The study utilises the International Labor Organization's SMEs COVID-19 pandemic business risks scale to determine whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications are associated with reduced business risks for SMEs. A new 10-item scale was developed to capture the use of AI applications in core services such as marketing and sales, pricing and cash flow. Data were collected from 317 SMEs between April and June 2020, with follow-up data gathered between October and December 2020 in London, England. AI applications to target consumers online, offer cash flow forecasting and facilitate HR activities are associated with reduced business risks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic for both small and medium enterprises. The study indicates that AI enables SMEs to boost their dynamic capabilities by leveraging technology to meet new types of demand, move at speed to pivot business operations, boost efficiency and thus, reduce their business risks.

Since its founding in 1995 Amazon has become a leader in eCommerce, cloud computing services, and interactive devices for individuals and homes. In this study, we document the critical steps in Amazon's development in each line of business. Our review yields insights on (i) how Amazon responded to changes in demand, (ii) the importance of economies of scale, economies of scope, and network effects in Amazon's efforts to build out its lines of business, and (iii) interrelationships among these three apparently distinct commercial operations. This case study thereby provides insights how Amazon's Firm Specific Advantages (FSAs) contributed to its successes within and across lines of business. Our analysis further suggests that Amazon developed Dynamic Capabilities (DCs) capabilities that contributed to Amazon's superior performance. Our analysis is, however, necessarily interim in nature. Given changing market and regulatory conditions, whether Amazon will be able to sustain its performance in which lines of business and in which countries is uncertain.

Marketing agility has emerged as an important construct in research for enabling marketing managers to thrive in dynamic markets. So far, however, marketing research has not provided sufficient guidance on how to develop marketing agility. Drawing on the dynamic capabilities view, this study fills this research gap and explores the microfoundations — the specific skills, processes, and organizational features — that enable marketing agility. Based on 26 in-depth interviews with marketers, the findings reveal 17 microfoundations, which constitute a holistic marketing agility framework. Further, the findings demonstrate that marketing agility involves two types of agile market responses: (1) fast and (2) innovative responses. First, fast responses enable marketing managers to react as fast as possible to unpredictable market changes. Second, innovative responses allow marketers to shape their market by seizing innovation opportunities arising from new trends and customer insights. The findings also show that marketing agility is best suited to marketing activities that (1) are conducted in uncertain business environments, (2) can be tested on customers to generate learning, and (3) can be iteratively enhanced based on that learning. Finally, this study contributes to marketing research as well as the dynamic capabilities literature. It provides marketing managers with critical practical insights and identifies promising avenues for marketing research.

Covid-19 pandemic has shown how important are public sector capacities and capabilities to react to crises and re-configure existing policies and implementation practices. Prior to the pandemic, policymakers were increasingly turning their attention to challenge-driven innovation policies in order to tackle climate emergencies and other 'wicked' societal challenges. Such a 'normative turn' also assumes the existence of what can be called dynamic capabilities in the public sector. This paper offers a new synthesis of how to conceptualise dynamic capabilities in the public sector. The paper synthesises existing state capacity, public sector innovation capacity and dynamic capabilities literature. Using three brief case studies (UK's Government Digital Service, Sweden's Vinnova and the city of Barcelona), the paper discusses the origins and constitutive elements (sense-making, connecting, shaping) of dynamic capabilities. The paper also discusses how could dynamic capabilities be assessed.
