Spiritual Grammar identifies a genre of religious literature that until now has not been recognized as such. In this surprising and theoretically nuanced study, F. Dominic Longo reveals how grammatical structures of language addressed in two medieval texts published nearly four centuries apart, from distinct religious traditions, offer a metaphor for how the self is embedded in spiritual reality. Reading The Grammar of Hearts (Nahw al-qulūb) by the great Sufi shaykh and Islamic scholar 'Abd al-Karīm al-Qushayrī (d. 1074) and Moralized Grammar (Donatus moralizatus) by Christian theologian Jean Gerson (d. 1429), Longo reveals how both authors use the rules of language and syntax to advance their pastoral goals. Indeed, grammar provides the two masters with a fresh way of explaining spiritual reality to their pupils and to discipline the souls of their readers in the hopes that their writings would make others adept in the grammar of the heart

In Grammars of Approach, Cynthia Wall offers a close look at changes in perspective in spatial design, language, and narrative across the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries that involve, literally and psychologically, the concept of "approach." In architecture, the term "approach" changed in that period from a verb to a noun, coming to denote the drive from the lodge at the entrance of an estate "through the most interesting part of the grounds," as landscape designer Humphrey Repton put it. The shift from the long straight avenue to the winding approach, Wall shows, swung the perceptual balance away from the great house onto the personal experience of the visitor. At the same time, the grammatical and typographical landscape was shifting in tandem, away from objects and Things (and capitalized common Nouns) to the spaces in between, like punctuation and the "lesser parts of speech". The implications for narrative included new patterns of syntactical architecture and the phenomenon of free indirect discourse. Wall examines the work of landscape theorists such as Repton, John Claudius Loudon, and Thomas Whately alongside travel narratives, topographical views, printers' manuals, dictionaries, encyclopedias, grammars, and the novels of Defoe, Richardson, Burney, Radcliffe, and Austen to reveal a new landscaping across disciplines-new grammars of approach in ways of perceiving and representing the world in both word and image

Jean-Pierre Étienvre, author of now classic studies on the Spanish Golden Age, has trained several generations of Hispanists since the prestigious Chair of Golden Age Literature at the Sorbonne, where he is now Professor Emeritus. This tribute volume traces his concerns and interests during his long scientific career through the contributions of numerous colleagues, major figures in French and international Hispanism, and his former students and doctoral candidates.

; Descriptions of various languages are fundamentally incomplete and fragmentary. This is due to the complexity of language, and also to the extent and level of development of linguistic traditions that have quite a few differences among them. Therefore, the views of other languages and/or language descriptions may draw attention to the gaps or inadequacies of the individual language descriptions. This is the starting point for intercultural formal grammar. When languages and/or language descriptions are related to each other both descriptions may gain and become more comprehensive. Problems or phenomena not represented in existing grammatical descriptions may be uncovered and/or more adequate explanations for similar phenomena or solutions to problem areas can be found. This paper will present the requirements of intercultural formal grammar and show its procedures and aims on the basis of grammatical transfer between ...

The language of folklore is peculiar. It has distinctive features at each linguistic and structural level. The grammar of works of oral folklore also has its specifics. The vocabulary of the folklore language should have an expressive linguistic direction. The vocabulary, or the register part of the linguistic dictionary, must contain grammatical information about the word. It is almost impossible to provide all the grammatical information about a lexeme entered into the dictionary register. Compilers of lexicographical works always have to limit themselves to a certain minimum necessary and sufficient to fulfil their purpose. In this paper, we will offer such a grammatical minimum, which, in our opinion, will be adequate for a qualified lexicographical description of the grammar of those verbal facts that are available in the language of folklore. The language of folklore is primarily oral speech, characterized by variability, not only at the level of texts but also at the grammar level. Traditionally, nouns are inflected with the genitive case. In this case, the main variants of inflexions must be reflected in the Dictionary of Oral Folklore. For head nouns, it is necessary to give a remark indicating the gender. It is also essential to record specific data on the number category to mark plural nouns. Adjectives, ordinal numerals, and adjectival pronouns are recorded in the original form (masculine singular nominative case). Unstressed and short forms are pretty typical for folklore texts. This expressive grammatical feature of the parts mentioned above of speech also needs, in our opinion, to be reflected in the dictionary entry. Traditionally, in Ukrainian lexicographical works, pronouns, adverbs, interjections, and service parts of speech are indicated. Dictionary entries, which include verbs, usually given in the infinitive, will traditionally be accompanied by personal forms (first and second-person singular or other endings if necessary). Be sure to indicate the type of verbs, the category of transitivity ...

