    We are easily misguided as to the true nature of Facebook, and tend to treat it simply as a powerful technological instrument in the service of human intentions. We can, however, gain a better picture of it through recourse to the Jewish tradition of the golem, an image of human beings, created by them in a re-enactment of their own creation by God. It turns into a magic servant in modernity with an inherent dynamic running between its human and its subhuman characteristics. This dynamic is the main cause behind its becoming uncontrollable. In like manner, what is subhuman in Facebook serves its masters and functions under their total control, but also empowers Facebook's increasingly human operation, an algorithm-based capability which raises growing doubts about what counts as human. Facebook implies the crisis of humanity which coincides with the “death of God,” that is, the obsolescence of the idea of a divine creator.

    Abstract What might a Mithraic initiate have seen when he viewed the ubiquitous tauroctonous image? Rather than understanding the tauroctony as illustrating an episode in a presumed mythic life of Mithras or as exemplifying some conceptual principle, this article seeks to understand the tauroctony as image qua image. Insights from art historians, neurophysiologists, and neurocognitivists show that cultural expectations for seeing the tauroctony are as an image of sacrifice and, at the same time, as an astrologically configured star map, cultural perceptions that were subject to local interpretations. A conclusion briefly suggests how all Mithraic images might have been seen and how scientific methodologies might profitably be incorporated into a history of religions.

    We analyze the offering, asking, and granting of help or other benefits as a three-stage game with bilateral private information between a person in need of help and a potential help-giver. Asking entails the risk of rejection, which can be painful: since unawareness of the need can no longer be an excuse, a refusal reveals that the person in need, or the relationship, is not valued very much. We show that a failure to ask can occur even when most helpers would help if told about the need, and that even though a greater need makes help both more valuable and more likely to be granted, it can reduce the propensity to ask. When potential helpers concerned about the recipient's ask-shyness can make spontaneous offers, this can be a double-edged sword: offering reveals a more caring type and helps solve the failure-to-ask problem, but not offering reveals a not-socaring one, and this itself deters asking. This discouragement effect can also generate a trap where those in need hope for an offer while willing helpers hope for an ask, resulting in significant inefficiencies.

    Als »Laboratorium der Sinne« (Michel Serres) ist die Kunst ein Ort, an dem der Tastsinn zur Disposition steht: an dem also erprobt wird, wie das taktile Sensorium operiert und welche Formen von Erfahrung, Subjektivität und Körperlichkeit es hervorbringt. Denn Berührung beschreibt ein Verhältnis zur Welt. Sie durchkreuzt die Aufteilung der Sinne ebenso, wie die Trennung von Subjekt und Objekt. Welche Potenziale und Problemstellungen ergeben sich daraus? Die Geschichte der Kunst verzeichnet unterschiedliche Blüten wie Flauten der Erforschung des Taktilen und bringt ganz eigene Ausdrucksweisen und Rezeptionsformen hervor. Gleichzeitig werden anhand künstlerischer Werke auch spezifische Begriffe für die taktile Wahrnehmung geformt. Beide Seiten – ästhetische Praxis und theoretische Annäherung an den Tastsinn – sind der Gegenstand dieses Buches.

    This article problematises the widespread assumption that the God of early Christianity is an invisible God. This assumption is found in both popular and academic discourse and often appeals to biblical critiques of divine images to make its case. Yet while Hebrew Bible scholars have recently questioned this axiomatic belief, New Testament scholars have yet to do the same. To address this oversight, this article first looks at divine images and idol polemic in the ancient world and then turns to Luke's depiction of divine images in the book of Acts as a test case. Here I demonstrate how Acts depicts God as a visible - and even embodied - being, while at the same time critiquing visual representations of the divine. With Acts, we find that not all Christians 'imaged' God as invisible.

