    We use a lab-in-the-field experiment to explore the influence of parents and peers in shaping adolescents’ beliefs on whether they are better in male-typed fields (math) versus female-typed fields (literature). We find that thinking about parental recommendation affects students’ beliefs on their comparative advantage in math with respect to literature in a gender-stereotypical way: conditional on ability, girls are 33% more likely to think they are better in literature when they expect their mothers to recommend it, and boys are 15% more likely to think they are better in math when they expect their fathers to recommend it. Our results also show that while peers do not influence boys’ beliefs on their comparative advantage, girls are less confident in their relative ability in math compared to literature when they must interact with male students in areas outside their gender’s domain.

    Using micro-data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey, and the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition technique, this paper contributes to knowledge on gender-gaps in financial literacy (FL) via a study of teenagers, emerging adults and young adults. The analysis suggests that important predictors of FL include schooling, high school-type, labour market activity and parental employment. There are large unexplained gaps, equal to 31.6%, 19.3% and 11.9% amongst those aged 15-19, 20-24 and 25-29, respectively. Very little of the gap may be explained by gender differences in human capital variables and other characteristics, including mathematics ability, cognitive ability and personality. The main conclusion is that the gap starts young and likely derives from gender stereotype beliefs.

    We conducted a controlled experiment to study how different gender frames used in the instructions affect economic behavior. In our experiment, we systematically varied the framing of the instructions, either using the male, the female, or a gender-inclusive form. Participants played three standard economic two-player games measuring prosocial behavior. In particular, we elicited the degree of sharing, reciprocal behavior, and honest reporting. We investigated if participants behaved differently if their self-reported gender matched the grammatical gender used in the instructions. The results reveal that the framing of instructions had the strongest impact on sharing, and the effects were mainly driven by participants self-identifying as men. In contrast, we observe only mild treatment differences, if any, regarding reciprocal behavior or honest reporting. We discuss the potential mechanisms and consequences of our findings.

    A fascinating history of marginalized identities in the medieval worldWhile the term "intersectionality" was coined in 1989, the existence of marginalized identities extends back over millennia. Byzantine Intersectionality reveals the fascinating, little-examined conversations in medieval thought and visual culture around matters of sexual and reproductive consent, bullying and slut-shaming, homosocial and homoerotic relationships, trans and nonbinary gender identities, and the depiction of racialized minorities. Roland Betancourt explores these issues in the context of the Byzantine Empire, using sources from late antiquity and early Christianity up to the early modern period. Highlighting nuanced and strikingly modern approaches by medieval writers, philosophers, theologians, and doctors, Betancourt offers a new history of gender, sexuality, and race.Betancourt weaves together art, literature, and an impressive array of texts to investigate depictions of sexual consent in images of the Virgin Mary, tactics of sexual shaming in the story of Empress Theodora, narratives of transgender monks, portrayals of same-gender desire in images of the Doubting Thomas, and stereotypes of gender and ethnicity in representations of the Ethiopian Eunuch. He also gathers evidence from medical manuals detailing everything from surgical practices for late terminations of pregnancy to save a mother’s life to a host of procedures used to affirm a person’s gender.Showing how understandings of gender, sexuality, and race have long been enmeshed, Byzantine Intersectionality offers a groundbreaking look at the culture of the medieval world

    The literature that examines structural gender differences in behaviour and contributes to understand the lower rates of non-performing loans of women compared to men concerns different disciplines, such as sociology, psychology, law and economics. Although there are still critical gaps in this area of knowledge, the individuals' internalization of gender roles as self-standards emerges as a common factor in the explanations provided by the literature. This paper explores whether Covid-19 outbreak changed the standard risk of loan repayment by gender in Argentina. Using unique registration data, the results provide new empirical evidence regarding the structural character of gender disparities in loan payment performance.

    Gender stereotypes pose an important hurdle on the way to gender equality. It is difficult to quantify the problem, though, as stereotypical beliefs are often subconscious or not openly expressed. User-generated content (UGC) opens up novel opportunities to overcome such challenges, as the anonymity of users may eliminate social pressures. This paper leverages over a million anonymous comments from a major German online discussion forum to study the prevalence and development of gender stereotypes over almost a decade. To that end, we develop an innovative and widely applicable text analysis procedure that overcomes conceptual challenges that arise whenever two variables in the training data are correlated, and changes in that correlation in the prediction sample are subject of examination themselves. Here, we apply the procedure to study the correlation between gender (i.e., does a comment discuss women or men) and gender stereotypical topics (e.g., work or family) in our comments, where we interpret a strong correlation as the presence of gender stereotypes. We find that men are indeed discussed relatively more often in the context of stereotypical male topics such as work and money, and that women are discussed relatively more often in the context of stereotypical female topics such as family, home, and physical appearance. While the prevalence of gender stereotypes related to stereotypical male topics diminishes over time, gender stereotypes related to female topics mostly persist.
