    Abstract: According to Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, queer exists when the constituent elements of anyone's gender or sexuality are not made (or cannot be made) to signify monolithically. By this definition Spike is the queerest character in the 'Buffyverse': both his gender and sexuality are fluid - neither is secure and both are based around excess. His gender switches from male to female and his sexuality from 'vanilla' to more varied and non-traditional forms of eroticism. The article argues that the character of Spike opens up opportunities for the resignification of what it means to be male or female, man or monster, dominant or submissive, ‘vanilla’ or an exponent of erotic variation - opportunities we need to seize if we are to challenge the all-pervasive binaries which govern our understanding of sex, gender and sexuality, and the interrelationship between these terms

    The Pururava-caritai (‘The Adventures of Pururavas’) is an unstudied sixteenth-century Tamil adaptation of the famous Vedic legend of Pururavas, which introduces an extensive addition to the original story. One episode within this supplement narrates a trial by fire gone through by the protagonist’s wife, which draws heavily on a similar episode from the Ramayana epic, both in Valmiki’s classical Sanskrit version and in Kampan’s twelfth-century Tamil retelling. This article sheds new light on the ways in which classical literary gender roles and gender models were reimagined in premodern south India. I argue that the re-articulation of the epic fire-ordeal in the Pururava-caritai is a critical reflection on the feminine model that the Ramayana heroine, Sita, represents. I show that, through a synthesis of classical and folk motifs, the author has created an implicit intertextual dialogue that concludes with a complex matrix of values of ‘proper’ femininity and ‘true’ divinity.

    How did female German-Jewish writers negotiate issues of femininity, Jewishness, and urban experience at the beginning of the 20th century? Godela Weiss-Sussex describes the evolution of multi-dimensional portrayals of the personal and societal place of the “German Jewish woman” in these intersecting discourses. She combines this with an analysis of the aesthetic and communicative structures of the texts, making visible the strategies these writers used to attract a wide readership and the literary and intellectual traditions in which they placed themselves Wie verhandeln deutsch-jüdische Schriftstellerinnen Weiblichkeit, Judentum und Großstadterfahrung? Godela Weiss-Sussex zeigt, wie in der Überkreuzung der Diskurse mehrdimensionale Entwürfe persönlicher und gesellschaftlicher Positionierung der ‚deutschen Jüdin‘ entstehen. Im Gegensatz zur männlichen oder christlichen Außenperspektive geht es hier um Auseinandersetzungen von Frauen mit der eigenen Position. Exemplarisch werden eine völkerpsychologische Abhandlung von Else Croner sowie Romane von Auguste Hauschner, Grete Meisel-Hess und Elisabeth Landau einer neuen Lektüre unterzogen. Die diskurshistorische Untersuchung, die sich auf drei Kernfragen der Moderne - Weiblichkeit, Judentum und Großstadterfahrung - konzentriert, verbindet sich mit einem philologisch-hermeneutischen Ansatz: Produktionsästhetische Fragestellungen nach den Strukturen und Strategien der Texte geben Einsicht in die Möglichkeiten literarischer Verhandlung der ‚deutschen Jüdin‘ durch jüdische Schriftstellerinnen in der Moderne und legen die Bedeutung ihrer Werke als wichtige Zeugnisse literarischer Selbstpositionierung in einer Zeit rapiden Wandels frei

    This essay examines Tajuana Butler's Sorority Sisters (1998) regarding its portrayal of friendship, sisterhood, and sorority culture. The novel conceptualizes 'sisterhood' as a fictive kinship structure and emphasizes the empowering potential of friendship among women. It fully embraces sorority culture and presents pledging as a 'social drama' in all its facets. Overall, Sorority Sisters provides an intervention into dominant representations of sorority life and black femininity.     Mit der politischen Transformation von 1989 verändert sich in Polen auch die wissenschaftliche Landschaft. Die verstärkte Integration westlicher Theorien und ein soziopolitischer Backlash in Geschlechterfragen bewirken ein steigendes Interesse an feministischen Ansätzen. Die polnische Literaturwissenschaft nimmt dabei eine führende Rolle in der Anwendung feministischer Theorien im lokalen Kontext ein. Im vorliegenden Artikel wird nach der Einbettung dieser Forschung in die polnischen postsozialistischen Diskursfelder gefragt. Dabei geht es insbesondere um die Auslotung des engen diskursiven Raums, der sich in der polnischen Gesellschaft zwischen konservativ-patriotischen Narrativen, dem Anspruch auf Fortschritt und der Verhandlung der Vergangenheit eröffnet. Hier sind in den polonistischen Beispielen Strategien sowohl der Assimilation wie auch der Subversion erkennbar. ; With the political transformations of 1989 in Poland the academic landscape is also changing. The increased integration of Western theories and a sociopolitical backlash in gender issues are responsible for the growing interest in feminist approaches. Polish studies take a leading role in the application of feminist theories in local contexts. The paper asks about the embedding of this feminist research in Polish post-socialist discourse fields. A main focus is the discursive setting of the narrow space between conservative-patriotic narratives, progressivism and negotiations about the past. The study of polonist examples reveals both strategies of assimilation and subversion.

    Gender linguistics is an important part of gender discourse. The main reason is the fact that people understand and create the world through the language they speak. In this context, “masculinity” and “femininity” are formed and developed differently due to languages and cultures. The study of languages from the perspective of gender linguistics is important for understanding the peculiarities of cultures and intercultural relations. Within the framework of cross-cultural pragmatics, we analyzed the discourse of men and women at the theoretical level, studied the causes of gender differentiation in language. In order to study the causes of gender differentiation in language, we analyzed male and female discourse within the framework of intercultural pragmatics at the theoretical level of the cognitive paradigm and pragmatic semiology. The article deals with the pragmatic value of discourse from the point of view of the cultural code, that is, the semiotic expression of national cultural norms. Cognitive-discursive analysis is carried out on the basis of gender representations. The author uses the type of discourse, which is reflected at the level of topics, the use of communicative methods and tactics, as well as national concepts, to demonstrate the conditionality of the functioning of gender representations. The language that society uses in relation to men and women varies from society to society and from culture to culture. The fact that the dominant ideology in society is determined mainly by men makes women passive and condemns them to live in a language defined by men. The article bases on the studies from a feminist perspective on language and gender relations and show that women are more prone to inflectional sentences because of the sense of insecurity attributed to them.

    Drawing on the work of Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray, Hélène Cixous and media philosopher Jean Baudrillard, this article concentrates on John Webster’s tragedies and – after a short discussion of Shakespearean tragedies as well as of The White Devil – argues that The Duchess of Malfi is a unique English Renaissance tragedy insofar as it presents an unprecedented conception of feminine identity, which is linked to an affirmative understanding of female sexuality, to a non-traditional understanding of motherhood and to the notion of the abject. As a consequence of this, the supposed irregularities or ‘flaws’ of the play can be explained as the semiotic pulsation of drives interfering with the symbolic order, while the play in its totality demonstrates that it is the negated “peculiar organisation of abjection which actually founds the signifying economy of our culture” (A. Smith).