    C’est à une réflexion sur le rapport entre espace graphique et pensée visuelle que nous Incite cet ouvrage. En quoi les dispositifs graphiques orientent-ils la lecture et l’interprétation des documents écrits (Images et textes) ? Comment l’attention du lecteur est-elle captée, comment sa mémoire est-elle sollicitée par une maquette ? Les rectangles de la page (pavés, cadres, bordures…) marquent des séparations, des catégorisations, des mises en relation entre les unités qui la composent. La compréhension du texte s’inscrit dans une phénoménologie de la communication où le corps du lecteur joue un rôle. Cette dimension psychologique se double d’une dimension culturelle : la dynamique des Inférences opérées par le lecteur articule les signes sur leur contexte à la fois visuel et social. L’expérience toujours unique du lecteur se nourrit en permanence au répertoire de la Communauté. L’espace du texte, dans son organisation hiérarchique, devient ainsi mode de régulation des discours et enjeu de pouvoir. A partir de nombreux exemples, l’auteur propose une méthode d’analyse sémiotique et pragmatique des documents pour évaluer leur lisibilité. Par sa démarche, elle questionne les approches purement linguistiques de la lecture et de son apprentissage. L’ouvrage, abondamment Illustré, concerne étudiants et chercheurs qui s’intéressent à la dimension visuelle de la pensée. Les professionnels de la communication (maquettistes, publicitaires…) y trouveront des pistes de réflexion sur leur pratique. Plusieurs chapitres s’attachent en particulier à la rhétorique visuelle des messages publicitaires. Enfin, les enseignants y puiseront des éléments pour mieux traiter les difficultés de leurs élèves et améliorer les documents pédagogiques.

    Depuis plus d'un siècle, l'automobile est devenue un objet essentiel de notre vie quotidienne. Plus qu'aucun autre outil, elle prolonge notre volonté de puissance, et notre appréhension de l'espace. Elle est fortement reliée à notre imaginaire. C'est donc assez naturellement que, pour ces raisons, et aussi en tant que décor de notre univers industriel et technologique, elle a pris place dans la littérature, et en particulier dans ce genre figuratif qu'est le roman. Elle y occupe parfois même une place très importante, décisive pour l'esthétique générale de l'œuvre. Pourtant nous ne disposons aujourd'hui que de très peu d'études sur ce sujet. Et, quand la relation plus extrinsèque que la littérature entretient avec l'automobile - par exemple, celle du témoignage sur un phénomène social global ou sur une pratique particulière comme la course automobile - aurait été mieux analysée, c'est malgré tout d'une manière quelque peu limitée dans le temps comme dans l'espace. Quelles que puissent être les raisons de cette carence, un large champ d'investigation s'ouvre devant le chercheur. Et c'est ce large champ que ce livre s'est donné pour but d'explorer, selon des perspectives diverses et des orientations critiques contrastées, parfois concurrentes mais aussi complémentaires.

    « On ne connaît pas de société organisée qui n'ait sa zone de sacralité », répète Régis Debray. Cette sacralité imprègne notre interprétation du monde en s'accrochant à tel ou tel domaine, migrant du religieux au politique ou à l'esthétique (et vice versa parfois), magnifiant tour à tour une valeur ou une autre, se concrétisant dans des rituels ou dans leur transgression, se traduisant par des manifestations collectives ou par une ascèse intérieure. Le sacré, dans sa dimension anthropologique la plus large comme dans ses formes culturelles particulières, alimente l'imaginaire de toute société et, comme tel, constitue un ferment de l'expression artistique et littéraire. Les textes ici réunis font dialoguer des œuvres poétiques et romanesques, théâtrales, iconiques et plastiques, tirées des cultures arabe et européenne, de façon à questionner en résonance leurs interprétations du sacré et les formes qu'elles lui donnent. Où l'on voit que les écrits sacrés (la Bible et ses prolongements chrétiens et islamiques, mais aussi les mythes de la Grèce antique) continuent à inspirer mises en récits et mises en scène qui les transforment et les revivifient à l'infini. Que la quête poétique, recherche verbale et activité symbolique, reste sœur des aspirations mystiques intimes et/ou cosmiques. Que la figuration iconique et plastique, en particulier celle du corps humain, garde trace d'une transcendance liée à la conscience de sa finitude. Que l'activité théâtrale n'a rompu ni avec ses racines dionysiaques ni avec ses origines funéraires. Que cette production imaginante est toujours accompagnée de discours réflexifs qui la relativisent et la balisent, dénonçant les dérives possibles (ou tristement actualisées) et maintenant le cap d'une compréhension tolérante, plus que jamais indispensable.

