We examine the impact of providing access to mobile savings accounts and improving financial management skills on the performance of female-led microenterprises in Mozambique. We find evidence that both interventions can improve business performance but the effects are highly heterogeneous. Combining both types of support is associated with a large increase in both short and long-term firm profits and in financial security for the microentrepreneur. This allowed female-headed microenterprises, particularly those with a higher baseline level of profits, to close the gender profit gap in performance and skills relative to their male counterparts. The main drivers of improved business performance are improved financial management practices (bookkeeping), an increase in accessible savings, and reduced transfers to friends and relatives. For female entrepreneurs with intermediate levels of profits at baseline, even just providing access to mobile money accounts can increase long-term profits and for the most disadvantaged microentrepreneurs it can at least in-crease levels of financial security. Uncovering this heterogeneity in impact within different types of female-led microenterprises can help improve the targeting of these interventions in the future.

We look into the relationship between business practices and enterprise productivity using panel data with matched employer and employee information from Myanmar. The data show that micro, small, and medium-size enterprises in Myanmar typically do only a few modern business practices. Even so, through estimates of value-added functions and labour demand relations we find a positive and economically important association between business practices and productivity. The results are confirmed when we utilize employer-employee information to estimate Mincer-type wage regressions. In combination, the value-added functions and the Mincer regressions show that at least half of the productivity gain from improved business practices stems from selection effects of employment of more productive workers. This sorting channel is important to keep in mind when supporting enterprises in Myanmar's manufacturing sector through entrepreneurial training activities. While our results indicate that implementation of more structured business practices could be a key ingredient of a private sector development strategy in Myanmar, the full effect of such a strategy may take time to materialize. Moreover, entrepreneurial training should be accompanied by labour market initiatives aimed at improving productive matches of employers and employees.

This study presents evidence that structured management practices and their relationship to productivity can vary with a firm's external institutional linkages. Combining ideas from new institutionalism with the empirical management literature, we formulate propositions of how external linkages could affect the development and utility of structured management practices. We test these propositions in a representative sample of 390 manufacturing firms in China, where state linkages, proxied by controlling ownership, stabilize operating conditions for a subset of government-owned firms in the country's authoritarian capitalist system. Specifically, we find that measures of structured management practices increase with the strength of linkages to the state, with state-owned firms scoring higher than domestic private firms. We further show that, on average, a firm's overall management practice score is positively and significantly related to total factor productivity (TFP) in state-owned firms, but the correlation is no different from zero in both domestic and foreign private firms. We hypothesize that in China state linkages may lengthen decision horizons and enable firms to benefit from introducing management practices for both instrumental and symbolic reasons

How do foreign direct investment (FDI) dynamics relate to the risk premium of a firm? To answer this question, we compare the stock returns of US firms with different FDI and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) exposure to study the evolution of stock returns as firms expand into foreign markets. We document three empirical regularities. First, there are cross-sectional risk premia associated with both multinational activity and mergers and acquisitions. Second, firm-level stock returns decline when a firm undertakes M&A activity and with merger deepening. Third, future multinational acquirers already have higher stock returns compared with domestic non-acquirers prior to entering foreign markets, indicating that cross-sectional returns differentials are driven by selection based on common unobserved firm characteristics. We find that CEOs play a role in explaining the relationship between firms' risk premia and foreign expansion. To rationalize these facts, we develop a dynamic model in which management attitudes shape the relationship between firm characteristics, selection into FDI, and risk premia.

Does the matching between workers and jobs help explain productivity differentials across firms? To address this question we develop a job-worker allocation quality measure (JAQ) by combining employer-employee administrative data with machine learning techniques. The proposed measure is positively and significantly associated with labor earnings over workers' careers. At firm level, it features a robust positive correlation with firm productivity, and with managerial turnover leading to an improvement in the quality and experience of management. JAQ can be constructed for any employer-employee data including workers' occupations, and used to explore the effect of corporate restructuring on workers' allocation and careers.