There are examples of grammaticalisation in various forms in Turkic languages. Reduplication attracts attention both as a grammatical sign and as one of the ways of word formation. Repetition is one of the grammatical categories functionally used in Turkic languages. This article examines examples from old and modern Turkic languages. It explains with examples that the method of reduplication is used in Turkish as a method of word formation, as in some other world languages. In addition, some language units formed by repetition are tried to explain by the theory of grammar and are dealt with from examples in which reduplication creates the inflectional features in semantic and morphological categories. The method of reduplication in languages where it is used as a grammatical sign, grammatical categories such as augmentative, limitation, frequency, transition, etc., can be mentioned by forms with different phonological values, such as full or partial reduplication. The reduplication formed by the repetition of a word in the first stage represents the intermediate stage before the completion of word formation in the second stage. It is a semantic description of the newly formed word. There are many lexical units in the orthographic dictionary of the Azerbaijani language, which are words formed by the method of reduplication. The reproduction process is less productive than morphological, syntactic, lexical and other word-formation methods. Still, as a result, there is such a method in the grammatical structure of Turkic languages.

As one of the most significant syntax elements, syntactical relations are vital in forming a phrase and a sentence in English. The formation of grammatical rules and regularities related to subordination and coordination in contemporary English did not happen suddenly. Reviewing individual works from the first English grammar to the most contemporary ones gives a reason to understand how this linguistic phenomenon has been formed in modern English grammar. Since the first English grammar was based on the Latin model, they focused more on the language's morphology. They extensively covered the explanation of parts of speech, and syntactical relations were neglected like other syntax issues. Although it is not fully compatible with the modern English language, in essence, each of the authors of prescriptive grammar managed to express different ideas concerning syntactical relations. Making some mistakes regarding determinations of the syntactical links and relevant systematizations does not reduce the historical importance of those grammars. In some way, reflecting such ideas in grammar led to introduction of more accurate and complete approaches to the subject in classical English grammar in the later period. The scientific basis of syntactical relations was developed in classical grammar, as in all grammatical elements. Finally, modern English grammar has completed the most comprehensive explanation of this topic. Syntactical ties have also been reviewed in detail, with most or all contemporary English grammar devoted to syntax.

Recently, Özge et al. have argued that Turkish and German monolingual 4-year-old children can interpret case-marking predictively disregarding word order. Heritage speakers (HSs) acquire a heritage language at home and a majority societal language which usually becomes dominant after school enrollment. Our study directly compares two elicitation modes: in-lab and (remote) webcam-based eye-tracking data collection. We test the extent to which in-lab effects can be replicated in webcam-based eye-tracking using the exact same design. Previous research indicates that Turkish HSs vary more in the comprehension and production of case-marking compared to monolinguals. Data from 49 participants - 22 Turkish monolinguals and 27 HSs - were analyzed using a binomial generalized linear mixed-effects regression model. In the Accusative condition, participants looked for the suitable Agent before it is appeared in speech. In the Nominative condition, participants looked for the suitable Patient before it is appeared in speech. HSs were able to use morphosyntactic cues on NP1 to predict the thematic role of NP2. This study supports views in which core grammatical features of languages, such as case, remain robust in HSs, in line with the Interface Hypothesis. We were able to replicate the effect of the predictive use of case in monolinguals using webcam-based eye-tracking, but the replication with heritage speakers was not successful due to variability in data collection contexts. A by-participant analysis of the results revealed individual variation in that there were some speakers who do not use case-marking predictively in the same way as most monolinguals and most HSs do. These findings suggest that the predictive use of case in heritage speakers is influenced by different factors, which may differ across individuals and affect their language abilities. We argue that HSs should be placed on a native-speaker continuum to explain variability in language outcomes.

Throughout nineteen chapters the problems of teaching grammar are discussed. Only recently the argument whether grammar is useful or not has been newly engaged. Just like an encyclopaedia the major factors in this argument are presented here. This Work includes an extensive collection of source material and bibliographic notes. The different position of the discussion are critically analysed and the demands and requirements for teaching grammar are clearified.