    L'image, présentée de façon autonome, ou associée à d'autres éléments, constitue un vecteur de plus en plus pratiqué et privilégié dans la transmission des savoirs, des connaissances et des informations. S'il est presque impensable de concevoir une image seule, le texte qui l'accompagne lui donnant son sens ou du moins un sens par la légende ou le commentaire, il est de plus en plus difficile d'offrir un texte sans image, du moins dans le champ de la communication. Pour couvrir ce champ nouveau, aux spécialistes qui se sont depuis toujours intéressés à l'image : historiens de l'art, de l'histoire religieuse, du cinéma, de la télévision, se sont donc joints des chercheurs spécialistes de linguistique, de sociologie, d'histoire, de littérature, de politique. Tous envisagent les rapports qui peuvent et doivent s'établir entre texte et image, dans les champs pluridisciplinaires suivants : médias, cinéma, outils pédagogiques, fiction littéraire, discours politiques et identitaires, chroniques. Ces trente-cinq contributions concernent aussi bien l'image fixe (peintures, gravures, enluminures, illustrations de manuels scolaires, bandes dessinées, publicités, graffiti) que mobile (cinéma, télévision) dans les mondes hispaniques et hispano-américains, du Moyen Âge à nos jours.

Il apparaît que la figure selon Rilke procède d'un travail de la figurabilité, d'une "pensée des yeux", qui met en jeu une dialectique de la figuration et de la défiguration, du lire et du voir, de la forme et de l'informe, de la parole et du silence, de l'apparition et de la disparition. This volume demonstrates the unity of Rilke's interrogations on what is an image, confronting systematically poetry and aesthetics, thinking together the image in poetry and in painting. The figure according to Rilke stems from a work of figurability. It is a "thought of the eyes". It sets in motion a dialectic of figuration and disfiguration, of reading and seeing, of the shape and the shapeless, of speech and silence, of apparition and disappearance.

Un tel dispositif, conjugaison d'attente et de surprise, réunit quelques-uns des principaux paradoxes autour desquels tourne ce livre. Il s'agit de s'arrêter, pour une fois, sur la limite et sur ce qu'elle ouvre dans l'expérience des arts. Sur la loi incertaine du cadre perceptif, le tremblement des contours et des œuvres, le mouvement infini des contextes. Dix articles, dix épreuves : une « architecture de points de vue », comme dit Deleuze, qui converge en un lieu où la promenade pourrait bien faire vaciller la fenêtre et laisser filer le regard hors du champ attendu. La limite des arts touche à l'illimité de l'art. En témoignent ici le Voyage d'hiver comme le readymade, Bartleby avec Denis Roche, et tous les paysages esthétiques déclinés dans des pratiques aussi divergentes que la danse, la photographie ou la cure.

    Cet ouvrage part d'un constat : celui de la longue inféodation de l'image au texte, au langage, dont on a évoqué l'impérialisme, la tentation dominatrice en termes de genres. Il s'agira dans un premier temps de voir en quels termes la poésie a pris langue avec la peinture et, plus largement, avec l'image, de faire le point sur ce rapport bien particulier entre langage et image et d'observer les modalités de ce que l'on nommera « la transposition intermédiale ». La question de leur commune mesure, en termes de commensuratio, devrait permettre de peser les choses, de poser les termes d'une transaction à l'œuvre dans l'économie du visible en texte. Il s'agira ensuite de revenir à l'ut pictura poesis puisque la formule a souvent été renversée et comprise comme « la peinture comme la poésie », autorisant toutes les « lecture de l'image ». En suivant une méthode critique reposant sur des analyses de textes, on verra en quoi l'outil pictural permet de rendre compte du texte littéraire. Ce qui peut-être est nouveau ici, dans cette « idée de recherche » ainsi que Barthes la formule, c'est d'essayer de rassembler en un faisceau critique ces pratiques, en une « Poétique du pictural », en une « Poétique du texte/image ». Les notions techniques propres au medium et à son histoire : perspective, cadres, cadrages, couleur, effets d'anamorphose, Véronique, nature morte, portrait, figure, illusion, dispositifs, genres et styles..., peuvent faire système et constituer un outil opératoire pour ouvrir « l'œil du texte ». La lecture picturale comporte une part de synesthésie et l'aboutissement de ces études devrait être de redonner au corps son rôle dans ce que l'on peut appeler à la suite de Louis Marin, un « événement de lecture ». L'approche sensible a ses résonances propres et l'œil, parfois, voit double. On nommera alors « tiers pictural » ce phénomène que l'on peut appréhender en termes d'événement et d'affect, pas seulement de concept. Que fait l'image en texte, l'image au texte,...
