parteien für die Bundestagswahl 2021 finden sich sehr unterschiedliche Migrationsbilder. Einige Programme sind stärker auf Verhinderung, andere eher auf die sich bietenden Chancen fokussiert. Die Autoren stellen fest, dass alle Parteien das Thema Flucht und Asyl in ihren Programmen überbetonen, obwohl dies nur etwa ein Drittel der Migration der letzten Jahre ausmacht. Trotz unterschiedlicher Positionen gibt es in einigen Kernthemen wie Integration und einer europäischen Lösung mit Flucht/Asyl Einigkeit zwischen einzelnen Parteien, die sich in anderen Politikbereichen deutlich unterscheiden. In vielen Bereichen sind die Wahlprogramme unspezifisch und bieten kaum konkrete Vorschläge, was Koalitionsverhandlungen erleichtern wird. Angesichts der rapiden Alterung der Gesellschaft und des sich weiter verschärfenden Fachkräftemangels sehen die Autoren eine chancenorientierte Einwanderungspolitik als dringend notwendig an.