Based on the theory of personality BIS / BAS (Carver and White, 1994) and the motivational theory of Self-determination theory (Gagné and Deci, 2005), studied the relationship between both models in order to identify profiles that allow us to understand the characteristics and motivational needs of individuals. A sample of 232 individuals was taken from whom the complete BIS/BAS questionnaire, the complete questionnaire of the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale (Gagné et al., 2015) was carried out and a series of incentives were investigated with the objective of having the most effective for each profile. The five proposed profiles allow us to understand how the motivation subtypes behave within the BIS/BAS personality model and how the most effective set of incentives for each profile is composed.

Although an increasing number of companies are already using or planning to implement AI for various marketing applications (e.g., managerial decision making), our understanding of how marketing managers can thrive in the age of AI and cope with the psychological and ethical barriers of managerial decisions induced by AI is still limited. In particular the human factor remains unclear, that is, a marketing manager’s perspective amid the interplay of (1) technology (AI), (2) marketing management and managerial decisions, (3) psychology and individual perceptions of AI, and (4) ethics. This dissertation addresses, and seeks to close, this gap through four distinct investigations. Together, these studies aim to better understand managerial decisions, to stimulate further research on this topic, and to apply an interdisciplinary and mixed-methods approach, which is necessary given the complex and constantly evolving nature of the topic. Moving along the field of marketing (management), the four articles of this dissertation focus on managerial decisions and emphasize the importance of human reactions to AI. The first article uses an exploratory approach to identify opportunities and challenges related to AI in marketing. Building on these findings, and taking a managerial perspective, the second article implements a mixed-methods approach to examine the drivers, barriers, and future developments of AI in marketing management. This article formulates research propositions to stimulate interdisciplinary research (at the intersection of the four fields mentioned above). As a result, the third and fourth articles answer the call for additional research and shed a more nuanced light on two research propositions (i.e., perception of responsibility and explainability) by suggesting important boundary conditions, which need to be taken into consideration to improve AI acceptance. This research represents a significant advance in the theoretical and practical understanding of the drivers, barriers, and future development of AI in marketing management as well as of the individual managers’ perceptions when interacting with AI. Marketing organizations should manage the potential tensions between humans and AI not only internally (i.e., to improve processes, collaboration, and decisions), but also externally (i.e., in interactions with their customers), in order to create competitive advantages. Together, the four articles are intended to close the existing research gap and to initiate further research on the intersection of technology, marketing, organizational behavior, psychology, and ethics.

Working capital is designed to provide enterprises with financial security. Its level depends on the strategy of managing individual elements of working capital. An appropriate management strategy allows companies to obtain added working capital. Working capital management is a difficult process as it concerns both current assets and current liabilities. Therefore, company managers are constantly looking for solutions, methods and tools that will help them to manage their working capital. A quality management system is the one that facilitates control over the management of individual elements that create net working capital. The introduction of appropriate procedures derived from quality management systems in specific areas is a great support for creating a positive net working capital. The aim of this paper is to show how the introduction of quality management systems can positively affect the level of working capital. The article presents how quality management systems allow for optimizing the level of individual components, creating a positive net working capital. The research was carried out on a group of 102 Polish small trading companies operating in the same industry. The enterprises were divided into two groups of companies applying the quality management system and of those that did not use such systems. Based on the financial statements for the years 2017-2019 and by means of appropriately selected financial ratios, an analysis of the impact of quality management systems on net working capital was carried out. The results in some areas of management of individual components of net working capital in different groups of enterprises were compared. The research was carried out with the application of appropriate statistical methods. The analysis showed that enterprises using quality management systems managed working capital more efficiently. In the literature, the subject of the impact of quality management systems on working capital is not popular. This paper may be a source for further, extended research and considerations regarding the impact of quality management on the level of working capital in enterprises.
